Z3.5 R3 - ZApplink not working

ZB 3.5 R3 installed like charm but I cannot get ZApplink to work with my Photoshop CS2 - I keep getting an error message: Error encountered while attempting to launch external editor - usually I can try 3 times and then Zb crashes. Any ideas would be appreciated :slight_smile:

my system:
Windows XP 32bit
3 GB of RAM, Intel Core 2 quad processor

What operating system are you running? If it’s Vista or Windows 7, have you set Photoshop to run as administrator?

Neither, it’s win XP 32 bit :slight_smile:

Do you have a TempZAppLinkExport.psd PSD file in your Zbrush 3.5 R3 / ZPlugs / Zapplink / ZapplinkData folder?

Is photoshop your default software when double clicking on a PSD file ?

also…Try launching Photoshop manually and then check ZApplink.

Totyo - no there is no such file in the folder. I looked at my 3.1 folder and it’s there. I tried making exactly the same file and placing it there but that didn’t work.

I’ve tried with PS open - in those cases Zbrush crashes instantly.

Can you check if the ZApplinkData Folder of ZBrush 3.5 R3 have the good permissions?

Do a right click on this folder, choose properties and see if your user (or usergroup can read/write/execute privileges for this folder (the ā€œUsersā€ should have all the access)

try also to create this file with Photoshop in this folder, or copy the one created with ZBrush 3.1 and try again.

How about making sure both PS and ZBrush 3.5R3 executables have ā€œRun as Administrator permissionsā€?

Don’t forget to restart program(s) if they are already open when you make the permission change.

ok I got it to work finally - reinstalled Zbrush without ZApplink in it [custom install]. I then dowloaded the ZApplink plugin alone from the Download Center and installed it. It works fine.

Im having issues with zapplink as well. Im using windows 7 though and photoshop cs3. Permissions are fine but when i zapp to photoshop, edit the doc and then zapp back to zbrush R3 crashes everytime.
I tried Intervains suggestion, custom install and then installing the zapplink downloaded from the plugins page but no results.

I’ve had the exact same problem with R3 and ZAppLink.
After some expermentation I found it was related to the StartupDocument.ZBR. As soon as I have a default startup document for ZBrush ZAppLink stops working. And when I delete the StartupDocument.ZBR file from the ZStartup folder ZAppLink works again.

Even starting a clean, empty zbrush and then go to Document:Save As Startup Doc to save the default as a startup doc, ZAppLink immediately stops working for me. Or having a working ZAppLink, move back and forth between zb and photoshop a few times, and then go to the document menu and save a startupdoc, zapplink stops working.

i’m on xp64, having problems with Zapplink too

StartupDocument.ZBR seems to be a big part of the problem, but for now i just deleted until theres a proper fix. which i hope there is soon, hate working on such a small canvas.

but also, i can only get Zapplink to work with photoshop CS4 (32-bit), with 64-bit version it opens, i can see the image, but the layers aren’t visible and as soon as i go to paint PS crashes.

that is interesting - I actually made a startup document the first time round and didn’t for the new installation so it might very well be the problem!

any ideas yet why the StartDocument.ZBR doesn’t work with Zapplink. tried lots of things, installing, permission, downloading zapplink fresh from downloadcenter but nothing seems to help. just keep getting the

Same problem here on Xpx64 at work… startup document = failure with Zapplink, not startup doc, no problem.

A work around or hot fix would be great as setting the doc size at startup each time can be burdensome.

guess its an xp64 problem then :confused:

Im now noticing that even on the projections that do work, the model comes back in flat color, and the shader cannot be changed.

No error message, but the shader does not update after projecting.
