This has come up many times within this thread. In fact, look just two posts above yours! You need to use Acrobat Reader to open the file. Anything else, and it thinks you’re trying to edit it, which then requires a password.
thank you very very much…
Hello, first off, great tutorial. This should ship with the program! I was experiencing sensory overload facing ZBrush’s interface before I started following along with your guide.
I do have a couple of questions, however. I’m up to the point where I am building the scimitar, and I’m a bit confused by some of the directions. You jump directly into some usage of ZSpheres that haven’t been covered yet, such as on page 214 where you mention moving scaling and rotating ZSpheres… I tried to rotate the bead, and it would only spin along one axis (and not the one I wanted).
A bit later, on pages 216/217, I get completely lost in the area that describes the connector mesh. I get up to the point where I delete the second copy of the hilt-helix, but that just gets me something that looks like the single helix connection (i.e. it tapers to a point before connecting). I don’t understand what is meant by the directions “Now move the ZSphere forming the end of the connecting mesh up into the large ZSphere.” Which ZSphere forms the end of the connecting mesh?
If you (or anyone) could explain this in a bit more detail, it would really help me out! Thanks!
Thanks! First time on Zbrush. Downloading now.
I get a document error when I try to open Chapter1-3.ZBR. I get a thumbnail view when I select the file but when I press Open I get an error message and then Zbrush crashes.
Edit: downloaded it again, now it works.
Hello again. I have been following along with the tutorial, and have reached the point where I am adding a material to the head. I was noticing that the results I was getting weren’t what I expected, so I went back and made sure that all of my settings were EXACTLY as they were shown in the example, and it still looks weird.
The first is the “preview” render, the second is the “best” render. Again, this is done using the exact settings shown in the tutorial. It ends up looking more like a sloppy toon shaded look, not like the material shown in the example.
I’m going to play around a bit with the settings, and try to learn a bit more about how the materials work, but in the meantime does anyone have any idea what I might be doing wrong?
I used to ahve the same prob… though I never tried it again… the problem is with the light setup… its actually light which makes it look good or bad and you neeed a lot of practice with it…
Ok, i just started in Zbrush, actually i just started in 3d art 6 months ago, im 16 and i need to know how to save your Zbrush renders, this is killing, i just cant find a way to save the renders, please help!!!
Render then goto Document > export and save in whatever format you want
Bear in mind zbrush renders at 72dpi

Greetings everyone …
am going page by page as suggested in the guide and am currently working on the idol now …
I have stalled out on page 85 at the instruction line as follows:
The next step is to adjust the material properites to look more like rusted metal…
use the settings shoen to the right …
when i cross over “materials” and i look at the dropdown box i have only
…
Modifiers
[S1] <checked>
[render] black
[curser] greyed
…
i dont see anything to adjust like it shows on the page and i can press on the [S1] key but nothing happens …
any ideas…
thanks
Shadowrunner
Make sure that you have the correct material selected, as specified on the previous page. Different materials have different modifiers.
Ah…
with redoing the tutorial i see that you were correct. i didnt click on the correct material… hehe…
thanks for the reply
Shadowrunner
Greetings again,
I have another question that is related to the guide. I have been working on the problem by myself for the last 4 hours without any success…
im in the the area of “Warrior Part 1- ZSpheres”
in the guide… starting on page 220
I am having problems in the modeling area Using the [Density] adjustments
I can follow the guide till about page 229 when i am being told:
“Rotate to a side view and refine the shape further”
At some point in the refinement process i get a wild deformity to the model if i move from one density setting to another post movement of the vertexes…
my main question is can u move up and down the density settings and make adjustments to the mess at differant settings? Or is it a progressive thing were as you move up the density numbers, you have to make adjustments at that setting from that point on or higher…?
If i missed something obvious, my appologies ahead of time
thanks
Shadowrunner
EDIT:
Ignore this

hi all…just joined and am tryin to download the practical guid havin real probs tryed it 5 times keeps downloading an empty zip file…any ideas…thanks in advance…
That’s a bug in XP. You have to download and save the file. Then open the downloaded file. If you try to open the zip directly in XP it’s empty.
When is the practical guide coming out for ZB3?
