Zbrush At Siggraph - From My Perspective - Day 12

Three words:

when…it’s…done.

Works beautifully for ID Software, glad to see Pixologic is not playing the release date game anymore, it’s a no-win prospect. I’m just going to keep honing ZB skills until the release. :sunglasses:

And keep those videos coming, and thanks!!

:sunglasses: videos - thanks Pixologic team.

BTW did the vr suit with interface for ZBrush 2.5 get released at the show:D

The rumor to why ZBrush 2.5 has not been released yet is that someone on the team brought a dvd in of a movie to watch during the late night work - I think the movie was “Are We There Yet” anyway they took a break and started playing the movie and when the first dialogue of “Are We There Yet” they got caught in a time loop. It is also roumered that Ofer is working hard to get then out of the time loop while the rest are looking for earplugs they had the sound up pretty high:D

The point is not when a program is released.

Nor is it whether or not dates are met, I’ve written enough applications to know that they are never met.

The real point, and my real complaint is the lack of communication. I repeat what I wrote earlier, the lack of any communication seriously led me to think that the company had ceased trading.

Silo has failed to meet its deadlines, Modo 201 was late. These were acepted more or less happily, because they kept and still keep their customers informed. Pixologic has treated its customers with a high level of contempt and might I add some measure of arrogance.

We are not children to be told ‘It’ll be ready when its ready’. We know that, but what is happening? In general terms what are you up to? Is there a reason for the hold up that we could be told about? Or even is there a reason for the hold up that you can’t tell us about?

And finally of course. Are you still alive?

Regards,
Bernard D

I think that it is pretty easy to infer that the delay is for reasons they choose not to tell us about.

Added to which, a lot of people tend to forget that there have been some amazing plugin releases [remember ZAppLink? remember ZMapper?] over the last year. To me at least, that would indicate that the team is a) still alive; b) trying to address the concerns of their customers.

But hey, who was it said ‘you can’t please all the people all of the time’ ?

mmmm…i was hoping videos for the day 3

and also some info if zbrush 2.5 will actually have a REAL perpective camera with FOV control…i know…i know…i have asked that a thousand times…but for me it is important to have a real perpective camera while your sculpting

Ryan,

Have their been any new features or enhancements to the Rigging tools.

Videos if so.

The one sure thing Pixologic did right was hire Ryan Kingslien.

I am casting my vote for Ryan president of Pixologic. :stuck_out_tongue:

No more vids??? – :frowning: we want to see the layers in action… and perspective in too …

PD: i wonder if layers will work on textures too… )

That is unfortunate, yes.

That was not the case here, but you either missed all the commotion or are choosing to misread it.

Pixologic tried to keep their customers informed, but there were already rifts in the userbase, and factions formed to campaign for their priorities. Delays were politicized, not accepted (happily or otherwise). This was also true of the plugin releases (delayed or not), and for a time, every post Aurick or Ryan made in any capacity opened the door for that.

Here’s the deal…

Mac users felt slighted because they had to wait so long for their 2.0 port, and wanted assurance this would not be the case with 2.5. A small but vocal group of PC users were indignant, and basically wanted the Mac version cancelled or handed off to a third party if there was any possibility it’s continued development would slow down the PC release. And every time Pixologic showed it’s face, the users would demand to know whose side they were on, and throw rocks at each other to provoke a reaction.

The community couldn’t heal while we were ripping open old wounds, so Pixologic stopped facilitating that.

And to their credit, things did get better.

That’s one interpretation. There are others as well, some even less flattering. I’d respond to any one of them by calmly explaining that we forced their hand.

We earned this.

I’m afraid we are, and we’ve proved this time and time again.

Maybe you weren’t involved. It’s a shame that the few spoil it for the many, but it’s also the reality we live with.

Wow. I’m sorry. Did you not notice there are videos in this thread? They’re up at the top. Dead people don’t generally record those.

Read between the lines, and not just the stuff you can take personally.

They’ve clearly taken development in a new direction since last year, integrating the toolset towards a coherent whole (as opposed to a collection of brilliant but disjunct workarounds). Going 64 bit is no small thing either, given how intensely optimized the code was (and had to be) for one set of processors. Those are all core architectural changes one would have expected from Verison 3, since they can’t be slapped in as plugins. It seems they weren’t satisfied with 2.5, scrapped the whole thing, and are instead handing us 3.0 under the same heading.

That’s what they’re up to.

My guess is the decision to go that route happened shortly after, and because of, the decision to go silent. Once they had room to breathe, it became evident that this was necessary.

You know as well as I do that if they had announced the plan, we would have rioted in the streets. We would have forced them at gunpoint to release what they had a year ago. And then to support it. What we’re seeing in these videos would never have happened.

