Dustin Brown Sketchbook

Nice work Dustin!!! I loved everything!

Your work is top notch. I’m digging your Tom Waits bust. I could tell it was him immediately. Very very nice.

You have some really nice work Dustin, really nice work. Quite an inspiration for me, someone who is just entering the world of 3D art.

Thanks for the kind words guys. I’ve posed Aang, rock bending. Posing is pretty new territory for me. I tried to make sure his pose had a good sense of rhythm. Let me know if I failed.

After I sculpt the big rock I plan on adding bits of rock flying out of the ground with motion blur, maybe some dust. Should look cool.

Looks cool,

I think his right hand is a bit too relaxed, probably his finger tips would be together a bit more tightly with the thumb pressing between the middle and ring finger. I should have a picture of it somewhere, my teacher does it all the time.

I’m guessing, judging by the pose that his opponent is either at his right, in which case he would be looking to his right, not into the camera (always look at where you’re going to strike), or that he’s anticipating to strike to his left. The difference is that if this is an in-between move to strike the other way it’s ok, if not, i guess his right leg could be a tadd more horizontal, which would also pull his left leg back a bit (the position is correct though, just make sure its’s straight) He would also be standing more square with his hips and shoulders, or at least his chest would be twisted more to the right. His neck looks kinda crooked  hahha

Personally i think his head needs a bit more tweaking, to me his face doesn’t look like aahn’s. His mouth is still kinda awkward and the temple area also looks kinda strange imo. Cheers! :stuck_out_tongue:

Very cool pose and also a very cool model, I definately agree with the critiques that oshiroii mentioned.

It’ll look more like Aang once textured with the blue arrow tattoos, which I can’t wait to see your rendition of.

Good job. His face could use some use of the flatten brush imo.

I think you got a nice pose so far, I would only tweak the characters right hand (our left) Its fine as is depending on the mood your going for. This to me reads as if he is calm, comfortable, and just practicing his powers. If you wanted to add more intensity, I would make the hand a bit more rigid around the first knuckles, and the bend the fingers a bit less.

If you were going for the calm, relaxed practice mode its great as is.

Thanks for the great feedback guys. I’ll work on the hands and I’ll square his pose up a little to make him look more grounded.

oshiroii, you seem to know something about martial arts. Any idea what style this pose is indicative of? Aikido, perhaps? I’m looking for reference images.

Hey Dustin, I’m not entirely sure, but according to wikipedia it seems to be Hung Ga, since it’s an earthbending pose. check out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pai_Sho#Fighting_styles

I’m not familiar with Hung Ga though, I’ve actually started doing shaolin kung fu since a couple of months ago, so I judged based on that experience.

If you can’t find proper photo’s on google I could email my teacher, he’s probably got a couple of cool ones, or just do a quick paint over, just lemme know

Really cool updates! Keep it up :+1:

oshiroii, thanks for the link, that’s great!

Captain Sensible, thanks man.

I finally bit the bullet and bought Headus UVLayout. Up to this point I’ve been using 3ds Max 2009’s UV tools, but they have always felt a bit lacking as far as modern UV tools go.

Headus is extremely hotkey-driven, so if you get it be prepared to memorize a butt load of hotkeys. It’s pretty easy to learn though and it has a slew of fantastic UV tools. Compared to doing UVs in Max, it’s like night and day, I’m very happy with it. Here are some shots of an unwrap I did in Headus.

[]headus02.jpg

I’ve heard about Headus, looks good. For what i know Gnomon uses it a lot, shame I never actually took the time to get into it hehe. Do you recon it’s more for organic shapes or would it also speed up industrial stuff like buildings, vehicles, etc? Right now it takes me forever unwrapping boats in Max haha

Headus is definitely geard more toward unwrapping organic surfaces.

On a different note I thought it might be fun to record a timelapse. Still lots of work to do, I’m going to try to post a final by Friday.

Very nice work Dustin. :+1:

Are you using the DamStandard (Damien Standard) brush when you make those deep cuts? I saw you used flatten and i think some clay or clay tubes in there. Curious to know how you were getting the nice sharp grooves.

Yep, damian standard brush is a big help for slits, creases, and edges. It’s interesting to watch yourself work, after the fact. It’s like a football player reviewing his games on tape, I can see all sorts of inefficient strokes and bad shape choices being made. I tend to work with too small a brush size, which makes things take longer. These recordings may be a good tool for critiquing my own work though, so that’s good.

Still not done, still shooting for Friday…maybe Saturday. Happy with the way it’s turning out. Rockin the Prince of Persia/Borderlands outlines today for fun.

Hope everyone who went to Siggraph had a great time…the interwebs have been eerily quiet about it this year, I guess cause it’s not in LA and because everyone who went is getting faded on Bourbon Street. Good times.

I’m doing my best to avoid the temptation to play with PaintStop. Must … focus … on sculpting.

I like how the legs turned out, very good work. I often find i get caught up in trying to define the different muscles and end up taking it too far. You have a nice blend of form and detail. Looking forward to seeing the finished piece.

I’ve been in Ohio, visiting family for the last week, so I haven’t had much time to work. Thought I’d take this as an opportunity to share some of the websites that I visit daily for inspiration. Enjoy!

Got this guy rendered out in Max finally. Having some seam issues with the color map, but I’ll get that figured out, it’s probably some dumb oversight on my part.
