I can’t imagine anyone who has given it a chance and taken a day to get used to it wanting to switch it back. I’m a chronic "accidental divider closer ", and this change is a godsend.
Sure, but on the other hand, I’m the opposite, I don’t think I’ve ever hit that by accident. All I’m saying for is give the user an option to turn that feature on or off.
Meh. Options are all fine and good assuming they’re technically feasible, but to me that’s like asking for an option to go back to the old subtool visibility system, where if you made a single mistake you ended up having to re-toggle every subtool one by one. Some things avoid so much trouble on balance for such a minor concession, it’s not really worth the effort to keep an option for every single thing for every single person.
If you truly have *never * accidentally hit that stupid divider tab when reaching to scroll the tool or geometry menu, then I have to believe your UI and workflow is such where you don’t do it often, and an extra click now and then wont hurt you. I,however, do it several times a session and it’s infuriating.
Just take more than a few minutes to get used to it, is all Im saying, and save Pixologic’s attention for things like…
…ripping the new dynamic brush size mode setting thing not being shared between the active brush and the masking and smooth brushes out of the program entirely. I’d recommend putting an option in for that if I were able to imagine anyone really clamoring to have to manually switch the mode for all three brushes every time they changed it.
I hope all the people that were struggling with the new straight line functionality saw this:
Im extremely happy with this. Now we have the best of both worlds.
I’ve found this version very confusing in a lot of ways but am discovering that I cant do without things like the subtool changes.
I used to avoid making subtools (and that is a serious issue) because that one problem where they would all deselect made me insane. Why use something if it makes you constantly angry right? I dont just work with a lot of polygroups, I sometimes have hundreds of subtools too, now I’m a happy little piglet.
I have learned to select them from the bottom and a lot of other things that were a pain in the ass are now second nature.
I hate dynamic brush sizing for example, and dont even think any more about turning it off, or in the case of things like ZModeler, shrinking my brush size all the way down.
You just have to get used to some stuff cause in order to progress things have to change. Pixo has been doing this right in my opinion all these changes can be learned by trying them out.
They even bug hunt consistently.
WTF? Upgraded to 4R8p2 last night and now nothing works! When I first open ZB and click to remove the banner, nothing. I click to open a tool, nothing. I click anything at all, and still nothing.
At first I thought it was crashing, but later found that the UI wasn’t updating when stuff was clicked. So I did a little experiment.
- Launch ZB4R8p2.
- Click to turn off opening banner. Nothing happens.
- Go to See-Through slider and wiggle it. Screen updates to show that banner is closed.
- Click to load Tool. Windows dialog opens, and I find and click on the Tool to open it.
- Try to draw the Tool into the ZB work area as usual. Nothing shows up.
- Jiggle the See-Through slider, and the Tool appears in the work area.
- Try to rotate Tool. Nothing happens.
- Jiggle the See-Through slider again and the rotation appears on the Tool.
and on and on…
I found that if the See-Through slider is set to at least 1 then the scene will update correctly. But it only works for a while and then it too stops working.
And don’t even get me started on trying to move the ZB UI from my main monitor over to my Cintiq! Just impossible.
I’ve updated my Wacom (Cintiq) drivers and video drivers (NVidia GTX 980 Ti (x2)). I also did a clean install of ZB4R8p2 as per the instructions of tech help, and the problem persists.
Please tell me I’m not the only one experiencing this!
Have you done a full reinstall using the standalone installer that already includes the p2 update, or are these problems arising after updating a previous R8 version to p2?
I followed these instructions given to me by Will Miller at tech support:
What I would like you to do is to perform what is called a Clean Installation. This is not a regular uninstall and reinstall type situation. It involves removing some files after uninstalling.
Follow theses steps to perform a clean installation and get ZBrush activated:
- Uninstall ALL releases of ZBrush from your computer.
- Locate and delete the Pixologic folder that is left behind. This is will be in your Program Files (x86) directory.
