Quake Project: Monster Models for Quake Mod

As far as the dog goes, I was always under the impression they were Doberman Pinchers in Quake… yours looks more like you are shooting for a Rottweiler.

There isn’t anything wrong with that by any means, I think a Rottie is more fitting actually.

My only crit is, where are the teeth?

Hey, Rhydian, thanks for the comments. Yes, I was shooting for a rot, cuase that’s what I always thought they were, and the model in the Quark modeler is called “dog”, so that wasn’t much help. :smiley:

And I don’t think “where are the teeth” qualifies as a crit, more like a question. :wink: I made them in Max since it was easier to do it that way. The same with the tongue.

I’m almost done with the soldier. I would have posted updates, but he was done in parts, and I didn’t think anyone would be interested in seeing a render of pants, another render of arms, one of the shoes… So I’ll show him when he’s done and normal mapped.

I need to re model the soldier, cause of the bindpose I put him in was not right. It’s no big deal cause he didn’t have that much detail going on, so a quick one shuold be no problem. I still have that zombie to do, and I’m really looking forward to that one. :wink:

Well, the Soldier and Knight are done, but they’re no great shakes, so I’m not gonna post them here. The Soldiers design is kinda bland, and he’s in that god awful bindpose, which does not look good on forums. :wink:

The Zombie Fish is next, then the lava boss, then the old one, and finally the Zombie. So only 4 more to go, and I REALLY wanna rock that zombie. As well as the fish, since pixolator did such an awesome job with the fish he did way back when, I’ll have to do something at least that good to keep up. :smiley: So I’ll post that one when I get a chance.

I am using the identical process of zbush to max and normal mapping. I have tried everything I can think of to get zbrush to generate a decent normal map, but nothing has worked. I also have the same issue with running out of memmory due to poly counts over a million. There has to be a way to get the normal map generated out of Zbrush. I tried zmapper and got same results. I am working hard on finding a way to do it using Zbrush, I will let you know if I figure it out and hopefully vice-versa. :slight_smile:

Since I haven’t given you guys an honest to god update in a long time, I’ll give you one right now. Here’s the fish so far. I am NOT going by the pixolator version, I’m going from imagination, a really cool reference image of a big fish, and whatever the model tells me to do.

[EDIT], I forgot to comment on the post above this one. I can get great normal maps out of ZMapper. I got the max 8 preset from the questions and troubleshooting thread, and when I bring the map into Max, just flip the red channel in Max, and it works great for me. No crazy seems, no ugliness, just nice cool normal maps. Hope you find a way that works for you. :wink:

I am modeling another version without the antenna right now, just to give the mod lead a choice. And it’s not like it took long to make the first one, I started it this morning. :smiley: I’ll post some renders of the second one when gets a little further along, and some of the original when I get some teeth in him.

Here’s a render of the second fish with normal mapping. I like the first one better, but lots of people complain when I deviate too much from the original design.

i prefer the other design too…is it half robot?im asking becose of the dots looks like bolts?

Nope, it’s not half robot. Those bumps were on the ref image I had, and I thought it gave it some personality. Do you think I should toss them? I’m not too sure about them either.

I don’t know anything about normal mapping but it seems like the mapping is shifted to the right and some the details, like the eye wrinkles are in the middle of the fish instead of around the eye. Sorry if I am sounding stupid.

The bumps are not really good…maybe you should take them off and add somethnig else for decoration:D

Hey Argonaut, the map is fine, that’s just a chunk out of it’s side. Don’t ask me why, but the fish in Quake are kinda zombified, so some sort of damage is needed. But I can see where the mistake might have been made. :wink:

Ok, I was gonna wait till I had a pic update to ask this favor, but I can’t. I’m just too excited. Sriram did a new layout for my site, and I’d like to ask that anyone who reads this, check it out (the web1000.com address that is), and tell me what you think of it. God’s honest opinions here please, no ass kissing, and if you have a crit, make it constructive. “I don’t like it” just don’t cut it, all that does is let everyone know what an ******* you are. :wink:
