uninstalling and reinstalling the C++ redist seemed to do the trick for me (oh and temporarily disabling my antivirus too)

Most plugins from earlier versions will not work with 3.5. Too much is changed or new. We’re working on updating everything that we’ve published. I can’t give an ETA on specific ones, though.

Will it screw things up to try them to see which ones will work? I’m mainly wanting to try Paintstop (vista 64 if it matters).
Thanks
You are welcome to try. But if you break it, you get to keep both parts. Install them ONE at a time and test thorougly to ensure that there are no problems. When installing, be sure to place the plugin in the ZBrush 3.5\ZStartup\Zplugs folder. If you encounter problems, delete the plugin from that folder before moving on to trying the next.
The ones most likely not to work are the ones that use the Tool palette. That is because a lot of changes have been made to the palette in order to accomodate all the new features.

Thanks aurick, problem completely resolved ! … you rock
You can modify the strength of the smooth brush by modifying its curve profile.
Example…
Hold SHIFT key (to activate smooth brush) and the set the focal shift value (in Brush/Curve/Edit Curve) to -100.
I used dozens of programs without setting any permissions; how would I know if that is an issue?
How do I disable DEP and can I do this without being able to start Zbrush 3.5?
Let’s start with the DEP. If you go to the Troubleshoot Help folder there’s also a text file there. That text file has instructions for how to disable DEP.

I am using ZBrush 3.5 with a Wacom talet. It works, but the pressure or size is not recognized and the Tablet preferences are greyed out, though the Use Tablet button looks active. Any clues?
It sounds like you don’t have drivers installed for your tablet. Or you have just the basic Windows drivers, which in this case are sufficient to run ZBrush without a “wintab service” error, but not enough for ZBrush to be able to use it. Go to the manufacturer website for your tablet to download and install the most current drivers.

Had the same problem (vista 64). I already had the latest driver, but installed it again (without uninstalling the current one). After reboot, it worked fine. Give that a try if you haven’t already.
Thanks Fuzatron!
I forgot to mention my system specs and I too am on Vista 64.
I will try that.
Now if I can get ZBrush to come up more than once I will be doing good!
NP =)
Make sure you are running as administrator. I couldn’t get it to come up at all until i did.
It seems even when I had the alias in the Quick Launch or Start menu it hangs. Regardless if I indicated “Run as Admin”.
What does work, is to run ZBrush directly from the folder where it is installed.
Strange!
Well, I received my work copy of 3.5, but at 8pm central I am still waiting on my personal copy here at home.
I hope Cleverbridge is working overtime tonight!
I really hope they have the right email!! I have no idea what email I was using when I bought through Element5. On the bright side, it looks like I was notified of the V3 upgrade via my current address, so hopefully I am good.
aaarrrrggghhh!!! I can’t wait!!!
I have 3.1 installed in a separate directory.
Working WinXP Pro system with 100 gigs of disk free:First try, Zbrush 3.5 tried to start (hour glass) fora full minute, then gave message that I did not have enough free disk space; then I clicked passed that and got opening zbrush window. I quit zbrush and tried again:
This time, and on the next two tries Zbruhs 3.5 failed to start entirely, gave no error message; hour glass just keeps running for a few minutes until I finally kill zbrush process with ctrl-alt-del
Have not been able to start it.
It sounds like something has caused ZBrush to have insufficient permissions. It must be able to write to its own folder and subfolders.
Also, have you tried disabling DEP for ZBrush?
–aurick
Aurick, same problem here as above, although I also get the error message, “C:\Windows\System32/ZResources\Images/OpenFileZLogo2” as well as the eventual memory error. I’m on Vista32, have disabled DEP for Z3.5, set permissions, and tried running as admin. After a number of crashes Zbrush runs, and stays running… until I reset my computer. Then, it’s back to square one.
Got my Email and Z-Brush 3.5 is running. Thank you for your response…

Heh… Had that same situation here too. Here are the steps that worked for me…
Wow this is a great release so far and I’ve only played with it a few minutes!
But my favorite brush has changed functionality…
The Move Brush no longer lets you pull along the surface normals with the Alt key pressed…has this function been moved to another brush or is there a setting that I need to change somewhere?
Thanks a bunch!
The Move brush has three modes in ZBrush 3.5.
1. Click and drag to move in screen space
2. Click then Hold SHIFT key and drag to move along the Normal direction
3. Click then Hold ALT key and drag to move along the surface
Awesome.
EDITED: Nevermind, working fine now.
I am very disappointed, from 1.55 to 3.5, I have to get additional help every time I can’t launch Zbrush because I have not Internet at home and need to bring it to the office or Starbuck.
After I sent an email request, I have to check my email a few days later and bring my laptop to starbuck again.
I thought pre-registered would solve this problem but no, then what for?!!
How could it be so troublesome even after so many years?
Activation fail and go online but the pre-registered email not recognize, so I had to email to support team, seems like that is the only way.small_orange_diamond

experiencing the same problem. First I had the “This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect…” error. I ran the patch and rebooted the machine. Have checked my DEP settings.
Now when I try to start zbrush, i sometimes get what Reactor is describing, and sometimes i just get a glitchy looking white square in the centre of my desktop and the programs continues running in memory till I kill it.
The issue seems pretty random in a few ways, and I think the system32 part of mine might be either caused by or added to by a program I’m using to run the executable (Control Runner), but there’s certainly a common error that’s behind it all.
