by the way, these settings you took are excellent choice, however, you can go with 32gb of ram since zbrush will be in 64bits, right ? ^^ for the graphic card, if you plan to only use zbrush, you can directly remove it and since zbrush rely mainly on processor… unless you will keep it for playing games ?
With 4R7 your primary concerns will be RAM (amount and speed) and CPU.
Since 4R7 will have be available in a (beta) 64-bit version it will be able to use as much RAM as your system has. This will primarily benefit you when dealing with lots of SubTools, layers and subdivision levels.
The CPU will affect rendering speed and how smooth your interaction with the mesh is while sculpting. More cores is a more important consideration than core speed. The easiest way to compare CPU’s is to multiply the speed by the number of cores, then compare the resulting values. So a dual core processor at 4 GHz (value of 8) is actually inferior to a quad core processor at 3 GHz (value of 12).
SSD will not make much difference at all – especially with the 64-bit version of ZBrush. This is because it only comes into play when ZBrush has to write to disk. That’s primarily when saving files and compacting memory. The former is an infrequent operation and the latter will rarely happen in a system with lots of RAM. I’d just go with a 7,200 rpm mechanical drive.
And no, your GPU doesn’t play a role at all.
Of course, all of this only applies to ZBrush. If you’re using other apps that require GPU and/or do a lot of writing to disk, then keep those in mind.
Aurick. Will the 64 bit perhaps get rid of the black when I’m sculpting? What I mean is if I’m working away what I end up seeing is some sort of artifact build up. If I jiggle the mouse a bit it goes away but upon working on the sculpt again it returns until the next jiggle of the mouse. I figured it was brought on by the program only being 32 bit. If not then it’s a mystery to me. :o

That seems more possibly a display or graphics card issue than a bug in ZBrush. If it is a bug, I haven’t heard of it before.
Odd since it’s happened for many years and upgrades and MANY NVIDIA graphics cards with many Windows OS’s. I’m more prone to using the NVIDIA cards since that’s the card that works best with DAZ Studio and I like the NVIDIA cards too!
@ RAMWolff I hadn’t experienced that EVER… It has to be something on your end… maybe a HDMI or MONITOR issue?
I have a good monitor, a ViewSonic and hooked up to the NVIDIA card using the DVI port. I’ve tried the HDMI and the VGA ports with the same results.
I have the same issue here but supposed it to be normal behaviour as I remember haveing had it in previous versions also. As it is only a minor viewport problem I never gave it much attention.
It is a bit annoying but then again I’m used to much worse from the days I still used Cinema4D. And no, I do not use an old card but an EVGA 4GB GTX 770 card now. With the latest driver.
Perhaps it will be gone with the 64bit version. The two are not related, but with OpenGL one never knows.
Glad to know I’m not the only one! lol
I do have a new system on it’s way to me. I can’t wait.
Hope you don’t mind if I post the list of goodies… Bought from CyberPower, down in the San Jose a few miles from where I live!

I’m a total Gigabyte fan. Love their boards. Best in my opinion. I wanted more memory but this is a newer memory type so hopefully it will be speedier than what I have on my old machine I’m on now. I live in an old building with old wiring so when I realized that the entire machine running only used about 400 WATTS I decided to go easy and just got a 650 WATT power supply rather than the 800 that came default with the original specs. I love CyberPower as they have a really nice way to customize stuff. Instantly updates the price and all that. Got this ordered on Black Friday so some good prices and free shipping! Been buying from them for years now. They only pissed me off once when I was having issues they never got back to me… that’s changed now as they are ON IT when you contact them.
So yea, I’m hoping the 64 bit and this new rig will erase that artifact stuff in the view port.
I also have the same issues
“CPU: Intel® Core™ i7-5820K Six-Core 3.30GHz 15MB Intel Smart Cache LGA2011-V3”
WHAT? are you daft?? why don’t you go with intel i7 5960X which it’s a 8-cores so, it will be more faster!
joke aside, it’s a very good specs you did choose
HAHAHA… well I couldn’t go any higher. I think, actually, there was one more up but it would have knocked my price total over the $2000.00 mark. There was allot of stuff I opted out for. Some I can harvest from my current rig so that saved me a bit but some I just had to say no too. Not the most I’ve spent on a computer but times are a bit slimmer these days. Glad you like the specs. I’ll try to do better next time!
Those specs look very good Richard, good luck with it.
As for your issue with ZBrush, you pretty much ruled out a graphics card issue. Hopefully it won’t happen with your new computer.
o.m.m.
one month more!!!
Hold in there! Looking back, I believe ZB4R5 was released around Dec 20th/21st (2012). I’m kinda looking at those dates, unless something goes drastically wrong during testing.
‘Good things come to those who wait’
As we’re talking systems: Cintiq 22HD on order!! Happy Days!! 24HD would have been my choice, but just to big for my box room office!
Anyone got any experience with Zbrush and 22HD? Was it a good choice? Can always send it back. I’ve been using the cintiq 12WX but it was just too small, especially with side bars on. Would be nice if 4R7 had a hotkey (like Photoshop) to max/min GUI. I know someone wrote a script, but still would like to see it in 4R7 or ZB5 at least.
cheers
Aurick, thank you. That’s exactly the kind of answer I was looking for.

I say keep it! One of my friends who is studying in the local CG college got a Cintiq 22HD for his birthday this summer gone and it is absolutely amazing to work with. He uses ZBrush and Maya and says he can’t be without the Cintiq now. I had a play with it and I am hooked too. Whenever I have wedge enough to spare, I will be buying one myself.
I think the cintiq is better used for 2d illustrations, it slows me down in 3d. I would have went with a wacom tablet

I use a 21ux. Upgraded from an intuos several years ago. Couldnt upgrade software packages for a while since i blew my budget on the cintiq but it was the best investment ive probably ever made. The only problem ive ever had with it is holding my arm up to it all day starts to get a little tiring. Nothing too bad though, just wish sometimes the 21ux was more flat so that i could lay it flat on my desk and look down onto it. I always felt the intuos disconnected me from my work. It felt to me as if I were trying to do my best work on one of those old school classroom projectors.
I never mapped the hotkeys in zbrush to the 21ux, i did in PS a while back but discovered i still preferred the keyboard.
In reference to Aurick’s response on specs.
I have yet to upgrade my system from 32 bit Windows Vista with 4 gigs of ram.
Go ahead and laugh…
I am thinking that the Keyshot Bridge will be useless for me as they currently do not support Vista and thinking 32 bit as well. Will R7 still run for me or will i have to upgrade to Windows 7??? If R7 is sluggish on my machine will i be able to still use R6 as it runs pretty smooth???
Currently saving some money to build a new machine for Graphics, but in the meantime would like to continue working on projects.
