3D Connexion & ZB...

I’ve just downloaded a copy of ZBrush for eval. Love it. It’s just missing support for my SpaceNavigator which I find indespensible in 3dsMax.

I contacted 3dconnexion and Pixologic can download an SDK from:

http://www.3dconnexion.com/service/software-developer.html

and integrate support for ZBrush.

Hoping.

There was a post a few weeks ago that insinuated pixologic was working with 3dconnexion, or visa versa… has to be for zbrush.

I sure hope that’s true. I use 3DMax’s paint deformation with the space mouse all the time and Poser’s morph creation brush too. Both of these functions mimic what could be done if ZBrush got with the 21st century. I avoid ZBrush because it doesn’t support the space mouse. If It can be done with an app that supports the space mouse I’ll go that way.

True based on 3DConnexion’s Twitter post on February 2:

@ChillWillGrphx We are making progress with Zbrush support. For Modo you can help us by telling @Luxology you want support for our 3D mice. 1:53 AM Feb 2nd from HootSuite in reply to ChillWillGrphx

Can’t wait.

All I can suggest is that any doubters spend 10 minutes sculpting in demo 3DCoat with a SpaceNavigator. It literally feels like fine sculpting for real, where you’re holding the object in your left hand, and sculpting tool in your right hand. That’s the kind of precision of movement/rotation you have once you get used to it, and once you do, you won’t want to do without it.

Everyone’s a bit wobbly at first, but once you get your left hand used to the movements of the device (and adjust sensitivity as needed), you’ll be surprised at how precise you get, it’s very much like holding the object in your hand.

I really, really hope Pixologic is adding support for 3DConnexion’s devices, they greatly enhance 3D (really 6DOF) object control.

Damn! I’m just SO happy to hear this. I’ve started using a SpaceNavigator at work and I’m hooked, I feel handicaped without it now, and I’m planning to buy myself one, ZBrush support was the only thing missing, I’m sure it’ll make navigating much smoother.

Perhaps a silly question but I assume this ChillWill fellow is in fact associated with 3DConnexion?

I too eagerly await being able to use my SPP in Zbrush!!

+1 I would REALLY enjoy using my Space Navigator on OSX Z Brush

erm, no… that’s not how twitter work. the chillwill guy is whoever 3dconnexion is talking to, so he likely asked a question about zbrush and modo support, and this was their response.

Ah, thank you. Yeah, I don’t follow any Twitters so I’m not really up to date on the protocols.

Guys, I would strongly recommend to you all to submit some tickets directly to Pixologic (Service center) and demand support for 3dconnexion-devices.

I already did this yesterday and Pixo’s current answer is that they think that almost nobody demands it, so they will not care about adapting a 3dconnexion-driver-compatibility into ZB in the next future.

The more demands it directly to Pixologic, the better our chances that one of the programers will spent some hours and write some code.

We only need the basics implemented (Rotation, Pan, Zoom), all other button-related things can be done by each one individually.

I got a SpacePilot Pro since only 3 days and I cannot believe that I could have previously worked without it.

3dconnexio-support within ZB is a must.
Who else if not ZBrush is predestinated for this kind of device ?

Ticket sent. :+1:

Yeah me three.

Such support is already on the list of things that the development team would like to be able to provide in the future. However, at present they are focused on new features that will benefit about 90% or more of our users. They cannot currently justify taking time away from such features to implement one that would benefit less than 1% of users.

But please be assured that it is on the list of ideas for the future.

Please do NOT inundate Support with requests for this. The development team has already read this thread and is well aware of your requests.

Thanks.

Thanks a lot for your hard work at pixologic. I am a 3d connexion user and I can’t live without it, with a mouse my wrist hurt. I hope more people know about the spacepilot (only 1% zbrush users is pety small) cause it’s also a time saver since you can use a tool while navigating a the same time.

Thanks, but really? Pixologic would get a whole lot more customers with the support. Connexion Sales would go up too. It feels silly to zbrush with out it.

Im sure you said the same thing about pressure sensitivity with wacom ??
But now it is a standard.

What pisses me off is the time spent on making zbrush an animation program… it is not. I love the new features, but really you dont even have painting layers lol… and its a texturing/modeling program

Sorry to sound rude, I am a little irritated.

Yep, it seems they don’t understand why less than 1% of zBrush users work with a space mouse. Here’s a clue, if zbrush supported 3Dconnexion that number would get a lot bigger.

FWIW rasamaya, I completely agree.

The 3dconnexion mouse is such a natural thing for zbrush to have, and anyone whose used it in a 3d environment would see why it’s a complement to a 3d sculpting environment. I don’t understand the “well, nobody’s asking for it” logic either. (I have mine set up so that in photoshop, rotation is brush size… that would be great to have in zbrush.)

re: the priority of adding animation

Yeah, I don’t get it either. There are plenty of programs which do animation more effectively, and competing head to head doesn’t make sense. Hey: how about letting me paint on multiple texture channels (bump / spec / emission)? How about easier and exportable rigging and posing tools? How about shaders so I can have a more unified object pipeline? How about making retopo more user friendly?

Big props to pixologic for this great tool (and sorry to be so crankers) but I don’t understand the expressed priorities.

I agree 100%. I’d like to see layers, painting multiple things like displacement and color at the same, time, and of course, 3d space navigator FAR more then animation… odds are, I might play with it, but I already have powerful animation tools, and don;t want something that just has some limited animation features tacked on.

I´ve tried 3D-Coat with the SpacePilot Pro and it works fantastic! Pure feeling in creation. I would love to see zbrush working with SPP - also the 64 bit version of ZB!
