Questions & Troubleshooting for ZBrush 4R8

Hi,

Parts of my custom UI disappear during random actions such as appending or deleting a subtool in R8.
I found one empty thread on reddit about this and couldn’t find anything on zbrush central.

Has anyone had similar issues?

edit: it does restore/refresh when I “restore custom ui”.

Regards,
Hypro

@Hypronost

Did you build the UI in 4R8 or is it a 4R7 version imported in 4R8?

Right after upgrading I noticed some strange things with my custom UI from 4R7 - buttons/sliders that changed places and some that seemed to be changed randomly.

I rebuilt the UI from scratch in 4R8 and ahven’t had any issues with it. It was painful but necessary :slight_smile:

cheers

@RafalZ

It’s a new R8 UI, so unfortunately that’s not the issue. And I’m on 4R8 P1.

Hi Hypronost, I have been having some similar issues. As I am rebuilding custom palletts that also contain macro buttons written in 4r8, I am finding that for some unknown reason the custom Ui starts to loose buttons, as I am going through the rebuilding and creating new custom pallets in 4R8.

Heres the weird thing on top of that,

This broken UI works ok If I use another tool .

But If I open up the tool I was using when I made the UI, the UI is always missing buttons.

Also when this occurs my CTRL Z hotkey no longer works on that tool.

The good news is after I keep working on this eventually I seem to get the UI stable. With the customization I want, Keeping my fingers crossed that the set up stays ok.

On my second PC (Windows 8.1) when I use Noisemaker, the “Apply to Mesh” option isn’t visible. On the same project on my Windows 7 PC, the option is there. I’m wondering if it is a bug that only happens in Windows 8.1?

I’m having a problem with exporting Normal Maps through the Multi-Map exporter. When I make a tangent Normal Map, it shows fine in the little thumbnail in the NM palette. But when I use Multi Map Exporter to export, the resulting map is World Space. The only way I can get a Tangent map out is to clone the map and export from the texture slot on the left.

Everytime I press GOZ, zbrush4r8 launches multiple instances of 3dsmax 2018. Except the first time, everytime I try to send something to Max, nothing is passed, but a new instance of 3dsmax is created.
With 4r7 and Max2017 I could switch subtools back and forth countless times without problems.
Now I find myself succeding the only the first time and then closing empty instances of 3dsmax(looks like it doesn’t mantain the link to the already opened instance of Max2018,but instead it opens a new one everytime).

Is it me or did the clay brush changed in 4r8. I can’t get the clay brush to act the same way as it did in previous zbrush versions. If I have a flat surface it does add volume, but if the surface has some peaks and valleys it seems it won’t do anything. I’ve changed the imbed values many times to see if these does any effect, but I get the same result: the clay brush does nothing. This was one of my favorite brushes and now it seems it has a different algorithm. Please help me out so I can make the clay brush act like it used to. Thank you.

Yeah it was changed, behaves differently now. Try other brush, “Clay tubes constant”, works for me. I don’t see a difference between it and old Clay Tubes

I’m getting weirdness with clay tubes constant where it behaves differently on different surfaces. Sometimes it acts like the old clay tubes brush, sometimes it acts almost like a layer brush, sometimes it won’t do much of anything. I noticed just now while I was writing this that it acts more like a layer brush when you have a morph target on.

@dillster

Actually this could be good news…like getting 2 for the price of one!
The thing is I could use both , Tangent and World Normal maps in an external texturing application I use ( DDO Quixel).:wink:

Guys…claybrush behaves differently, “smoother”, because the “alpha and texture” subpalette…make adaptive map size = 0 .
And … it sometimes doesnt change the surface…,my workaround is to isolate that portion of the mesh

Guys…Im am totally unable to use the transpose “right click” feature to inflate the mesh in 4r8.

The “enable transpose inflate” in preference is ON, “right click navigation” is also ON. And yet it wont work…
what else to do?

Did you manage to do it?

@rodrigobraga

None of the functions that require right click with transpose currently work. Pixologic has said these will be replaced with new functionality in the future.

In the meantime you can inflate with the new Gizmo by Ctrl-dragging the center scale control.

Hmm, thanks Spyndel!

Is ZBrush 4R8 working on MacOS 10 El Capitan ?

Edit : after struggling with something odd. It works

I’ve been plagued by a particular glitch which seems peculiar to 4R8 and I wondered if anyone else has encountered it? Whilst working on a subtool, particularly if I’ve merged subtools and then split them out again, undoing an action causes the geometry within a subtool to completely disappear. If you then try to perform a further action, of any sort, ZBrush abnormally terminates unless you delete the ‘empty’ subtool in which case you can carry on working. If you load the recovered tool after an abnormal termination the offending subtool remains ‘empty’ and ZBrush will crash again if you try to do anything other than delete it. On previous versions of ZBrush I don’t remember this ever happening, it’s now doing it two to three times a day. Since I earn my living with the app it’s intensely frustrating.

@Affable Ed

Zbrush has always had issues with undos on freshly split subtools, so I don’t think that’s anything new. If anything I was observing that Ive had comparatively little problem with them in the new version, as opposed to previous versions where I had to train myself to handle them very carefully and execute a few throwaway actions on them (like some quick masking ops) to make sure I had a buffer there and didnt accidentally “undo” myself into a technical issue.

@Affable Ed

basically what Spyndel said.

Apart from that… if the problem is easily repeatable you could try getting a support ticket and talking to Pixo staff about it.
If they can reproduce it (you could send them your file) they could possibly investigate the cause.

cheers

Release notes for 4r8p2 - “Tray Dividers now require a double-click to open or close. This should prevent accidental clicks closing the trays.”

I’m not seeing an option in preferences to set this back to a single click. Seems really odd to change the default behavior of something that’s been in zbrush for over 10 years and not give users an option to revert back to the old single click method… :cry:
