Need a crit on a famous face

might i suggest a Sub Surface Scattering layer and putting it through mental ray? would definately add a touch more life to it. crackin job on the sculpt tho. shame that no matter what happens your going to end up with princess laya hahaha what a grumpy old bag she was. cant wait to see the updates comming back to this thread.

henrysouth- thank you for the C&C. I agree- materials will be getting some work soon.

When I saw the first post in this thread, I had some doubts, but now that you posted this last rendering, I really thing you did a great job, it looks right. The hands are excellent too, you can almost ‘feel’ them grasp the guns. I do, however think that she has narrow shoulders.
g

I agree Greg- the start was weak- but I think it still can go farther. I also agree about the shoulders- I have raised them- but I think they can go broader. I am a little worried about going to far- it will probably be a small adjustment  Strong but feminine

Craig

The Princess indeed!

Shoulders: broader, rounder.
Skin tone: Add a smidge of yellow (the fat beneath the skin is actually slightly translucent, which is why subsurface scattering makes skin look so darn real…

The hair is great!

you really are spot on, how ever I noticed that her cheeks where to round, they should be slightly invards, right now she looks way much younger than she should, not that i hurts though. and the skin color right now looks very much like a dolls, good start though, add some yellows to the forhead and around the mouth, and some blues around the eyes and go from there. just want to say great work!

Here are some changes- the shoulder width has been re-proportioned. The hand recieved some slight changes. I added an SSS shading setup for the head (not the arms yet- I want to get the head right first). I made some lighting changes that I liked for the head, but now I feel that the guns have lost on the detail. The new focus will be to finish the arms and get the lighting down.

markkens- shoulders are broader- but I think they may need some work (rounder as you suggested). The suggestion of yellow helped as I developed the SSS shader.

jenzi_mpk- thank you for your color suggestions. I hope this is starting to look better. I may need to add some more blue around the eyes? Then again- I am following the look of Episode IV where she has some red eyeshadow. She may look young- but that is the intention. This has been a big struggle with the piece- Carrie Fisher aged quite a bit between episode IV and VI. In fact- I think some people have suggested that she needs more facial fat. For now- I’ll leave it as is.

Image reposted in later entry.

Craig

John Strieder- thanks for the comments. I will not be making her any older. No blue makeup around the eyes- but maybe some of the natural blueish blood pigment (it will be subtle if I add it).

I’m reposting the same image here- small complication, no eyelashes.

Looks like Carrie Fisher to me. You might want to work on the eyes though, right now they are the key thing taking away from the realism. They need to be shinier, with a good reflection map. Also some more texture in her clothes would be nice. Also some harder folds in her clothes would add to the realism. The easiest way to achieve that is to use the slash1 brush with low zsub intensity, then use the smooth brush to take care of the roughness.

I’d also like to add that her face is too symetrical. Asymetry is the key to realism. If you take one of those reference photos you have and draw a line down the middle, you’ll notice each side of her face has slight differences. Hope that helps. Good job so far.

Great work so far, she’s really coming to life!

The skin of her hands and arms needs a slight–very subtle–texture or granularity - perhaps your SSS will do this when applied there the same way it’s working for her face.

Also note the resting position of a finger bone is down the center of the finger; as the finger curls each joint moves to the outside of the finger’s centerline, and tightens (subtly whitens) the color above each joint. Adding this to your shader might break up the doll-like coloration of the hands.

Cool! The face part looks pretty perfect to me.

Looks good. The positioning is great. Her glance is nice. The only thing I can offer is that the face texturing does not look realistic.
She is too pale and the makeup is too severe.
This is a common problem that happens when male artists do makeup on female models. We have a tendency to paint them up like a two-dollar whore.
Makeup is a difficult thing to master. That is why there are people who are payed tons of money just to do makeup for actors/models/etc…

Keep at it. You’re almost there.

Hey guys- love the critiques- keep them coming

JesseGraffam- good critiques. I had to make some changes to my eyesetup- I realized that the HL was not positioned right and I need to make up for it. The face has asymetry that isn’t too far off from Carrie Fisher- but I pushed it farther. I personally think that she has a face that isn’t too asymetrical, and if you look at it from an angle (as I have it) its hard to see the asymetry. Hopefully the new post has some of what you were looking for.

markkens- good ideas- I will keep them in mind for the hand shading

Erklaerbar- thanks

kaibosh- I’ll look into it. In my defense- I suggest that we recognize that caked on makeup was exactly the look of Princess Leia in Star Wars Episode IV. The references I’ve been studying to stay true to her look are quite pale and overdone with makeup. I don’t want her to look like a whore  and I’m interested in making changes artistically… but there is a reason she looks the way she does beyond me being a male doing female makep

Thanks again for the critiques- they are very helpful and I will look into making changes based on them.

Good. Eyes look a lot better. I can see you added a little asymetry in there. Mainly in the size of her right (your left) eye. Looking at her hands I think some variation in cool and warm spots in her hands need some texturing tweaks. Also her nails are too flat and need to be 2 toned and have a cuticle.

I just updated the arm shader as well as did some work on the nails and the area around the eyes. Please let me know what you think.

Hey John

Thanks for the catch- I think I had my BackScatter Depth set too high. I’m still playing with this for a little while before posting- thank you for the critique.

Craig

Made a new pose, and lowered the glow in the arm. Please let me know your thoughts:

i dissagree, i think the new pose is far more human, i felt the first one was looking a bit boxy and maybe tooo symmetrical, the new one is more dynamic.

because humans arnt robots hahaha, its like facial modelling, the truely brilliant ones are asymmetrical, it looks wrong if its perfectly the same on both sides. if u take a picture of your face and cut it dead center to paste it onto the other side it looks freaky. i guess i just feel a closer connection with the set of her sholders in the second pose. like shes ready for action haha. i never saw the attraction of princess leya myself. im more of a scully man hehehe.

i spose but it doesnt look as boxy in the new pose. i like your work by the way john, good stuff!
