It’s pretty clear that there’s nobody there and we will have to wait until they get into the office, which may well mean another day of complaints, emails, and maybe still not receiving the software.
Now, I’m the most patient and laid back guy I know (and I get told as much, often). I’m no Buddhist monk, but I generally accept peoples incompetence and failures, because we are all just human and in this life nothing is perfect, so you just have to let it wash over you and be philosophical about your situation. Things rarely work out exactly as planned, especially where human beings are involved.
However, Pixologic is really testing that part of my personality. It’s now 14 hours since I sent an email to their support people/person. Whilst ZBrush is undoubtedly an utterly amazing, fun inducing, art inspiring product, they seem to have failed at every step of the transaction process for many people (email correspondence, delivery of product, licensing). I don’t even expect it to actually work when I finally get the upgrade email. I expect to have to email again and have to ask politely for a license (and hope they reply). Such is my lack of confidence in this process.
Contrast that with buying Modo from Luxology earlier this year. Within minutes I logged in, downloaded it and had it running on my machine. I could even download it again now if I like (they have it on an account page for every customer). I can still log in anywhere to download a copy for Mac or PC (or both), download a license anytime that I need it, install it on any machine that I happen to be using. Easy. With no fuss. This is because I bought it, you see. I own a license to use it, so they think it wise to allow me to have access to it. Easily. Whenever I want. Simple huh?
Software developers, take note. Seriously. It needn’t be rocket science.
Now, having said all that, I’m going to go back to my relatively peaceful existence and hope that when I check back in again later today I find that Pixologic have pulled their finger out and have got the ball rolling, thus allowing me to spend the afternoon, at least, sculpting the obligatory demons and monsters that this excellent software so easily inspires.
