This is normal. Just delete lower subdivisions.
I’m seeing odd tings in 2.5D where it seems to go 2D sometimes.
This is sort of hard to explain as 2.5D is already a strange concept but as an example:
If I draw a sphere, and then use a cylinder as a brush I just get a lot of the flat end
of the cylinder passing over the sphere instead of the way it would usually conform
to the spheres surface… if that makes any sense…
I’ve also had the random duplication issue and sluggishness. I believe it happened when I continued working after having the move elastic brush problem.
Hey all,
I’m a long term Zbrush owner and love the program to death or at least I did. What am I talking about? Well, 4.0r2b is what. I was so looking forward to it, what with fibermesh and rendering updats woohoo! UNTILL I went to install it and got this message
“Sorry zbrush is unable to properly complete this function due to faulty or an incomplete installation. Contact pixolo…”
Shoulda seen the look on my face. “ah, it must be something stupid I did, or just a corrupt download right?” I wrote a ticket EHE-922321 and made two phone calls to support. I got two chilling answers one from the email “Note for PC users: If you are running Windows XP, DO NOT UPGRADE. Due to advancements in ZBrush, Windows XP is no longer supported.” and one from the tech on the phone “oh you have windows xp? It no longer works with 32 bit windows xp, sorry!” WTF? Please don’t tell me the company that always offered free upgrades that included PCs and Mac’s 32 bit or otherwise was finally dumping its 32 bit customers?
The tech went on confusing me even more by saying something about upgrading to windows 7 and I’d be OK ($200 pro 7 64 bit) or ($120 pro 7 32 bit) ok if you have the money? And he said the 32 bit version would work? Is that true? In these hard times of unemployment I don’t want to spend money in the wrong place if I had it in the first place that is. And hearing two different stories, yes it will work with 32bit 7 or No you are fubar leaves me wondering how I can still keep up with the Joneses?
So will windows 7 32bit professional run Zbrush 4.0r2b or not? Intell says my dual t2500 processors can run 64 bit with a BIOS upgrade but Dell’s bios upgrade for my M1210 is A08 whereas I already have a version A09 so where did Dell’s A09 go? (questions for them, if their support site worked that is) The windows update tool for win 7 says my PC can run the 32bit version of Win7 pro with an XP mode if virtulization is enabled in BIOS which mine is.
More questions: Is win7 64 bit capable of 32 bit instructions and would it install to a dual core t2500 based pc With BIOS A09 installed and virtualization enabled in BIOS? OR would I need to install the 32 bit version of win7 and then Zbrush would run just fine for future updates based on the 64bit architecture? OR am I being forced to sell my grandkids for a new 64 bit PC?
If your running a 32 bit system your screwed, like me.
I would say give them a bit of time, from what seems to be happening to people there are a number of issues and I suspect
that things are a bit hectic at Pixologic as they sort out what is going on into some sort of categories, such as which operating
systems have which problems and which do not.
I looks like a lot of different systems are having a wide range of issues and that they are working on figuring out what went wrong and for who.
The best thing to do is what you did, supply any error messages you get and wait for Auric, Support or Pixolator to pop up and tell you what
to do or to send you a patch.
I dont recall them discontinuing support for anything in the last two upgrades so I would just wait and see if I were you.
I might do something like reinstall due to some of the problems I have been having but I will wait and see on that my self, if I have to do that I will.
Doing drastic things like changing your operating system might not be such a great idea yet, it could just add to the chaos and make future
problems harder to narrow down.
I can tell from your thread that 4r2b has been running so that proves that it CAN run and that you do not need to do more then wait till its fixed
Take my word on this stuff, I was panicking too and it doesn’t help anything, though sometimes its more exciting then waiting!
I have only run into the duplication issue once…
I doubled the document size, then set it to AA Half, then attempted to sculpt. ZBrush was very sluggish - I expected it to be with such a big document size. However I had done this in previous versions and it was never this bad. As soon as I made a quick rotation and sculpt maneuver the duplication occurred just as mentioned numerous times in this forum. Not a big deal in this case as it isn’t really under the domain of normal workflow - still thought it was worth mentioning.
And I’ll agree with another person who posted here - the feel of the program is definitely off and the release does seem a bit ‘glitchy’.

They’re not dumping their 32 bit customers (I’m still 32bit on Windows7 and using R2b…zbrush isn’t even 64bit yet). Zbrush is a pretty cutting edge program, and your operating system (XP) is more than a decade old now. Trying to maintain support and functionality for it would simply hold the program back from being able to improve and implement the newer features they want to. I don’t think Microsoft even supports XP now; they’ve moved onto greener pastures.
64bit Windows will also still run 32bit applications, the program just wont be able to use more than 4GB of RAM if I recall correctly.
Hello,
It seems that the CurveEditable brush has been disabled for subdivision geometry. Is this a bug or an intentional change? It was a brush I liked to use for clothing and cape folds but no longer can. Is there some replacement?
Thanks
[FONT=arial]I have had a reply to my support ticket and apparently Windows XP is getting too old for the newer ZBrush, so old that support told me that they will be removing XP from the requirements list.
So I guess it’s time to upgrade my operating system …
Pixologic support :
You are actually running into an issue of ZBrush being more advanced than what XP can easily handle. The XP Operating system is just too old at this point to keep up with the newer software technologies that have come out. This being the case, we have actually made the decision to remove XP under the System Requirements going forward from this point.
If the slow down is something you can work through, then by all means you can continue using ZBrush 4R2b, but I actually recommend uninstalling it and reverting back to ZBrush 4R2 at this point.
Sincerely,
Will Miller
Pixologic Support
Anyway : I am going to wait and see if the patch next week will resolve the issues before installing a new operating system …
Seems to me that a lot of this stuff is the direct result of PIXOLOGIC wanting to protect themselves against piracy and in the process all they are doing is annoying the beheck out of many of its users.
Time to get real and make the product totally independent of any previous version and making the installation a simple install and enter your key. Basta!
Come on people - the money you spent on this stupid protection garbage and the annoyance etc are not worth it! Surely somebody at Pixologic must see this!
Since 4R2b I haven’t been able to use Transpose Master. It keeps flipping the polys and weirding out the models, even the built in demo models.
Here’s what I mean:
Mac OSX 10.6.8
ZBrush 4R2b
Edit: I fixed this problem by trashing the CustomUserInterface4R2.cfg file
Hello friends,
I have read that Windows XP is no longer supported. Does the same apply to the 64 bit version?
ZBrush is running on my system very unstable and crashes frequently when saving.
My problem I have described already here. In the wrong thread, sorry!
http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?165874-ZB-is-crashed-down-by-saving-a-file
Maybe it’s time for me to upgrade to a current Windows:)
I’ve read about it, or it is nothing in the PDF?
best regards
Jörg Vollmer
as you see, you can’t see anything.
well except for the fibers i created to get an idea of what had happened to my geometry.
since the update i experinced this a few times.
the sculpt and every subtool disappear as i’m sculpting.
even saving and restarting zbrush, setting the pivot and framing and displaying double sided doesn’t help.
any suggestions?
I’ve mentioned this in a few other threads before I saw this one, but the biggest issue for me is the horrible brush performance. It’s not just the move elastic brush, it’s all of them. In some it is more apparent though. My favorite brush, the curve tubes brush, is practically unusable even on a fairly modest 1 million poly mesh. At first I thought it was my computer which is a dual core 3 ghz with 4 gb ram and windows xp x64. I though maybe it’s just getting too old, but then I installed it on my very expensive work computer, and it still runs poorly.
I always thought one of the best things about Zbrush was the brush responsiveness, even on lower end machines. It really was the deciding factor in choosing Zbrush over Mudbox. I really hope this is a priority to fix, because I want to put hair over all of my characters, and right now I have to stay on 4r2.
Not to mention the amount of crashes it will make when saving your files out. Especially if they are not located in your root ZBrush ztools folder.small_orange_diamond
Where exactly is the new Visible Symmetry Center, i’m not seeing it in the transform palette.
is there a way to save a plane insert brush with a micromesh so the micromesh renders every time i use the plane ?

Yes it does.
I’m running XP 64 bit Pro SP2 and I am told by Pixologic support that XP will be removed from system requirements …
I will wait for the patch next week to see if that resolves the issues before I am going to change operating systems …
Hi,
I also report a major problem with Curve brushes (and insert brushes apparently) : they dont work anymore if a model has subdivision levels and/or layers.
I hope its not intended because those brushes are (were ?) very usefull, and not only in Dynamesh mode…
please let us know about that.
thx
