hey that was a tough post by abuminalis vbmenu_register(“postmenu_331920”, true); . Just don’t think he got it. I know your busy but wanted to ask you a serious question. I love 3d, I’m a 3d artist in a small video game studio out in NJ. Personely I feel like 3d is missing a genuion feel to it. I just don’t get that stop motion feel of say the old star wars films, ET, ect. How do you think one in the new age can bring that feel home.
thanks
the thrill
Thanks for the movies. The kids got a kick out of those too.
Have fun paying the bills!
What brings the 3d to another level is attention to detail, like everything else in art, i didn’t wanted to sound harsh, but i was expecting more from a man with a such background in the industry. I mean, he models really good in real life, he did amazing creatures in men in black, i wonder why he doesn’t demand the same level of quality in his 3d works? It’s not a tool thing, 3d programs in these days are more advanced than ever, and artist oriented, computers are cheap and fast…
Good Lord, give the man a break. That’s his hobby stuff. I hope his Boss is not getting mad for ‘wasting’ time on that during dinner time ;).

Just want to say. Rick’s digital stuff is better than your stuff. Or lack there of (there’s nothing in your gallery at all). I don’t think your crit was very constructive. You seemed to be saying all of Rick’s digital work is unrealistic. Not at all true, on the contrary, his work is some of the best i’ve seen. Try and be nice here. It’s nice to be nice. One more thing, I’m pretty sure he wanted it to look like the old HH model and not a suped-up naughties (2007) version.
Very inspiring work Rick. Background is spot on as is the cyclops.
Personally I LOVE it, great tribute!!
Man, seems to me that you’re more interested in trolling than giving constructive criticism. Rick’s 3D work is amazing since he started posting on this forum. Check his old man thread and check the details that he put on that face. Tell me it lacks details. Not always details are everything in a work, you know? Sometimes a great idea in a simple work say way more than a work full of details and no idea at all. It’s the old discussion about who’s artist and who is artisan. Sometimes people just want to relax, do something for fun, to escape from the pressure of real life or whatever. I think this is the case here. Rick is probably trying to enjoy himself, do this work for fun and learn new techniques that he can use in his next works. You should show some of your work too, so we can all make comments on it. Would be a nice exercise to share your stuff with us, as everybody else does here.
Interesting to read all your “7” comments on this forum.

“What is more scary is that you are a well known artist in the movie industry.”
abuminalis. I realize that you may be trying to buck some of the Rick Baker/Monstermaker love here. Hell, critiques in the right never hurt anyone. You seem to be dumbfounded that a pro in the “Biz” isn’t producing a movie model right before your eyes on this forum.
Keep this in mind…Rick Baker is an incredibly respected artist that has a portfolio that would make ANYONE on ANY OF THE CG FORUMS ABSOLUTELY SHRINK IN AWE. Believe that!
I’ve got a great idea…in your 9th or 10th post here…instead of being an incredible ass, maybe you should post some of your work eh?
Monstermaker,
Really enjoy that last pic, great composition. The overall shape design , if everything was black and white silhouette’s would make a very interesting and pleasing contour. On top of that you added a very nice painterly feel to the image which enhances the fantasy genre that your depicting.
Though some things could be further stated on a few previous comments probably best to lay that to rest and keep focused on the piece at hand. Hope to see more work from you monstermaker, along with the rest of the artists here that make this place enjoyable.
Beautiful finish, Monstermaker! This is the absolute best rendition of the Cyclops I’ve seen, way beyond the ‘Geometric’ version on my shelf. He looks like he stepped of the screen. Other artists I’ve seen attempt this guy have trouble capturing his likeness and they just look ‘Off’. This was a fun thread to follow, Thanks for giving us some of your time. How about the Dragon, next time???
abuminalis: Why don’t you MAKE something? If there was an Academy Award for Zbrush artists, Rick would probably have that on his shelf too. 50.
Rick,he looks great man.Beefy and freaky looking like he should be.I am a powerlifter as well as an artist, and I remember the cyclops when I was a kid.I was like I want to be built like that!(without the ugly face of course, lol). Now I am huge(no roids, natural).Though actually,he is kind of handsome for a cyclops.I always thought he had a cool nose.LOL.I love Ray’s work.My parents inspired me to become an artist, and when I saw Ray’s movies, they only cemented what my parents encouraged.
Nice one Rick, looking good at the finish.
I can understand some of what abuminalis was saying - that if you wanted to make it look real, you could use SSS, make the skin slightly shiny etc…, but I think as it’s something that you’re doing as a hobby, you’re doing pretty well (I only wish I could do as well!).
Sure, if you were going to use this in a new version of RH’s film, then it would probably be different.
I love the composition, and it’s a great tribute to RH.
Jit.
Love it! It has a cool painterly feel. HH would be proud.
BTW- I love the internet and forums like these, but sometimes I dont. People need to show the same respect for people while posting like they were sitting in the room with them. Some folks just dont understand manners.
Take it easy man!
Greg
really good job on the cyclops
abuminalis- did you notice it only took him a week to do this? a week. incredible.
brings back some very nice memories
thanks for sharing
Top Row, Monstermaker!
50.
i love most of Ricks works, but this is not a top row one imo this one is clearlly for fun, and i have seen many better ones that didnt get in the top row, and didnt had that good rating. I get the feeling ppl are rating his previos works in this thread, not this one
anyway, nice job in recreating that old monster ;]
Beautiful
Sounds like some jealousy on this thread~lol.Your work is apprieciated by me a great deal, though I agree about the bg being a little out of sink in quality.
Your models make ppl like me just stay up all night trying .Well deserved TopRow display.
cal
Yup sure does sound that way. Of course if anyone else did this, total excitement would reign. Hahaha, the curse of having a long career behind oneself. The Top Row is marketing and justifiably so for Pixologic.
MonsterMaker, you did good man. I know many people here love this one, 50sKID and I have special places deep down for this kinda stuff! Long live the homage work of the classics!
