Need a crit on a famous face

Piz- thank you so much for you in depth study of the face of Leia. In some areas I didn’t agree with the changes- but I did see some areas (esp. the hair line and the bridge of the nose) that could use some changes. I made some tweaks- and I like the results- but I may have to revisit those areas again to perfect them.

I am not happy with the appearance of the hair buns at this point- i think I will need to do a better displacement. I do have plans to go to a final render- so please look at this work as needing still final lights and shaders. I dimmed the light a little so it didn’t blow out as much… but this is far from final shading/lighting.

She looks good! I think you have added rightly some asymmetries that give more realism to the character. I think that she is becomed very similar to the original… (expecially in the first and the third shot).

Also I’m happy that my little contribution was useful for your already nice work.

I’m, sice I saw Starwars, a fanatic of the Episodes IV V and VI… and I happy to see Leila well done in 3d. :+1:  :+1:

P.S.
Craig, do you want export the Leila model in Maya? Or you think to use the ZBrush materials… Recently I saw a lot of very good render without export.

I have seen some great renders in Zbrush- and part of me thinks it would be fun and a good learning experience to run this out of Zbrush… but I also have a belief (and experience) that as demo work, zbrush render/materials will not sell as well. In the end, I prep my work with the possibility of animating- I will not animate it, but I prep it so it is animation ready. Its exta work, but I’d rather get more experience in a commonly used render like Mental Ray then Zbrush because I see Zbrush rendering as specialized to 3D illustration (At this point…)

Craig

I agree… I’ll come back for the update…
Ciao Craig!

Once again, its been awhile. My schedule these days is pretty full- so I don’t know what kind of time I have to work on this project. I’m not the fastest artist, but I think I will keep coming back to this piece as long as there is time to do it.

This is far from done- body is just started, I have plans for more texture work, material work, and reworking what is done here with your critiques. Luckily- I have the next week off from work, so I should be able to work on this a little.

Thank you
Craig

Wow! Very good update Craig! :+1:

WOW !
exact sculpting and beautiful textures, splendidly.:+1:

I’m glad that you can give this work some more attention, because it really deserves it! Is the pose an actual pose from the movies? Looking forward to your updates.

If you could work on the skin some (I guess a little translucency or something) then it’d be great. She’s really quite pink as it is now. Other than that, it’s a dead ringer for Carrie Fisher.

…with some guns!
Cool works :+1:

Thanks for the kind words guys

Just so you know- I agree with the crits- she has more work coming. Before then- I do have a pose question. The pose I showed above wasn’t the original pose I had in mind… but I kind of started to like it. Its not a pose you ever see in the movie (she never has two guns), but I think it might work since this is an homage piece. Below is a mock up of the pose I thought I was going to do (its just a study I did quickly to figure how I might crop the final image- photo is an early shot in the movie). So- which is better? Go with the current pose more original pose, or go with a more accurate pose from the movie. Personally- I like the current (two gun) pose, but I’d like to get a second opinion.

The two gun pose fits Han more then Leia but I can see why you would like it. I personally prefer your original idea though.

Here is a larger image with an update on the hands, hair. Plenty more to do, please offer any critiques. For now- I’ve decided to go with the two gun approach. Teyon- I agree that the pose is a bit off from a traditional Leia pose, but I’ll chalk it up to artistic license. John Strieder, thanks for the encouragement.

great!! really love the likeness

looking slick! my only crit is that the hands seem too perfect/cg. the fingers on the real actor aren’t as tall as you have them currently and taper off without too many buldges like you have modeled. another common mistake is that the flesh on the fingers isn’t looking like it’s pressed down on anything. another is not giving the individual fingers the time they deserve to look similar, but not scaled down clones of the first finger modeled.

my other crit is to break the symmetry on the arm angles  asymmetry is a beautiful thing in cg.

good work overall though, dude. the texture and modeling on the face and hair is looking ace  keep us updated!

Hey craig, i thought i would pop in here and return the favor

First of all sweet model, its coming along really good.

Maybe you are going to do this later with blendshapes and such if shes going to be animated. But i think abit of asymmetry would do alot, like for instance, her left eye is a bit bigger than her right eye.
What i can see her eyebrows are a bit more curved and going more along with the brow. Maybe the texture colors could be a bit more muted, like the red on the lips and cheeks, but this is most likley because they are a WIP

oh and I think the two guns pose is awesome, she looks more empowered and strong.

This is just my humble opinon and if anyone else mentioned this before I apologize for repeating it

I really look forward to updates!

//Jin

Thanks for the critiques folks.

alexia- Thank you for the encouragment

nuggets- I agree with everything being said. The hands need plenty of work- and its helpful to get your thoughts on what needs to be improved.

jinji
Thanks for the critique. I will look into what you mentioned- some of it has been addressed, but maybe visiting it again might be a good idea. I totally agree about the coloration of the texture- more to follow on that. I have offset the eye sizes (not the eyeballs- but the opening… or do you actually mean the eyeballs themselves). The curvature of the eyebrow is smoother I agree in the ref posted on this page. I have seen it more angular in others (I think they are mostly painted on with makeup). I was thinking about revisiting this element- making her expression a little (small amount) sharper.

Thank all of you again for the insight. I have a seperate project (also known as my job;) ) that is taking all my creative energy these days. Hopefully I will have an update soon enough. Thanks for the patience.

Craig

hey, I thought I would through in a couple of hints on the makeup and nails. I know it has been said before, but I think the makeup should be a lot more subtle. especially the eyeliner on the bottom toward the nose. This should fade to almost nothing.

The nail beds need to have more of a pink hue. She needs more variation in her skin tone on her face.

looking great.

A small update before I proceed. I started the texturing of the guns, did some work on the hands, reduced the eyeliner, made some changes to the cloth, and made some small changes in the brow. Thank you for your critiques, they are very helpful. The only thing really textured so far is the head and guns, and they are still very much works in progress. I appreciate the insights on the lacking textures, and they will be addressed hopefully soon. The lack of asymetry in the arms will also be eventually addressed- but for now I'm just working on one arm and mirroring it.

jamesvl- Thank you for the critique. I agree- the nail texture (and arms in general) need some work. More to come. I did make some eyeliner changes- but it might need some more tweaking.
