Just for the record:
Windows 7 64 bits, ZB 3.5 R3, Photoshop CS4 (32 & 64 bits) = same problem. When delete startupDocument.zbr Zapplink works again. But sometimes makes the same old joke. And it’s a bit unstable.
Too many bugs and absent utilities in this great soft, I think (like good ole ZMapper).
Is this still not fixed? I still cannot save a file, and then afterward use zapplink. If start a new file, zapplink can send and receive information to pshop. Once I SAVE the zbrush file, zapplink then returns an error, or it CRASHES.
(this is a big problem for me, since I use the illustration side of ZBR as much as the modelling side)
Deleting the original startup file or not does not seem to matter.
Hi all,
thanks to marvellous help of Marcus (marcus_civis), I’ve solved the problem simply loading a personal zscript that set everything I need on startup, like the StartupDocument does, but, in this way, I avoid the StartupDocument-ZAppLink bug and it works flawlessly.
If you want to give it a try here’s the Marcus post on my thread: http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showpost.php?p=643758&postcount=3
The script simply set the document size to max screen resolution.
Today I’ve added some new lines to load the polysphere and setting my preferred material.
Waiting for ZB 4…
I am unfortunately running on a problem with zapplink on zbrush 3.5 .
I dropped the model with zapplink and painted with PS CS4… although upon re-entering zbrush the texture goes back to its previews state…
I’ll explain it better:
when re entering zbrush it asks me if i want to pick up the changes…
i click “pick up” and the projection master starts thinking… the map is visible and correct in viewport until zbrush finishes picking up…
:ex: when i get the message (at the top left of the interface) : “picking up complete, now you may re orient and re drop” the texture disappears and there is no way to find it…
So I discovered something interesting at work here. Zapplink does not like doc size that’s 1024x1024. If your doc size is 2048x2048 or 512x512 you can send the doc over to photoshop and not have zbrush crashed on you if you don’t do anything to the photoshop file. Also, if you work in multiple layers with your zdoc, when you send it over to you photoshop, it will mask out the layers for you. It won’t mask anything if you work in 1024x1024.
I hope that helps some of you that is working with 2.5d stuff.
the problem i still have is if there is a custom startup document it won’t work. at the moment i have to close zbrush, rename or delete my custom startup document, start zbrush and then set my document size to be able to use zapplink and the make character sheet function. hope theres a fix one day, bit sick of having to do this everytime i need to use these features which luckily isn’t everyday.
if you are working in 1024x1024, a work around would be double the doc size and half the size again. you should be able to zapplink over you zdoc to photoshop without any problem at all.
thanks ‘the dust’ this script works for me (for zbr 3.5r3 with both Ps cs4 & cs3) but document size is fixed to 770 x 670 everytime zbr starts anyway its fine to me…still I want control over doc size…so
plz tell if someone find out how to customize doc size in this script…
Im running into pretty much the same issue as everyone else. I havent tried the script at all (I like my large doc size).
Im running win xp 64-bit, R3 and using cs3. I removed the startupdocment file and zapp appears to work fine. Until theres a fix, I think I can deal with the uncustomized document.
I had to reinstall zapplink because i was intermittently getting my shader layers into photoshop. Now I am not getting any shader layers at all. Is there a setting I am missing?
go back into zbrush WITHOUT accepting changes or saving your photoshop doc
and then re-zapplink into photoshop and they are there?

That is what I am saying, for me, on my machine… doesn’t always happen, but when it does, that seems to fix it. There are various other issues with Zapplink, but that’s what I’m able to contribute to this particular issue.
Yup, when you double the doc size, zapplink will work correctly with the layer masking in photoshop. They are working on it to get it fixed. So I was told anyways…
Amo, I had a strange problem days ago when I bought a LCD HD 16:9 monitor to replace my old CRT 4:3: ZB opened but with little size respect to monitor resolution.
What I’ve done is:
Run ZB
Waiting for our startup script
Maximizing ZB window
Preferences -> Config -> Store Config
Preferences -> Config -> Save Ui
I don’t know which one of the last steps really you need, I used both and now I have the canvas to max screen resolution and ZAppLink still workin as in past.
I hope it can be of any help for you.
Exactly the same is happening to me. After saving the document, Zapplink stops working. However, starting all over again, fresh document, Zapplink works fine.
I’m using Win7 - 64bits
EDIT: I installed Marcus script and Zapplink works again, HOWEVER… after running it and working in PS CS4, returning back to Zbrush, the details from PS are not transferred… I tried several times and nothing.
After deleting starupdoc, Zapplink works fine. However, although in PS CS4, I get the top and bottom layers (the not editable ones), once I get back to Zbrush, the details are not transferred, I get the same image as before using Zapplink, no new details added… The weird thing is, it worked before without a problem, but last night, it just stopped working all together. After having saved the startupDocument and use it, Zapplink stopped working for me and how it should. I also get some crashes with Zbrush when using Zapplink sometimes in the past.
I think I’m just going to re-install Zbrush 3.5 R3 again and never touch the Startdoc. Just save the Tool. Nice to hear from Ninjatastic tha they are working on a fix for this problem. It is actually a big problem when the main purpose of the Zapplink is to be able to transfer details from one app to the other and having this kind of bug.
Hi. This is more a question of the functionality of the new zapplink. When importing into photoshop, I get a handy front back left right profile but how can I overlay a texture onto the the layer like the old zapplink, it is now just a standard layer so i have to make my texture half transparent to line it up.
Thanks!

watching tutorials, my experience differs in the fact that there is no mask for each layer.
