Other commercial applications discussion thread

I think 3d coat will be an excellent app, hopefully with this latest release.
I don’t imagine it stealing the ZB users, just adding them, I think these two will play well with each other.

It’s finally here!

Seems that Modo 401 is about to be available… shortly…

Here is a special upgrade deal which I found and it’s cheaper than LUX directly:

For that price I had to sign up… Big update…

does anyone know of a utility that would pull up an alphabet when you put your cursor in a form box and then allow one to scroll/slide through the alphabet by moving the mouse sideways, clicking to accept letters. i’m trying to avoid keyboard use as much as possible and just use my tablet. i use a OSK but its still something i have to call up and is somewhat awkward.

Ewww - scrolling through the alphabet to select a letter sounds really clunky. What about a screen keyboard instead?. I’m sure there’ll be one out there for the Mac.

I just typed ‘Screen keyboard’ into google and got several links…

Here’s one: http://www.alltogetherwecan.com/2007/06/08/on-screen-keyboard-in-os-x/

actually i’m on PC and i use a onscreen keyboard, i’ve tried a few, its a hassle, i guess growing up with the old nintendo and other game systems the way you could just cycle through letters, thats what i want. even the first arcade games had this functionality.

luxology sent me an email that had a discount on Pre order upgrades and purchases for the next two days, -$100.00 off. $295.00 for an upgrade. hair we go. :+1: :+1:

Modo is becoming more and more awesome, and aslo , with GoZB the combo will be really killer !!

Hey all - the darkside has announced Mudbox 2010:

They are sooo far behind its not even funny. The clone brush does look kind of cool though.

In terms of an artistic sculpting app, I agree it’s not currently a match for ZBrush. However, where it blows ZB out of the water is the interface and navigation. Anyone who uses Maya can load MB and instantly use it. I’ve seen many people try ZB for a morning and give up with pure UI frustration. If anyone could create a Maya style UI for ZB, I guarantee Pix would get more sales.

Not the maya interface for god sake :o max would be a better idea if you ask me. But I don’t find Zbrush 3.1 interface that hard to use at all, it’s a bit tricky, but so are all programs on first use, pixologic doeas a great job of providing us with the scripts and tutorials, in combo with gnomonology and digital tutors.

I don’t see Mudbox as being behind ZBrush. It’s not trying to be a full featured sculpting tool. It’s a detailing tool that’s supposed to be used along side other tools (like Maya).

It’s not taking part in the race. it’s sat beside the track eating a sandwich and happily reading the paper.

3DCoat is the only tool that’s competing with ZBrush.

But if Autodesk were to add Mudbox to Maya…

There are some “not so happy” Mudbox users over on the Area. If you guys considered a cross-grade offer I think many would finally come over to Zbrush. They just aren’t delivering over there and it appears that Pixologic is.

BTW, this isn’t a Mudbox vs. Zbrush tnread.

Mudbox developpers spent a lot aof time debugging V 2009. So they didn’t had much time adding interesting new tools. There’s not even a decent color picker.
3d coat has nice features, but they also need some refinement… I can only use it as a side app, with Zb

I think that the real competition will start next year.

In the meantime, up to me, Zbrush 3.5 is the most valuable sculpting app. furthermore, 3.5 will be fully intgrated into a pipeline with GoZ and HD extraction.

Wayne Robson actually just announced Mudwalker a plugin which will do the same thing as GoZ. It actually exports directly to Headus UvLayout as well. The race just got a little more interesting.

As far as i know it only exports out of mudbox.
Not really something to compare to goZ.

Ok - race a little less interesting.

Modo has always interested me but never had the time to get into it.

as for ZBrush getting Maya IU, nawh
when I first started out with ZBrush I was Maya FanBurry too and started to second guess my buying ZBrush because I couldn’t make and move polygons the same way in Maya. Now I’m sort of over the hump.

Zbrush and Maya has a lot in common actually:

  • pallets are loaded on the side
  • option to hide entire UI an use floating menu
  • scripting and 1100 menus / options etc,…
…as for 3DSMax I didn’t like its UI when I was Newb an recently when tried Max 2009. I still don’t like it conspired to Maya …Bah! & Meh! my congrats to anyone whos mastered it.

while I’m at it everyone Go Try Terragen 2 by Planetside its finally finish!

Well i would like to get some opinions by people that used or use 3d coat and z-brush and understand the relationship and the difference that this 2 applications offers (some of the positive and negative aspects of them both) thank you very much for your time.
