Questions & Troubleshooting for ZBrush 4R8

Following instructions in first post in this thread facilitated upgrade to 4r8 on desktop with no problem after stumbling through auto-upgrade fail, thanks for good instructions there. But upon opening after install on laptop, I get “ZBrush Executable Stopped Working” error. Program closes, can’t activate. I had previously uninstalled 4R7 on the laptop so should be clean install.
Laptop Specs:
Dell Precision M6600
Intel core i7-2720QM 2.2GHz
8.0 Gb RAM
64 bit
NVIDIA Quadro 3000M
OS-Win 7 Pro (same as desktop)

Any help much appreciated, and thanks in advance for your time!

Sorry if this has been brought up already but I’ve found that when I activate Live Boolean, my image plane starts acting funky.
The image starts to break up and won’t stay solid, unless I deactivate Live Boolean, after which the image plane behaves normally again. Kind of a bummer, since Live Boolean in conjunction with image plane is a key workflow. :frowning:

Offset of 1cm up of my pointer (arrow)
What I mean is : if I click on a button, I have to click 1 cm up over it
When I work with Command F Full Screen there is no more offset.
If I leave ZBrush open but hidden for 30 minutes, everything is gone. Tne project I was working on is gone. And the Edit button is no more active.

Image plane not working right when Live Boolean activated

An easy workaround is to use zbrush spotlight instead of image plane (turn OFF Spotlight Projection in Brush>Samples if you use spotlight for reference images). Or use a see-through slider with image opened in background. Or some reference viewer like Kuadro or PureRef.

I’ve had the same problem. i thought it might be that it could only have one setting for an executable with that name, but then i’m guessing it would have worked with 4R8 right after install?

Heya, I think that’s the problem ZBrush has had since at least 2012 (found an oldpolycount discussion). Sometimes buttons and whole custom menus just no longer initialise when you edit a mesh, staying in disabled/empty state. As you said you need to export your ui whenever you make a change and reload it if it vanishes.

For this reason I have a hotkey assigned to config -> restore custom UI. Have no idea what causes my custom menus to dissapear from time to time.

Can only suggest uninstall/reinstall, using standard procedure. Use only full installer (not upgrade), disable Anti-Virus, run installer as administrator. If that doesn’t work, you’ll have to contact support.

I confirm two solutions so far

Regarding the missing MSVCR120.dll, and Sculpteo script message (I disable it by moving the sculpteo.zsc inside the sculpteoData folder, so it won’t load at start up. I have the same config as cadmiumeye (windows 7 pro sp1, maybe the problem is in the OS ?)

I will try to install manually this dll later

The unability to enter text in any text field can be corrected by enlarging the UI buttons size to 46 , for a 1600X1200 resolution; I think you have to test to find the good ratio between font size and screen resolution

Has anyone else found their Keyshot for Zbrush activation broken when they try to send from R8?

My experience with that activation system is dismal. Zbrush itself has given me some trouble over the years, but I don’t think I’ve ever managed to get Keyshot activated without emailing their support.

Is Mac OS X 10.12 Sierra verified as working for Live Boolean? I want to confirm that is what the FAQ is referring to as “the latest version”.
I have been unable to get Live Boolean to work on an iMac using 10.10.2 Yosemite, and would like to know prior to investing time and likely experiencing problems with other applications due to a major Mac upgrade.

Q: ZBrush 4R8 Mac Version Live Boolean “Generate Mesh” Does Not Work
A: The Live Boolean > Make Boolean Mesh process is currently unavailable for users of OSX 10.9.5 (Mavericks). While the Live Boolean Preview works as it should, clicking the “Make Boolean Mesh” button won’t actually result in a mesh being created. We are investigating ways to fix this issue, but until such a solution can be implemented the only way to fully use the Live Boolean feature in ZBrush 4R8 would be to upgrade your Mac OSX to the latest version.

I had the missing msvcr120.dll problem and I downloaded it from the site suggested in post #219 and installed it in my
ZBrush 4R8 folder, rebooted and now the problem has been fixed 100%. Thank You.

Heyo, I upgraded today (on Mac). Excited to jump into it, but is anyone else bothered by the UI? I don’t know if it’s just mine somehow, or if it’s the way it’s supposed to look. But in all honesty, it looks atrocious? The fonts are incredibly strange and horribly sized. For a visual person, it’s not even tolerable. Is the file somehow corrupted or is this just how 4r8 looks? If the latter, it’s a huge disappointment, as I’m usually NEVER one to complain about anything.

It worked fine for me straight away. I did expect problems as Keyshot can be flaky or unresponsive even when normally rendering fron ZBrush.

Now with the preview adaptive skin is shown dynamesh. How can I do without it? I often use the plugin transpose master, and all the scribbled objects in the view are drawn with one dinamesh, I can not then accurately monitor the rig, or dinamesh high-resolution overloads the system. In my opinion it is not very convenient in the case of transpose master.

I absolutely notice the change in appearance to the UI. It does look rather ugly compared to 4r7. Something is just off. I managed to figure out how to make the fonts a bit smaller, making it look a bit better, but it’s still off.

Font’s are an improvement for me.

But you can go to Preferences>Interface>UI and turn off WIDE buttons and you can modify the size also

Yes. It was the first thing I noticed once I opened a tool and begun to explore. My tool doesn’t even have 50 subtools. 15 at the most. it was about 6 mil polys. it seems when I rotate, move, or pan the object on the canvas it seems to give the illusion that it’s duplicating the entire tool for an instance. like there’s briefly two tools on screen, the one in original position, and a new one that’s attempting to move in the direction you’re prompting it to. It’s only briefly tho, yet still seems like it shouldn’t be happening. It never happened in zB4r7.

I’m on an iMac 5K i7 32gb ram, Sierra 10.12.5

hi . why smoothnormals in render pallet doesn’t work like 4r7 ?
before any response , yes i checked display properties for bpr smooth normals