- Locate and delete the \Users\Public\Documents\ZBrushData folder.
- Locate and delete the \Users\Public\Pixologic folder.
- Make sure you are now logged into the computer as a full admin user.
- Disable any anti-virus software running IMPORTANT STEP Anti-virus software causes 90% of all problems with file corruptions when installing ZBrush.
- Use the full installer to install ZBrush 4R8 P2. You can download it here:
https://pixologic.com/zbrush/downloadcenter/instructions/full-installer.php - Start up ZBrush and choose the Web Activation method to get your activation code.
- Once you have ZBrush activated it is safe to turn your anti-virus software back on.
Sincerely,
Will Miller

And just for good measure, after I did all this, I updated the Cintiq and NVidia drivers just to be sure. And nothing.
The same problem persists. And tech support has gone silent. I’m just trying to find out if I’m the only one experiencing this.
If you already have a Support ticket open and an ongoing dialogue with Pixologic staff, you should continue with that. You’re going to get more expert assistance there than you will here.
Yes, of course. I’m just trying to find out if anyone else is having this same problem. Plus, I want to document it on a public forum for those who might have this issue in the future. This is the only open forum I could find where users can directly discuss problems they’re having with the upgrade. Everything else is Troubleshooting and Q&A boards that do not support feedback.
And like I mentioned, my tech contact, Will Miller, has been silent since last night GMT (Ireland) even after pinging. I just need to get my work done and, frankly, I’m a bit desperate for some kind of lead.
Pixologic offices are Pacific Time (GMT-7). Expect most correspondence M-F during business hours for that time zone. As you’re no doubt aware they get busy around releases.
My upgrade from patch 1 to patch 2 went ALMOST flawlessly. Everything works fine except my KeyShot 6 won’t load any models. It launches, but then hangs, and nothing happens and I have to force quit. It worked great with patch 1.
I’ve put in a ticket with Pixologic.
I’m getting some strange behavior with my custom interface. Right before I upgraded to P2 I had added a bunch of brushes to my screen for easy access. I only needed them for one project, but they were in the brushes folders and it was just easier to have them within reach. After I upgraded and restarted, the new brushes did not appear, but every time I loaded one from a folder it would appear in it’s spot on the screen, though often in duplicate or triplicate. As I added more brushes the multiples would be replaced with the new brushes. They were available for the rest of my session until the next restart.
Today I’ve been experimenting with different brushes from the brushes folders, which I have never used before. I find that every time I choose one it will appear in one of the spots on the screen where the other brushes should have loaded, also in duplicate or triplicate.
So this is clearly not normal behavior, but kind of convenient?
This is normal behavior. Brushes not in the Zbrush start up list arent loaded with the program. Once you load them from outside the program session (for instance from lightbox), they will appear on any custom UI you have assigned them to.
I didn’t know you guys had changed the Shift Click to turn off the Dynamic brush thing to a double click. I really want the single click back for that. I thought I had a bug but remembered reading the announcement page for the second update but didn’t know that this was included in the new double click thing. YUK!
@RamWolff:
Huh?
Shift click still works.
Where are you seeing this stuff?
In fact, double click doesn’t do anything!
I read in the page here that the second update included some change for double clicking and FOR ME on MY END it’s a double click to get the dynamic brush thing turned off. Single click DOES NOT WORK!
The toggle for dynamic mode in brush draw size is indeed now double click. It was formerly Shift-click.
This seems like a wash to me ( an extra click vs. having to hold down a modifier key). Although the point could be made that if there’s no especially compelling benefit to changing it, it would be better left alone to avoid annoying users that are used to it the other way.
I have no opinion on it either way, although there are other aspects of Dynamic mode in r8p2 that frustrate me.
Are you on a mac?
Shift click works as normal to me on a PC
Seriously, that would be the ONLY thing in ZBrush aside from its desktop icon that works like that
I mean, it even SAYS you need to hold Shift Click:
