Pixolator Rock Challenge (The technique has been cracked....see page 7)

Hi Mentat the Seven
The red Skull above seems on a custard meringue  Miam miam miam
Very appetizing
A delicious for the eyes !
And the green seems very fresh

MTB, if I may …

STEP BY STEP for dr. jjwow:

:large_orange_diamond: make some terrain or object
:large_orange_diamond: paint it however you like
:large_orange_diamond: add grooves and pits with whatever brush and ZSub only*
:large_orange_diamond: duplicate the layer and paint the new layer with darker or contrasting colors
:large_orange_diamond: use Blur brush with ZAdd only and a low Z intensity (plus whatever alpha and draw-size suit your fancy) -- this will seem to rub away the dark layer from the surface but not the pits and grooves
  • [edit] this should read: “add grooves, pits, bumps, veins, etc. using whatever brush and either ZAdd or ZSub” – see Mentat’s post below – the main thing is to distress the surface so it has some variety of depth

Wow! Lonnie’s gettin wicked with the Z!
:+1: :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1:

Thanks Mike. Just a side note. It is NOT necessary to use ONLY ZSUB when adding your deformations to the image. ZADD will also aid in getting you the necessary “noise” to achieve this effect. In fact ZADD can be used to help increase the height of relief areas. I have been using it exactly for that purpose.

Same here. The trick is simple…as long as the surface has blemishes…no matter how they are made…is the important part. In fact, I think pix used plenty of the smudge brush for that gray image I was looking at.

Also, if you move the darker layer back in z about 1 to 3 pixols, you will see a dynamic effect on how much antiquing comes through.

Okay, I am ammending the challenge. Though I don’t think it will be as hard as the original, there is still some difficulty on my part. I am trying to achieve the structure of the rock below. Once I have this, the rest is down hill. I have tried different subs and cuts but I know I am missing something. That’s ammendment 1. Ammendment 2 is the grass in the next image. It gives me the feeling that this was not painted in after baking…or was it…then unbaked?..don’t know. I think it possible that the fiberBrush thickness was set to 3 or more and the actual dino image is AAHalf…making it huge!..I am going to experiment tonight on this stuff but if anyone else wants to give it a go…cool!
Namek…I noticed you have a similar rock structure in you image on page 1. If you may share how you made it please?
So, some help would be cool and let the mystery unfold!

Thanks everyone.
Peace.

yeah the rock structure was what I was after … :stuck_out_tongue:

it’s quite easy , bulk up a hill with the bumpbrush using the normal alpha , then select the scales alpha and Zcut with the bumpbrush and spray stroke.
This way you cut out the shape like in pix’s image.

Still wondering how to get the fibrebrush to produce the grass though , allthough I think Juandel produces grass like that too…

I think Pix’s grass is made of several layers of varying fiber thicknesses. Large thick fibers then layered on top of that with finer thickness (and no ZAdd…probably after baked).

Mike do you remember this picture? He has been transformed into the Bengal Dragon. This technique is so cool for illustrations!! I may have to pursue this creature further and do a full body workup.

omg , that looks cool :stuck_out_tongue:

ps : do you guys still visit the IRC channel sometimes ?

I know i’m in a different time zone , but I never see anyone there ;(

Thanks Mentat7 and MTB for the topic and the script

Some awsome pics in here
That Dragon creature looks really really cool with this technique, Mentat7

Wicked awesome lonnie!
As for the grass…I assume before bake because it seems to be properly shaded…

Yeah we chat Namek…though I havent been there in a while. okay its 3:15 PM where I am…what about you?

23.26 at the moment michael
so that’s 11.26 pm I think.

btw a very fast doodle :stuck_out_tongue:

Pix definitely has his own style for making grass. If you look closely you will notice he made it pretty much the same way he did the pine needles in his nature thread (the one with the tree people and the glowing gate). You can put down a layer of grass, bake it then add more on top with material and ZAdd on. It doesn’t have to all be done at once. I also think the rocks you were asking about may exhibit some of the other features of the new material…remember he said he was using an experimental one. He mentioned you could get a similar result with 1.55b but the key word here is similar. I suspect there are a few tweaks in the new material that are just easier to do. I also think he used a different alpha for those rocks. None of the standard alphas are giving me results like in his picture. So I am going to issue a plea:

PIXOLATOR: could you please share with us your grass/foliage creation technique…the one used in your Dino Picture?

Of course with that plea comes the challenge as well. Can we duplicate the technique before Pix responds? The clock is ticking…

lol , lonnie are going for the record amount of pages on this one ? :stuck_out_tongue:

Btw : do you still have that challenge picture of pixolator mentat ? with the wooden models and the grass. I remember they were some kind of guardians holding the key to the forest. I found the thread on cgtalk but all links to the images are broken. :frowning:

I think Alpha Century holds that record Namek but who knows…

Lol…Awe yeah! Its on now!!!

As for the rock…I assumed as much on the look/mood of the rock being the new mat. Right now…all I want is structural similarity…

Here is Pixolator’s Enchanted Forest thread for reference.

Wow you duracel guys just keep going  Those two last pics really blew my mind Mentat. They look reeeaaaly cool :+1: :+1: I have to try that out.

We should definetely do more of these kind of threads.

Great pictures everyone. :+1:

Alright!..thats it!!..I’m going in!!!
