Intel Inside - Experiment

Try these 2 links shonuffhome, I think these reprsent your issue, but either way you’ll have to start a new thread as it is definitely not a MacIntel issue.

Thats for the redirect… that definitely helped. Guess i just need to work on having pieces/parts of the mode there when i edit.

Hi guys -

Im running ZBrush 2 on a Mac Pro (quad Zeon 2.66 with 5 gigs of paired RAM, 1900XT, 30" HD panel and tons of disk space).

I had the same problems as most in this thread with regards to Rosseta and ZB. I ran the script that you provided, Jason, and for the most part it worked as planned. Thanks.

Anyway, I discovered something interesting when I was configuring my UI. I found that disabling Preferences/Misc/SkipWelcomeScreen made my ZBrush startup perfect everytime (yep, no beachball). Now, it could be a fluke and it may not solve anyone else’s problem, but it’s worth a simple try, no? I’ll let you know if it locks up on me again.

Hope this helps some :stuck_out_tongue:

I forgot to mention - I was starting up ZB2 without the script and I had downloaded an Intel update from Apple on 3-17-07.

Also, I wanted to make this clear: what I mean is disable the Welcome Screen at ZB2 startup by selecting Preferences/Misc/SkipWelcomeScreen.

okie, gotta go…

poof

neoflux, can you keep us up-to-date with this. Originally I pegged this as the issue, which got me started on solving this. If others try this and it works, perhaps Apple’s new update does fix something…

I tried neoflux’s idea on my 2.33 GHz MacBook Pro 17" (2 Gig RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive) and it worked like a champ!

I am even getting Zbrush2 to launch from Spotlight, which was not working for me before.

Granted, I’ve only tried it a few times, but so far I’ve had 100% success.

For reference, I was getting succesful ZBrush2 startups using the script provided in this thread approximately 1 in every 3 attempts before trying neoflux’s idea.

will do, Jason.

update: I am continuing to have excellent results starting ZB2 this way. I’m keeping my fingers crossed

Pablosan, did you also get the latest Apple update?

Well I had some time finally. Setting the splash screen under Preferences>Miscellaneous to not show at startup with the New 10.4.9 update gets Zbrush running properly without need of my script anymore. I tried 25 start/stops, one after another without any issue! I loaded Zbrush 2 with QuickSilver as that is my main tool of choice for the OS, perfect. Loaded the app directly from Applications, perfect. Loaded from Spotlight, perfect. Yeah team Apple!

DANGER WILL ROBINSON DANGER!!! The enjoyment may be too much for many of you, be careful!

Anyone trying this and having problems???

Sorry Jason… yes, important detail: my tests were performed after the latest update from Apple, so I am running 10.4.9.

Also, for further clarification, I am no longer using the script to launch ZBrush2 either. Here’s hoping future updates from Apple won’t bring our Utopia crumbling down.

It even seems to be working for me and I couldn’t reliably start ZB by any other method. It’s not 100% reliable but good enough, thanks a LOT!

Well it may be premature but I hereby announce the death of the script! And the death of multi-launch attempts repeatedly! And all the cool kill and wait things the script did, that we started by doing manually!

Of course anyone wishing to puncture my balloon of joy can now take this opportunity…

Works like a charm here on my macbook pro 15" with 2gigs! Awesome find everyone. thats one less headache i’ll have to deal with!
haha…

HI Jason a quick heads up, I got throught the OS X Update no problem thanks to your notifying me of SuperDuper.

Zbrush is almost the same as before, it still runs quite well but the way the startup screen is presented occasionally is interesting, especially when I use your script.
Just to let you know that Apple don’t seem to have messed my system up as I was expecting, especially with all the Audio hardware I have attached via Firewire.
Seems to be a good update but we shall see what bugs we have lost and of course what we have gained.

I hope that Leopard is fairly straightforward, I am sick of spending a year getting everything updated only to have anothe new OS to Install.
Oh well it keeps me occupied, hope all is well with you.

Stuart

Turn of the startup screen in ZB prefs and you should find ZB starts and runs much more reliably! This seems to be the solution for most people under 10.4.9

Alright, all this time and all I really needed to do was bypass the startup screen, amazing.

I now get a full startup on 10.4.9 almost every time, in fact the multiple start attempts are now rare.

Thanks a million.

Stuart

Your welcome, Stuart. I’m glad I was able to help.

It’s interesting to note that even after I installed 10.4.9, ZB2 still acted up (i.e., without disabling the welcome screen). It was only after I disabled the welcome screen that it started up without problems.

What I would like to have done was disable the welcome screen prior to installing 10.4.9 and see if the Intell update had anything significant to do with ZB2 starting up properly. Oh well, it’s too late for that I’m afraid

It would be great if someone were able to test that theory prior to installing 10.4.9.

ciao,
N.

Well actually the startup screen thing was the first option I tested. It worked for me, but was not functional for many others. Then when a particular update came along, it failed to work. So the script was born after much tracking of issues. However the latest OS update and the startup screen off seem to have fixed the problem all around.

At least I hope it has!

Much thanks all around to neoflux for going back and testing that. Perhaps a fix can be implemented at Pixologic to help others. We’ll see, as they are a little busy right now!

Either way, some of you seem to be fully fucntional now!

HI, I might be able t otry out Zbrush on my Macbook Pro, as it was installed on that before I moved to the Macpro and the OS on that should be 10.4.8.
If it is still there, i will give it a go. I May have had to deisntall it to get it operational on the Macpro. Give me a day or so and I will see if that makes any difference. I don’t think it did because as JAson points out that somewhere in the past disabling the splash screen had no effect, but I will try it out OK

Stuart
