wip (nudity)

Hi Slashpot.

My role in a project like this is something that evolves the deeper you get into the job.

I ended up sourcing the background shots from Corbis…that in itself was a massive challenge as you had to source landscape that fitted with the time zone…correct foliage…and the angle of the shot then dictated the lighting and angle of the rendered creatures. Spending hours looking through thousands of landscapes was how I imagine searching for a Russian internet bride would be…After a while they all look the same and you opt for any.

Some of the pages look weird before graphics etc as you also have consider areas for text .

The inhouse designers at Dorling K are probably the best in the business though.

Pete

Thanks for elaborating a bit more on your workflow. I saw the T-Rex John did -it’s a great sculpt-didn’t knew you supplied the basemesh. I emailed you/left a comment on your on your website.

Just a couple more near finished spreads (minus text etc)

Please, never do it!! You’re soooo good at drawings too!!!

Hey Peter,
More fab work - you’re so lucky (yes i know, you worked hard for it too) making dinosaurs for a living… green with envy.
Lovely stuff as always
H

Oh Yes!!
I was hoping for a Spino! My 5 yo Godson’s very favourite - although he talks an awful lot about Parasaurolophus - but mainly because he’s so pleased about the fact that he can pronounce it!! (Well, sort of… It’s more like “Pawa-swallow-fuss”).
I love the rendering as a fish eater, makes a lot more sense of the long crocodillian snout.

The colours on the ‘big bird’ are magnificent! I guess I (and probably you) would like to see him a bit more scratched and dented, especially being such a vast creature, but I’m betting that’s a DK thing?

But I gotta say, the Piece de Résistance is that magnificent pencil rendering! The Theropod (I’m guesing Trex from the hands?) looks like it was done by Durer! I know plenty of artists who paint well but lack drafting skills, it always shows up, but your drawing skills are just excellent. I bet that like me, you don’t get much time to use a pencil, but I’d love to see more. That is a superb piece of work!

Thanks as always slash.

Gawwwd…that sketch is going back about 5 years now…the hands are wrong. I never sketch as much as i used to…i need to…we all do. Thats why im looking forward to the 3.5 paintstop plug in being released.

DK do go for pristine looking creatures where they can. I can and do illustrate them with a lot more “life”. Big predators should and could have had some bad oral hygene with infections etc from biting through bone. The whole prehistoric party was one of death and poop and its hardly ever ilustrated that way.

Roll on the 3.5 plug ins…

some more WIP from the book.

Great work there…as always
love the sculpts…
Do you use renders from zbrush for the final composite… or do you use any other rendering software ???

Hi Ivar…

Im a z brush purist…I actually cant get my head around most high end render packages. Z brush is enough for me and my clients at the moment.

i really like your work but its so hard to view with them being sooo huge of renders, this is kinda a side note for the moderators of the site, perhaps they should check out the system used at polycount.com that resizes the images to fit the thread better, and allow viewers to enlarge them by simply clicking on them. it works out great over there.

Ministerart: Hey really exceptional dino renders :+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:, really been enjoying your work. Best wishes on all your projects, will be watching for more.

You gotta be kiddin! Pachys AND Paras!!!
My godson will be going nuts when I show him these! These 2 became favourites for him after a ‘safari’ scene in a certain movie you probably never heard of…Part 2. The bit where the Pachy slams the jeep like a rhino and the Para lifts guys off the ground and chucks them about. And like I said, he’s very pleased with himself that he can say their names!

I think you’ve covered most of our faves now! Hmmm? What else? Have ya got an Albertosaur? A fave of mine!

PS, LOVE what you’ve done with the Para head, would it just be skin from the crest to the neck or what? Is this based on something, or your own idea?

Brain snapping stuff mate, keep it up! A little boy will be stoked (and his godson too!)

I just updated my site and heres a wip of a traditional dragon…hope you like. God bless 3.5 version 2

Your work is fantastic, mate!

My only crit would be that, in my humble opinion, that dragon’s neck and head seem a bit to big for it’s body. I think he’s a smidge to forward heavy.

But it’s stilla kick-@ss piece of sculpting.

nice one peter, love the dragon :+1:

good work kepp posting

Geez, about time Pete! You been slacking off?!
Great dragon! Love his expression and worn wings! There’s a wonderful ‘humour’ about his limbs, and I love the way he sits ‘bird-like’ on his back legs.
Did you use the new ZSpheres for this? I would have thought ZSpheres 2 would be perfect for your work, it’d even help space out the scales.

Anyway, more work! It always makes my day to see you’ve got something new!

Just loving the new sketch feature…but I cant stand using the sketch materials…

Oh…and while im on…in preferences…theres a “auto save when zbrush crashes” button…avoid it. It saves crashed models in the recovery folder but disables basic “save” function. Not perfect. Once activated…the only way to save your work is to hope that zbrush crashes.
