Sketchbook Part 2

Dude, if you’re not feeling it and you’re stuck, just move on. The horns and the paint look tacked on like an afterthought. If you were doing this for work, I’d say push on. It’s a nice character study without the stuff you recently added.

It’s not a “weakness” to know when it’s time to move along. You’re making awesome progress man, keep the ball rolling.

alright I decided to go back to original unedited images, I had brightened them up in photoshop, but that might just have hurt the images.

SpiritDreamer: as always right on:) I do need to fix the antlers, theres a plan for this piece now, I’ll definitely take your advice on this.

Industripop: I understand that the way slice said that came off as a bit hard harsh, but I rather like the way the character is coming. Yes. I agree the leather straps around his waist do see a bit thrown together, because they are. The textures are base textures, I wrote that. You know I know how to texture  So no worries. I’m kinda feeling it now. Its not there yet, no, but hellboy took an entire redo to get to where it was and I’m currently doing the vampire over again to find that character. I was quoted in 3D Artist mag as saying that “I try to find the character within the sculpt” And the Forest Guardian/God I can finally see. I feel him. theres a lot to do on him. but I with a decent render in maya I can make even those odd straps hanging off of him look like real leather.

I’m glad you guys comment though. I don’t hear from you guys a lot, so its nice to see.

I find that sometimes when Im not feeling a sculpt(which is quite often) that the pose that I eventually choose can breathe some life into it. After spending time sculpting i wont be happy with it, then wasting time poly-painting and still not happy but then a simple pose and then theres something.

oh no, I haven’t sculpted anything on my character. It’s all on paper still. But, what types of problems did you have with this. Your renders look pretty good.

Beholder: so true, Poses really do help the piece along.

Mr-NYM: I have been on a role lately and this piece is pretty much killing it, but I think I’m seeing this through.

adjusted pose and anatomy

sorry for all the edits, I just did one final edit adjusting the overall form, so here:

And you was going to give it up, when it actually turned out great in the end. Sometimes when you’re stuck you just need to see where it takes you, and not where you takes it.

i like this character a lot - but don’t understand the shoes. they look like they came off the rack from the current century. they look like crocs not moccasins. tighten them up at least - you can’t get any work done outside with loose slippers on. nice anatomy though 4 sure. maybe more of a mane hairdo?

I wouldn’t exactly say this is coming out great, I’m working with it though. And yea the shoes are stand ins

How do we feel about deer legs?

:+1: sounds cool

your work is sick bro. keep GOING!

Okay deer legs didn’t work, took my an hour to figure that out…

Okay so I did adjust the body a bit and fixed stuff. I am trying out my old material on this thing, and the one used above, then again I am going to render this in maya so we will see what happens with that.

EdiT

Okay so I would show you what I did to him in image form but the spur of the moment I decided to made some more adjustments, and then I did a turn table so rather that bore you with images, here he is rotating

the brown color looks better, it ended up looking good. The only thing i dont like is teh color of his fingernails and thsoe thinngs around his hands ;f

yea I changed the arms, I wasn’t feeling this piece you know that  So I’m just glad that at this point I can with satisfaction shelve it. I mean obviously I could do more, but frankly there are other projects to be done.

here is a view from zbrush, untextured and rendered. Some might like it better this way, perhaps a retexture is in order

finally happy with something, I think I’m back on that roll.

Redid my vamp, completely new direction, new model. More ogre/chimp, but I like it. I’m happy in the direction and I have a direction. Oddly enough I like the Forest Guardians Clay render better than the BPR render…I think the textures do need to be redone. But thats for another day. I’ll still pop him into maya for a clay render just to see what happens.

but for now what I did:

Very nice Work, man!
I think what you should work on is the Head in the Side perspective, its looking odd right now (especially the Nose). Another Area I would work on is the trapecius/Neck Area (in the Side View it looks like hes leaning backward and in the front view the trapecius is too straight).
One last thing: The Clavicles from the front view look too straight, the should be more angled.

Sounds good, thanks for stopping by, though the vampire previous I did had ornate anatomy and a lot of what your saying was done intentionally (with exclusion of the clavicles, good eye). You’ll see from the final image. I’m just happy I have an idea with this guy. And that face is staying Haha sorry, its something in my eyes that complete the model.

an update
