Questions and Troubleshooting for ZBrush 4R2b

Hey guys

Firstly let me say what an awesome update this is.

I have been playing with the Fibermesh menu and got some great results already for hair that normally takes me ages to sculpt, but I want reset Fibermesh menu to defaults.

I can’t find a button for this so I pressed the ‘Init Zbrush’ button to reset, but the settings I previously used in the Fibermesh menu were still there. I quit and restarted and the settings I previously used in the Fibermesh menu were still there too.

Any ideas on how to get back to the default settings for Fibermesh. If I am missing something really obvious I apologise.

I filled out a support ticket this morning but I was wondering if anyone has some suggestions for this. I was able to de-activate my license for 4.2R2. After installing the update I select activate via web, get the code, paste the code to activate, zbrush appears to accept the code but the activation window pops up again telling me there is no active license. The same activation window pops up when I restart zbrush and re-entering the activation code doesn’t seem to take.

There is no solution at this time. We are currently investigating this issue, which is affecting a very small percentage of users.

Since you submitted a ticket, please let me know what that ticket ID number is. That way I can assign it to the right people as soon as possible.

Edit. N/m I was thinking of the BPR filter > Blur instead

in case you tried to render with a zbrush project file from a previous version where your shadow options where already set, try adjusting all the settings a little again just to sort of ‘refresh’ them. see if its fine then. I did have a similar effect like you during beta and ‘resetting’ my shadow and light settings cured it.

I think that there is a factor of x10 on the parameters Render->BPR Shadows->GStrenght using Matcap.
In fact:
with the default value of 0.75 and a standard material I obtain good shadow.
with the default value of 0.75 and a Matcap material I obtain a totally black shadow: in this case, in order to obtain a 75% shadow, I have to set the Render->BPR Shadows->GStrenght to 0.075.

So I think to use this rule for my BPR renders:

  • If I use only Standard material all is OK

  • If I use only Matcap material i set the Render->BPR Shadows->GStrenght to 0.075 and all is OK

  • If I use Standard and Matcap material I have to set the value of GStrenght of each subtool accordingly with the subtool material

Been Playing with ZB4R2B and think it is really great so far. One thing - it looks like the Grow Mask and Shrink Mask functions are mapped to the wrong buttons. I read the docs carefully (it is mislabeled Extend instead of Grow BTW) and I can’t reconcile the behavior except to say that it looks like they are reversed. Am I the only one?

Also, the CTRL+Click and CTRL+ALT+Click commands with masks don’t seem correspond to what the docs say:

The CTRL+Click and CTRL+ALT+Click shortcuts are now assigned to the Extend
and Shrink Mask functions rather than to the Blur and Sharpen Mask functions.

CTRL+Click does seems to now be setup to Shrink Mask but CTRL+ALT+Click seems to still Sharpen Mask. Any clarification would be welcome. Thanks,

I can`t get the Z4R2b update to work and I followed the steps to the word.

It just says activation succesful, then a second later tells me the activation failed!? I`ve tried all the trouble shooting tips I can find with no success.

I submitted a ticket and I hope this can be resolved fast, as I had a perfectly working copy of Zbrush until this morning!!

EDIT: Spoke to pixologic support and they said as of now this is an unresolved issue on some machines. I was advised to re install ZB4R2 and wait until the issue has been fixed (unknown as to how long this will take)

Hi there, I noticed in the installation PDF that is in the Zip folder with the updater that the backup will be made of items no longer required, but in the off chance that something may happen, pixologic had this folder created so you can have everything still. It says if you no longer need the file after a few weeks… I think, then you are free to delete this folder. Give it a few weeks and things should be fine. I hope that answers your question. All the info is in the PDF.

no, this is a tool composed by two dynamesh imported in the default scene as subtools. i have tryed to set all shadows (BPR and material) and light parameters, but i haven’t found the solution…i’m desperate…only one subtool create the problem…also to the other…

can I just copy and paste my zbrush 4r2 folder back into the zbrush 4r2b to get all my old settings back or do I have to do this manually?:confused:

A reboot of my MacPro fixes the error…
Then…it repeats…
ZB4r2b Start-up Crash I Followed Install directions…All went well, I played with ZB4r2b for about 30 min…
Shutdown ZBrush
Tried to restart ZB4R2b…I receive this screen message…

Zscript note: unrecognized command

…wait about 2-5 seconds…application closes…

Like I mentioned…all went well, then about an hour later…

I wanted to mention thank you so much first of all for this update!!! Hair was the last frontier for my creature design tool kit!!

So, I also had the missing manual button to deactivate 4R2 on the web, but I went ahead and deactivated manually. I followed all the directions as stated and my 4R2b installed perfectly without a hitch. Just thought I should mention this.

Thank you for Fiber Mesh!!! Gotta learn it, but just playing with it, I had to rip myself off the computer or I would never get back to my work. So fun! Shadows are a bit getting used to, but I noticed that has been covered in other posts, so I’ll take a look at that when I have time.

I have found a problem trying to obtain sharp shadow under BPR.
I think that the problem could be the same adressed previously by xexex, as this was not present in the first zBrush 4 release.

It seem that the resolution of BPR Shadow map (Render->BPR Shadow->Res) is clamped to 1024.

Here some render of a test mesh with the only difference on this parameters

If I use Photoshop in order to overlap the renders with BPR shadow resolution of 1024, 2048, 4096 and 8192 I can tell that there is no difference between these renders, so this leads me to think that every value greater than 1024 involves the use of a real value of 1024.
This value is a very low value for a shadow map that not permit to obtain the same sharp edge that was possible to obtain on the first release of zBrush 4.
The same happens for AO shadow map.

My question is:

  • This happens also to other users? it is a know problem?
  • There is some parameters that I can check in order to solve this problem?
  • This behaviour depends on the machine?
  • There is a know solution in order to use shadow map size greater than 1024x1024 with BPR?

Please, if this is not the correct place where put this question please tell me where I can ask these questions.

Please provide a screen shot of your entire interface when this happens, including the Title bar. Thanks! We need this info whenever someone reports unusual behavior. It helps us diagnose the problem.

is there anybody who got performance issues when using “move elastic” on hipoly meshes besides me?
