I’d really just be happy if they have subtool grouping, similar to the layer groups in photoshop. That way I can easily organize and collapse subtool area’s that I’m working on

The free upgrades are discretionary. Pixo as far as I know don’t promise permanent free upgrades, so we just keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best each time an upgrade is announced.
Also, would I be able to use Keyshot for external files like objs or output from apps (like blender)?
Thanks!
hey aurick, paul mentioned doing a certain workflow for specular maps, is there any chance he could drop that in the forum?
so not to hijack the thread but I am wondering how would keyshot compare to Marmoset 2 for zbrush. Any mention of a bridge to Marmoset at the summit? I was checking out the latest version and they support multi million poly meshes now and polypaint.
I did write to Marmoset and this is what I heard back:
Toolbag 2 is a GPU-based renderer, and when it comes to output resolution it has no strict resolution limit. The output options in Toolbag 2 will present several common resolution presets supported by your graphics card/processor, but also offers custom resolutions to be entered manually. In fact you will probably run into file type resolution limits before you run into any hardware limits. For example .tga I believe has a resolution limit of 65k x 65k.
There are currently no plans on a bridge ZBrush but they have added that to the list.
Aurick,
Here are some remarks about r7 in regard of my use of Zbrush.
I’m a digital artist and my ideal ultimate result is a print at least 3000x 4000, 300 dpi using more than 20 subtools.
So with this profile, what the r7 will bring to me.
It seems that the dpi will stay to 75 dpi in Zbrush
Now I will be able to print maximum an image at 2400x1600 at 100 dpi or a postcard at 300 dpi with Keyshot 5 HD (250$).
I will have to pay 2000$ to be able to print a 3000x4000 image, 300 dpi with Keyshot pro and 250$ for the bridge… 2250$( or 1500 if upgrade?) minimum; not knowing if Zbrush 5 will do all that.
Also I don’t know if, in a scene with many subtools, i will be able to transfer all subtools, one after an other, to Keyshot respecting the same layout of my Zbrush scene and after that, to render.
I need this informations to do the best choice.
Thanks Aurick and Pixologic team!
I love marmoset , keyshot started running fairly bad with mediocre resolution meshes and marmoset did great so far. Because of it’s native support for polypaint it’s not that difficult to import everything and set up the scene , but a bridge would be very appreciated.
In terms of difficulty, I’d say it’s a tiny bit more difficult to use than keyshot, but barely …
Although I don’t suppose I’ll get keyshot, I intend to rant against the rant.
ZBrush is still the 3D software that shook and changed the 3D world. Started as a drawing application that could use 3D meshes as tools to draw with, it has grown into the sculpting software that is not only often imitated but never equalled, it is also still the most artist friendly.
This new upgrade once again adds a number of tools that form a foundation that can only grow, expand and be refined in the future.
And once again this is for free. Meaning you do not have to pay for it.
And as far as Keyshot is concerned: you do not have to pay for it either unless you yourself, ofyour own free will, decide to add it to your toolset. Pixologic does not even try to convince you. You decide. All they do is propose you the offer.
And yes, me personally, I would love a better and tighter integration with Modo, just like you perhaps with Maya, or Max, or Cinema, Blender,…
And I would have preferred this to be Indigo Render, or Octane instead of Keyshot.
But it isn’t.
And at least I am not forced to pay for it to be able to use ZBrush 4.7.
=========
This ends my anti-rant.
@ Ricor from the videos shown at the summit all tools are exported as polygons to the render engine and keyshot definately can handle it as long as your procesor can. Also lets not forget you will still have BPR and Best Renders as well. Let
s not forget they are adding options not removing.
I asked about the Marmoset because I am considering upgrading mines to 2, but when I saw keyshot I was thinking well maybe I should go that route. Still undecided but the only justification not to use Toolbag so far for me is a bridge.
I was REALLY interested in the Keyshot until all the talk of “limited” resolution. Would like to get clarification from Pixologic on that once it comes out BUT for now, at work we do “box shots” or “glory renders” in MODO for our sculpts. With what I have seen so far, limited pixels in Keyshot, and already owning MODO I dont think they will go for buying it for us (OR even buying a full version of Keyshot…$2000) unless I get better quality. In our studio, more people use MODO then ZBrush for their modelling (7-8 artist mind you, small studio) I just can never get a great transfer/GoZ to MODO, which would help if the connection/bridge to MODO was improved like it is with Keyshot. Would LOVE that also.
Still…gonna wait for an “official” pixologic release on the specifics Keyshot. I did go and read the Keyshot forums, was hoping that wasn’t “official”
Resolution: Absolutely agree with what’s being said. 4.1 megapixels is too small. For what I do, it might be useable but still, a bit on the small side.
Marmoset: It looks fairly awesome based on what little I’ve seen of it. Going to have to look into that more. Didn’t even know it existed until I saw someone mention it here in the comments.
Octane v Keyshot: Eeehhhhhh. I like Octane’s speed but Octane has always been a nuisance to use imo. I hate the Octane UI. XC Even still, I would rather have seen a bridge with Octane than Keyshot. Octane offers more control and the results come much faster.
Anti-rant rant: Yeah, we know, Pixo is awesome. We wouldn’t be here if we didn’t agree. We’re all Pixo-cheerleaders here… well, I sure know I am anyway. Zbrush is the single greatest boon to my artistic career ever, even over Photoshop. I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels that way. That doesn’t mean we don’t think Zbrush could be improved. I realize not everyone can have every one of their specific, personal artistic needs catered to and addressed by Pixo. I think most of us understand that and accept it. However, if enough people want the same things and we voice those desires, Pixo might respond by adding those things.
There’s nothing wrong with saying “I want x.” So don’t scold people for merely expressing their opinions. It’s not like we’re at Pixo’s door with torches and pitchforks demanding they implement every single one of our specific artistic needs.
I bought octane on a whim when I played with it once , then found marmoset shortly after and regretted buying octane badly
Anyway I got this from a marmoset dev :
“We’ve been talking about this in house quite a bit, hopefully we can do some sort of zbrush integration at some point.”
Quite a few people asking questions here, but please bear in mind: What was said at the Summit is summarized in the FAQ at the start of this thread. If it was not said at the Summit, we can’t talk about at this time.
Thanks!
Watching the demos, I was very impressed by the way Hard surface modelling has progressed in Zbrush, keeping in mind it is a Digital sculpting tool at its core strength. I think those who will most benefit from this upgrade are those who don’t own another 3D modelling application, but of course this could well be a huge time saver when doing minor geometry changes that would otherwise have required the Goz process. 64 bit I speculate that this will be the biggest thing that will impact the way Zbrush currently limits me. I think it was a wise move to call this version 4.r7, and to Beta test 64 bit, spot on. Being that its free leaves no room to complain, thanks for your dedication to Zbrush Pixologic team.
Keyshot I am very impressed with, and was almost sold on it. Not a fault of Pixologic, but Keyshot has really jumped from one extreme to the other in their versions features. The HD version of Keyshot unfortunately is very limited at no fault to Pixolgic, and to be fair is priced very fairly according to how much Keyshot is sold for. The down fall I feel is on Keyshots side to under cut the HD version from some very essential features, and limit its resolution. I understand that if Pixologic was to have a Pro version of Keyshot, even with discount by reason of locking it to Zbrush Bridge would be out of most hobbies reaches for the average budget, but maybe would have been a good idea to those who are freelancing, and do need larger render resolutions, and some layering, and render passes. Im a Modo user so it makes little sense for me to get onto the Keyshot deal, but do hope that at least a Pro version is going to be offered at some point.
All in all Pixologic has given so much, and I think a majority of us appreciate what has been done to make Zbrush better than anyone could have imagined. Keep up the good work guys.
Danny.
@PhilW222 - I suppose I could add one more layer to get objects rendered in Keyshot. So I assume this edition of keyshot will be a closed for zbrush then. Thanks for the reply!
Haven’t watches the videos yet, any news on a sub tool manager of any kind? That thing is just a wall of objects and I hope they have at least implemented some kind of grouping/folder system for it

Well received Aurick, I’ll wait.
Furthermore, you have the chance to have some valuable informations on KeyShot and on our needs to allow you to adjust your target with different levels of cost, if necessary.
Congratulations again for the quality of the summit 2014 and for the other improvements made by Revision 7.

I’m not a pro, I just love ZBrush it’s like having a magic workshop where
I can make anything I can think of. So I was a little surprised that all the
really cool new toys are being drowned out by a plug-in option. I use LightWave
to render in so key shot dosen’t even matter. To those great people at zbrush
developement well done And thanks for the had work, Please keep it up.
