Questions & Troubleshooting for ZBrush 4R8

anigroove-

with the gizmo, you must have clicked the last icon at the top right. it’s for posing/modifying multiple subtools.
it likely looks like 3 horizontal lines. click it again to go back to one one and you should be all set.
if you are working on multiple subtools- this is a feature for selecting/deselecting subtools that you want to be affected.
so the fix here is tap ctrl+shift on the canvas to invert the selection.
read the bit about the gizmo in the documentation that shipped with 4r8. it explains it better than i think i am!

@anigroove It’s a subselection, more info here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNbhvhNFWMw

@jubala Preferences->Interface->IMM Viewer->Auto Show/Hide
Or You could change the position (Placement slider)

Apparently not, It’s driving me up the wall too, but you CAN hide it, look in Preferences in Interface under IMM you will find Auto Show/Hide, toggle that until the bloody thing goes away.
Don’t bother trying to save that setting, it doesn’t save.

@Spyndel
You are looking at my UI basically in that last screenshot. I mostly use the Tool menu and the Color Menu, usually with the later docked to the left.
I only ever need to move one or two buttons around and that usually just the Best Render button into somewhere more accessible (I use 2.5D all the time).
At one point I debated making a whole new brush menu since I use almost none of the stock brushes and cant get rid of them, but I never got around to it.
What these additions, the two scroll areas, and that brush thing have done is forcibly removed a lot of the canvas in a way that I cant easily get around. The thing is I have no need for inner scroll areas, the outer ones work great, they are on the edge of my monitor and my mouse lands on them by default, the inner ones are actually redundant and I will only really use them by accident. Having things you dont need and will never use, yet cannot get rid of is frustrating.
I love the object in your screenshot, its really cool, but your UI is baffling. I use some of that stuff, but not in any thing like a sequence I can see coming up with what you have there.
What sort of workflow has you needing that stuff where it is?

@Jubala:
Nevermind that, it stopped working and now I cant get rid of it at all.

I did uncheck the multiple transpose function in Gizmo on all subtools, but no change?

Well, I wasn’t trying to advocate it for your workflow, only to demonstrate you can make a custom UI that eliminates the things that are bothering you, and free up a lot of space.

As I said, that’s my Hard Surface UI, so I’ve exposed the tools I use most often in creating hard surface objects–Zmod, a small selection of sculpting tools because I dont sculpt much with HS (good HS is more about polygon manipulation than sculpting), all the different selection/clipping/masking tools because they are important and otherwise difficult to access since they all share the same keyboard shortcut, and polygon isolation and manipulation tools like the most commonly used polygroup features, visibility stuff, mirror and weld, etc. I put buttons like “lazy mouse” and “dynamic subd” on the UI, because I like to be able to see at a glance if those modes are active.

As for the layout, it’s mostly just ergonomics. I work with the tablet in front of me, and the resting location for my right hand is bottom right corner, so concentrating most easy access items on the bottom and right means minimum hand travel across my rather large tablet. I eliminate left side items altogether so my hand doesnt have to travel all the way across the tablet to activate something, and I can leave my left hand free for keyboard access.

I also have dedicated sculpting and painting UIs, and they are all different but much more efficient than a general purpose UI, and eliminate a lot of clutter.

@Zber
Im going to have to learn to make macros!
Do you suppose one can be made that ills that overlay window that comes up on startup??
What is that for anyway?

Are you talking about the News window? You really don’t want to be permanently rid of it because it will be used to tell you about things like… patches to fix being able to save toggling the IMM Viewer off. :wink:

But you CAN set it to only appear when the News is updated. While it’s up, click its little gear icon. A new window will open with its two settings. Change to the desired setting and close that window. This automatically saves the setting. Then close the News window.

The next time you see it should be when we change the news.

PS: This was also in the documentation. I know you said you don’t like to read the documentation until you’re already familiar with what’s in the new version but it would be worthwhile when you encounter something that you’re unsure about to at least check to see if it’s there.

@anigroove You need to clear the selection, watch the video(2:20), it’s only 5min long.

@S-ed what video are you talking about? a link would be helpful :wink:
Have watched the three videos about gizmo 3d in the classroom, no answer?

Hi, I am trying to install Zbrush 4R8 but it isn’t doing anything. Rather it is just sitting in my task manager idling using CPU and RAM but not writing to the disk. I had it run for several hours and it still didn’t open. Anybody else having installation issues?

The first question is, are you using the Full Installer or the Auto Update? (Don’t use Auto Update) Second question is, what operating system are you running? (Windows or Mac, and version number.)

I am still unable to create a new mesh from Live Boolean.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Have any suggestions?
I would really appreciate it.

Summary of my previous posts:“Make Boolean Mesh” results in no new tool that I can find (see my previous posts)
The Live Boolean preview seems to work fine, but apparently no new Umesh tools are created when “Make Boolean Mesh” is pressed.

I’ve tried MakeBooleanMesh with various different sub tools and even very basic polymesh objects.
I’ve reinstalled too. Read lots of documentation. I’ve run the “show coplanar” test and looked for issues in the Render>RenderBooleans>ShowIssues (no issues noted, it was greyed out actually – probably because their is no existing Umesh).

Mac Powerbook OSX 10.9.5.

Thank you.

@Artmaker

I’m highly sympathetic, because Ive had weird issues like yours before with a new program version that just didn’t jive with what other people were experiencing (in my case it was noisemaker that would crash the program every time). I had to make a support ticket, and have someone talk me through completely eradicating every trace of zbrush on my system (not as simple as just reinstalling), and downloading a fresh standalone installer (those can be corrupted too).

I believe your problem, it doesn’t appear to be a usage problem from what I can see, and it is super weird because it does seem to be working fine for most people. I think you may have to bite the bullet and contact support for more dedicated analysis of your issue.

@Spyndel,
Ok. I will do that. Thank you for your time and for the help navigating this.
I’m thrilled with the new features I’ve tried and I’m looking forward to the Boolean functions.
Thanks again!

I am sure this is just a false positive but after I installed, awhile later I got a trojan detection from the SculpteoUploader.exe. It quarantined it immediately. Under startups and plugins. This is from newest Avira.

thanks,
Nic

@nix21

Always disable active AV during zbrush installations. If your AV flags ZB at some point afterwards, put Zbrush in your AV’s whitelist. Eventually your AV vendor will recognize it, but R8 is new.

@anigroove The link I gave You in #82@nix21 You could temporarily disable the Avira, restore file from the quarantine and then go to: https://virustotal.com/
Upload the file and then post link here.
Sculpteo plugin is only used for Uploading the model for 3d printing, if You’re not using one, You could remove the plugin.

@artmaker Sometimes it’s a good move to make a video with steps showing the issue. I know it’s not much help here, still I do that when seems I follow all the steps strictly.

@S-ed Thanks, Now I get it :slight_smile:
(Did not see your previous post)

thanks S-ed and Aurick

Love it when an Annoyance turns into total joy!
#subselection

@S-ed.

I did add a video to my first post #50 and below. Thanks for the suggestion. I hope this helps get the issue resolved, and maybe helps others.