Further, what we’re seeing in these videos represents love, not contempt. It could have gone the other way; they could have cashed out and gone home. Or met their minimum obligation then and be charging full price for this update. But they didn’t. And as frustrating as it’s been, this is ultimately to our benefit.

What we see in these videos is a labor of love; if not for the users, then despite them.

Anyway… They’re communicating right now. Accept the gesture, and hope it continues.

I’m sure it’s killing Ofer that he doesn’t get to show off in here anymore. He used to, you know. Pixologic was famous for it’s close interaction with the community. And while I don’t want to sound ungrateful for the intense level of documentation provided in the wiki, pipeline guides, etc., there was something quite powerful in sharing an occasional glimpse of the big guy’s vision, and his presence here is sorely missed.

Perhaps that can resume once the new version is behind us. But if you get nothing else from this message, please understand that stirring up pressure to change their policies can only demonstrate that it isn’t time yet.

Ctrl Z please stop responding to the release date issue.

It is a dead issue.
All you are doing is throwing more gas on the fire. They are going to respond and you know it and the debate will continue forever. You have made your point clearly and I have made mine. Lets move on and talk about Z2.5 and it’s new features.

…damn Ctrl-Z, that post sounds like the making of a new movie!
i had no idea of all the “behind the scenes” at pixologic.
thanks for the history.
…now where’s my rock? i’ve got some Mac users to find…:stuck_out_tongue:

Very exciting, even from what you shown so far I can imagine all sorts of exciting creative possibilities.

However it’ll probably take me two years to get around to learning how to implement them.

Bravo to you all.

‘Zbrush At Siggraph - From My Perspective - Day 3’

Am I missing something? I don’t see any extra info, and I was hoping for some more demo vid’s!? :open_mouth:

Is the “big guy” pixolator? I haven’t seen him post recently.

Ryan has been updating his initial post (on the first page):

"We are having internet problems at the hotel I am in so I can not get a new movie to you but it should be fixed by tomorrow. We will see.

Best,

Ryan"

based on Ryan’s previous habits, I’d say he will pop in 4-5 hours from now. lets hope he brings candy this time

yes, my guess is he’s been chained to the computer this past year.

Excellent job and congratulations to all at Pixologic team! These features are unbelievable. Can’t wait:+1:

Geez Ryan, how hard can it be to find a starbucks and use their wireless?

There’s a difference between beating a dead horse and putting things in their proper perspective for those who weren’t here at the time. If they didn’t see this go down, of course they’re confused and upset. It’s worth addressing.

Responding isn't bad. I'm hoping for an honest emotional response, myself. Something along the lines of <i>"My god." </i>or<i> "I had no idea." </i>But we'll get what we get. Healing takes time, and we can't shy away from it. They won't retaliate, because it wasn't an attack. Nor will they argue, because there's nothing to debate -- what's done is done. It <i>is </i>a dead issue. But the feelings surrounding it aren't, and shouldn't be treated that way. Believe me, I've poured plenty of gas on this fire in the past. That's not what I'm doing now.

Lets move on and talk about Z2.5 and it’s new features.
If we must.

Ryan tried to post videos last night, but there was a problem with his internet connection. He said he’ll try again later today (see top post in this thread).

Note that he's working all day on the show floor. It's exhausting. Don't think for a moment that anyone would have the mental or physical capacity to record and compile these videos while Siggraph is in progress. These must be pre-recorded, already edited, and the order they'll be released in is already planned out. <i>(And thank god for that, 'cause they'd be a mess otherwise.)</i> Meanwhile, we're <b>not</b> going to see every new feature in action because there's still a need for secrecy until it's released. If what you want to see happens to be covered, that's a nice bonus, but.. <i>we'll get what was carefully selected for us before you asked, when they're able to post it. :p </i>I hope that didn't come across harshly. I do get where you're coming from. I'm frantic for more "layers" info myself. Less so in a texturing capacity, though -- <i>"does it do stuff we've seen in other programs?" </i>doesn't engage me, but the 3D capabilities are a wide-open playground of new ideas. Sadly, I fear my imagination's got the best of me on that one. I don't expect my theories will play out this time around, and I don't want to share that disappointment by spreading the ideas if I'm wrong. So, we'll just leave it at <i>"Man, those new 3D layers have some exciting possibilities!" ------ </i> On an interesting side note, just based on the videos so far, <i>how crazy is that artwork gonna be on the top row? </i>And <i>how much further can the training DVDs go this next generation?</i> They've been pretty incredible without these new tools. Imagine what's just around the corner...

LOL Boozy.
