Announcing ZBrushCore

I’m right now using Core (my first time using ZBrush) and enjoying it! Quick question, though:

The ZBrushCore website mentions that there are no automatic retopology tools in Core. But, I can’t seem to find any manual retopology tools in Core either, such as remeshing with zspheres, or even projecting meshes onto other meshes. Are there no retopology tools of any kind in Core? Or am I missing something? (I’m new to ZBrush, so it’s very possible that I’m missing something.)

ZBrushCore doesn’t have retopology functionality. Thanks!

I was missing that too, no way to fill holes. Also the visibility menu is completely missing. With the trial I was just getting accustomed to using it to create poly-groups and use edge loop to create nice topologies :frowning:

My hope is that they will slowly but surely add little features in to make the core version usable for all sorts of scenarios. It seems the focus is 3d printing (fine by me), but for indie game developers there might not be enough functionality.

Quick question, is there a way to start the program maximized with the windows taskbar visible? I don’t like to work full-screen and manually resizing the windows to be maximized-ish is a hassle.

To have the taskbar visible all the time, you need to resize the ZBrushCore window. Just click the button to resize it, then drag the corners and position it how you want it. Press Ctrl+Shift+I when done to save the configuration, which will include the changed position. I personally never mess with that. It’s so easy just to press the Windows key on my keyboard when I want to see the taskbar and I prefer having the extra real estate for my ZBrushing.

Perhaps a little silly request … I have both the full version and the core (for teaching) now on my computer, docked on the side. It would be nice if the Logo of each app had a different color (or different material look)

Going to explore this Core soon … I also have the feel that ZRemesh and Projection would be a nice addition, although I am very much aware that a ‘beautiful’ mesh isn’t essential for 3D printing (the focus of the Core).

Thank you Pixo-team for this tool! I’ll put it to good use …

I just want to say Thank You for such a nice application and the very good learning tutorials. However, i have one question about Vertex Colors export and re-import from .obj files. I can load the exported .obj’s with Vertex colors from ZBrushCore into other 3D apps and the colors show up just fine. When re-importing an .obj file back into ZBrushCore the colors are gone. Is this a bug or missing feature, with the .obj parser?

Best regards
Stefan

I wonder if they intend to let you buy modular upgrades later to fit needs like a “retopology module” that includes zremesher, etc. The Core name implies that it’s a base to build on, imo. It would be nice to be able to build up to the full zbrush over time rather than having to drop 650 all at once.

Hi Stefan,

Only Obj files from ZBrush contain vertex color data, but most other 3D tools don’t export vertex colors when exporting to Obj. In ZBrush I use FBX for importing meshes with vertex colors, using the FBX Import / Export ZPlugin, but I don’t know if that’s a part of ZBrushCore.

Excellent idea! :+1:

Will zbrushcore have it’s separate forum, like sculptris?

Thank you MetinSeven for your reply!

ZBrushCore supports .obj and MA as import format, according to their page. Good to know that the .fbx format in ZBrush allows import of Vertex Colors. I will have to save then for the upgrade and buy it next year.

Stefan

You’re welcome Stefan! Have fun with ZBrushCore.

Thanks MetinSeven, i will have fun with ZBrushCore!

Stefan

i went over the 10 getting started tutorials. Great job Paul! (If you are reading this).
Everything so far makes total sense. It makes me want to get the full version but i don’t
want to jump too soon. I didn’t realized that Retopo is used for hard surface modeling . I thought
you just retopoed for animation purposes (less polys). Anyway, have a ways to go.

I’m really liking the less cluttered zbcore ui. If there’s one thing I could wish for is to have some clipping brushes to flatten area. I keep using the polish brush and it takes very very very long to make stuff flat.

I’m not a ZBrush user. I own 3DCoat and Sculptris. The price of ZBCore is tempting. However I can not find a trial of ZBCore to see if it’s for me. I can only find demos of the full version of ZBrush.

And YES, I did watch your videos of ZBCore.

Is a demo or trial available for ZBCore?

Thanks kindly…

+1 to Vegeta’s clipping brush request. Using polish to do hard surface work is slow business. Also being able to add edge loops would be incredibly helpful when starting out.

Overall I’ve been surprised-- I’m using it at work and there are a bunch of features in Core that are making it indispensable even with all that’s missing.

Is a demo or trial available for ZBCore?

Nope!

If there is NO demo or trial, how is a non-ZBrush user (I use 3DCoat, Sculptris, 3DCurvy, Silo3D, Hexagon, Wings3D) supposed to know whether or not ZBCore is for them. Hard to decide without hands on experience of the app.

And YES, I’ve watched the videos…I’ve watched the new Chevy Camaro videos too, but without a test drive I would not consider buying a car…

Since 90% of the entertainment industry all use zbrush in some capacit, it’s kind of a no brainer to me. It’s a cheap way to start learninghow to use the most popular tool out there.

(And I bought it once, returned it after a few befuddled weeks, and then a year and a half later rebought it.)

There just isn’t anything else that compares to zbrush for so many workflows.

Glad to hear you enjoy ZBrush. But I would like to try ZBrushCore myself and see if it adds anything to the tools I already own. I’ve heard arguments both pro & con of 3DCoat vs the full ZBrush. I take these arguments with a pitch of salt as I know people have their biases.

In the old day we had Camaro vs Mustang, Charger vs Chevelle, Cuda vs AMX. The arguments were always influenced by the car you were owning/driving at the time…

Cheers

I’m not sure if this has been mentioned before ,I can’t understand why Sculptris has GoZ but ZBrushCore does not.
