Mac & Zbrush 3 Thread

I certainly hope so. Not to dis any of the amazing talent shown in the ZBrush Callery, but I personally get tired of looking at all that grotesque monster stuff that’s obviously in vogue. I expressed this opinion a few years back on another 3D forum and really got jumped on for it. Guess I’m old fashioned, but I hope some of the Mac artists will lean toward reality, like ordinary human beings–men, women, children, dogs, bunny rabbits and such. And not ones with three heads, scaly tails, and their eyeballs hanging out.

Just one man’s opinion. Go ahead, jump all over me. :stuck_out_tongue:

Ditto from this sector! I too am a traditionally trained artist (Realist Painter)
and still work primarily in oil paint which I have done since the early 80’s. I got turned onto Maya 1.0 on NT from my wife who worked as a programmer for Motion Capture software in the mid-90’s. I have since tried to balance my life as a painter and CGI artist (I do medical animation for a living)

I keep wanting to merge the two - to make big paintings based on what I have made in Maya, Z-brush, Painter, etc. but it is all so time consuming - and I enjoy painting from observation too much. Eventually - once I can install ZB3 on my brand new MacPro with 30" monitor that I got in anticipation of ZB 3’s emminent release.

Some of us aren’t that young anymore and who knows - may not have that much time left to make our Mac ZB 3 masterpieces! However, I have resigned myself to wait until August (Siggraph) after that I give up - and will just have to use ZBrush 3 on my laptop (MacBook Pro with Boot Camp)

Good to hear there are others here on this forum who want use ZB for something other than monster/space babe/organic robots, etc creation.
It is an amazing tool for all kinds of stuff - I think it would particually good for abstract and surreal imagery.

I’m just making the observation that a lot of awesome traditional artists get directed to the Mac platform when they go digital. Try to look at my statements from an objective standpoint. I’m not saying Mac artists are better than PC or Linux artists or there are more of us. I’m saying a lot of experienced physical media artists who have been told to use Mac only do not have access to Zbrush because they bought Macs. Therefore, when Pixologic releases Zbrush for Mac, I think it will reveal more traditional artist’s fine art rather than what we normally see 3d used for. Since PC is the best platform for 3d, most professional 3d artists already use them and own Zbrush. Meanwhile, most painters and airbrushers gone digital use Macs and are waiting on Zbrush. Many probably haven’t even heard of it. The results are bound to be different.

This tendency with Mac artists is all that I’m pointing out. Most pro 3d artists are already running ZB3 on PCs. While a lot of 2d illustrators that bought Macs are patiently (or impatiently) waiting to involve 3d into their works. I’m in the same boat and have BIG plans on incorporating 3d sculptures into 2d paintings. In my opinion, it’s the future of fine art.

Just because there’s more Fords on the road than Porsches…
and
it’s not the magicians wand but the hand that weilds it…

Maybe 3d/fx houses on Linux, but then why do you need
an amazing GUI to plug in command line?? In graphic design
and the aesthetically minded markets Apple has always been
majority leader and that has no sign of changing.

Conversely…

Ah… well I guess all I’m saying is that I think there are probably some people who rarely touch natural media, but still produce amazing digital work, and that use of digital media (even exclusive use) does not cheapen the art… (not implying that that’s what you’re saying either, just trying to clarify). I firmly believe that in order to succeed with digital art, you must truly be an artist, and not just a computer wiz–but I also believe that this doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve ever really gotten into natural media.

And I think the laws of physics might begin to unravel if Escher or Dali got ahold of ZBrush!!

As far as the Mac/PC divide, I have found in my personal experience that graphic designers, illustrators, musicians, fine art/natural media folks, and film post production people (chiefly sound, editing, compositing) use primarily Macs, while 3D visualization, animation, & simulation, engineering/CAD, etc tend to be dominated more by PCs (although not to the extent that office, spreadsheet, word processing, etc applications are).

I agree that seeing monsters and demons and whatnot has become tiresome… but I’m not about to say anything, b/c it’s not as though my talent comes anywhere near that…

On a completely irrelevant note–one form of natural media I’d like to check out is glassblowing. Anyone here done it? x]

I hear it’s a new feature in the Zbrush update called zbong. It’s going to be $29.99 for the USB “straw” accessory that you blow into…yeah…right…

No wonder it’s taking so long!
All the beta testers are probably at Denny’s

I’m finding it quite hard to see; What’s not traditional, in the vast majority of work seen in these galleries. Figure studies, anatomy, realistic representation in general. What could be more traditional than that?

Traditional work is a term referring to creating art the old fashioned way, as opposed to digitally. Don’t confuse the same term with subject matter or fine art. As you suggested the work posted around here is amazing and certainly some of it can be considered fine art, but unless it is at a museum or in someone’s home, there can be arguments against calling it so.

Jeez, is ZB3 here yet? Any news? LOL!

All I can say is I hope there’s no one elderly waiting for this one…

Hey Super Glitcher
I been painting in all mediums (traditional) for about 48 maybe 50 years now, and I am retired from regular work. I have been a Zbrush owner since version 1.5 and a Mac user too so I am waiting and hoping but the longer it’s taking the more my hand shakes
Maybe I’ll get a chance to use version 3.1 on the Mac before my eyesight fails me.
ove to see a couple of threads dedicated to stuff like digital still life and some other traditional art genres.

Hope Pix is getting close to a release for us.

I hear ya, willog. Aside from just wondering when or if we will see ZB3M, I’ve been asking myself, will I live that long? Just had my semi-annual physical and the old bod is still chugging along, but it won’t last forever. For gosh sake, Pixo, step on it!

You guys are cracking me up! Finally I had a laugh on this board. On the other hand, watch, when ZB3 does come out, the next day I’ll get hit by a truck or something! LOL!

I see. Sort of; old fashioned subjects, rendered using modern technology. As opposed to contemporary forms, made using physical media.

Fascinating though. How often graphics software seems to be designed; with the appearance and feel of natural media in mind.

My thought on this is that I have been doing traditional art for professionally for 14 years and I end up with 2d images (photographs or movie stills) in my portfolio any how. I think in many ways it cuts to the chase. Presto 2d image.

Here is a link for those of you that would like to brush up on your posting skills for this thread:

Not quite what I meant. Traditional work, would be the use of oil pants water colors, airbrushing (and that was considered high tech at one point too, and frowned upon by fine artists) I would a lot of digital art could be considered contemporary. Anyway, either way of creating can be fine art (traditional or digital), just kind of depends on the end result.

You offer nothing go away already.
