ShadowBox: adventures with intricate alphas...

You have inspired me to start experimenting with Shadowbox, so I’m glad you mentioned it again. I felt we were drifting off into MatCap-land…which is a great place to drift off into.

Back to Shadowbox though, I think I understand how one can invent great initial shapes, and I can see that by duplicating and stretching geometry in various ways, one can get variations on the base shape. What I can’t figure out is how you get the intricate color folds of one shape/color directly into another that you have in your artworks. It looks like you are somehow getting edge loops. I’m like trying to follow a recipe without a cook book.

Any insights and tips along these lines are greatly appreciated.

i try make one shader maybie you have idea how get the result ! the idea is simple
one toon shader ! ok you say easy zbrush got already lot toon shader but i hope for

maybie you got idea if you understand what i say

Hi ArtBot, a tutorial is on its way, but there really is nothing much to it, I saw a ShadowBox tutorial on You Tube (ZBrush’s Official Channel) and then just took it a few steps furter…

You’ve lost me there mate, I think what you might be after is some sort of toon shader if i understand you correctly… other than that i’m not sure… Why not try and post an image of what you would like ?

Hey There

This is my first attempt at doing something other than a pure abstract… I used ShadowBox, Move Brush & custom Alpha Maps

Well, this isn’t strictly my first… I did do one before this, but it will never see the light of this forum or any other - it looked like the illegitimate love child of Snoopy and a diseased Elephant - in fact I was laughing at it so much I very nearly fell off my chair…

To be honest this one isnt finished, I could have worked on it more and then some - but unfortunately I’m about to find myself out of work in 2 weeks - so i’m furiously trying to sort something out…

As for the MatCaps that I was going to put up for download today, Pixologic have contacted me, I think with a view to having them as an official download, so Im going to e-mail them back now and see whats what - regardless, they will be available soon

Thanks for looking

J

Ofcourse PIXO had to contact you - some of the best MATCAPS I’v seen here

Have a great weekend!

You should mention that when these are released by “pixologic” (congrats) for download, they should be available as a pack. I would hate to have to spend hours searching through the matcap lib looking for them.

I also think that if you could possibly drop the hint that making an all in one download for the matcaps would be an excellent idea, its been done for the alpha library but matcaps are way more fun.

Keep it up

Wah Happened? :frowning:

Added suspence!

Hey There

Here’s a render of my ‘*rmless’ character done in Keyshot…

Now here’s the thing, I own and use Maxwell Render - it spits out fantastic looking images, but it is costly timewise - this would have taken about an hour to get to this level of quality

In Keyshot, on a dual quad core system with 16 GB RAM… 18 seconds

Now thats quick…

Thanks for looking

That is so cool!
I have the same hdri file (I went on a mad search when light caps came out) but you have managed to make something very cool!

Man these matcaps are so sick! Why must we wait week after week to use them if you already planned for their release? I understand Pixo contacted you, but why not release them here for those that are eagerly awaiting the pack, then have Pixo release them their way too? I don’t see it hurting anything…
I’ve got a few projects that are just begging for those matcaps!

No news?

“curiouser and curiouser”

Im starting to think Pixologic abducted him and this is some kind of conspiracy.

Im starting to think you are right.
I just gave up and started making and posting my own.
its quicker and I learned more.

the vanishing:)

Hi

Sorry to say I haven’t been abducted by extraterrestrials or been magically vanished…

Just having a hard time with my personal life at the moment - to such a degree that it beggars belief, it’s a long harrowing story that I can’t get into here…

I was logged into my personal e-mail account when notifications of recent comments came through which is why ive taken time to reply

The MatCaps are still going to be available to the community, but I have yet to give them to Pixologic… I’ll be honest, as well as the above issues, i’ve just lost my job - so was seriously thinking of a ‘Donate’ button on this or a new MatCap thread like some people had suggested, but I understand from Pixologic that it is not allowed, so it would have to be on another website, anyway, part of me thinks this is a greedy thing to do… so anyway i will contact Melissa on Monday and send the first 2 sets

Thanks

John

Take your time John, we are all just kidding around.
More importantly take care of your self, you are far more important to us than a bunch of matcaps and would rather you be happy and healthy (and fully employed).
In the mean time you seem to have the sort of abilities with this stuff that I’m sure you will have another job before you realize the old ones completely gone.

Hi John,

I hope you find a new job soon! Take care man!

David

Sorry to hear about your job Bio. Also, you’ve been plenty generous so far, so adding an optional “donate” button would not even be close to greedy when releasing these great matcaps. Hope all works out for you, and it’s good to see you back!
