this effects can be achieved using zsphere (zsketch, with a small brush stroke upon a sphere or other objects) or better using 3ds max drawing splines upon the surface of a model in edit poly,
make the splines renderable and convert them so that can be exported in ZB, then clone them, rotate them and use the move topology brush so that strings don’t intersecate.
Add some noise or use the group loops features for other effects…
join this with meats Meyer technique or mine/Gutalin and you can reach a complexity unbelievable - imagine also in 2.5D with layers…ARGH…

It’s very cool but i think there are other ways…i’m still searching…so you too guys

I have a VERY quick way, and it involves neither ZSpheres (which I love) or Max which I have never seen.
I just made an IMM brush and scribbled it on to a sphere then deleted the sphere leaving only the brush stroke.
I will post it at the bottom…

See above. (that image is very helpful, a totally black background makes it easier, I used a filled background in the first attempt.

As I said this took 30 seconds from start to finish, so its just quick and dirty but it works!
Also I think these CAN be done in 3D with Smooth Normals on in the render pallet and VERY low rez IMM brush but I have not tried that yet.

excellent, also because i’m not still into IMM brushes (which is a great feature)…seems very easy in this way but do you can follow the surface of a model so that strings seems to wrap it ?

Cool tip with the IMM Brush(s) - I used mirror and weld (Geometry > Modify Topology > Mirror and Weld) and varied the draw size for this one but I am not seeing how to delete the base mesh -
in subtools it only shows the one object and when I delete it it deletes everything.
