PLEASE, watch high resolution and not compressed image (which is more than 4k) if you want to see all the details like peach fuzz on her belly or cheeks, little sparks, fireflies etc. The link is below in the signature, leading to my DA page.

Warning, mature content. It is not a first time when mature filter doesn’t work here. Can it be due to the fact I’m using Opera browser which is quite outdated and abandoned? Reply with Quote button doesn’t work either

Finally I’ve finished this pic. Took me a while to sculpt, render and compose all this stuff together. I started this project as animal (horse) anatomy practice, then I saw a picture of very cure girl and I thought it would be nice to make a likeness sculpt. And in the end I decided to change her facial features a litle bit and make a centaur. To be honest I never felt satisfied with this pose and it was made just for practice. I had totally different pose for the final render in my mind (I wanted to show her sleeping in the forest). Anyways, since I had this pose I thought it would be cool to render her with mental ray. I was bored already with monochrome or gradient backgrounds so I decided to make something more interesting. But I wasn’t expecting it would take so long. So my apologies for those who was waiting for the final image. Despite all this months there are still nothing special in it and I believe that overall it could be done in a few weeks (rathere than months, lol). But you know how this happens: you start learning new topic, resolving troubles, testing it and in the end complitely forgetting about the primary target. So I want to summarize what I’ve learned during this period.

  • I’m much more familiar with female and animal anatomies (I did some forest creatures too, but didn’t include them here)
  • Fibermesh isn’t so scary right now to me.
  • Learned environment sculpting and texturing
  • Learned paint Effects in Maya (truly awesome stuff).
  • Learned fur system in Maya (this kind of experience I would like to forget)
  • I’m more familiar with smoke and fire simulations in Blender. Plus expanded my knowledge about particle, fluid and cloth simulations.
  • Learned a lot of cool ways how to optimize and render heavy scene on my crappy old PC (though it partially fried just recently)
  • Skin shader is still far from being perfect but now I’m more comfortable with it.
  • Upped my painting skills from total zero to 0.1
  • And a lot of other useful information.

So yeah, almost everything here is 3D. Modeled in Blender and sculpted in Zbrush. UV’s were unwrapped mostly in Maya and UVlayout and rendered with mental ray. Composed in Photoshop. Campfire was rendered in Blender. The Moon was rendered in Zbrush with BPR. I also did volumetric clouds but in the end decided to paint them with brushes. My intention was to make very bright, colorful and fairy image. And I wasn’t striving for realism. Hence I intentionally didn’t include things like Atmospheric perspective, proper DoF and exposure in relation to my camera’s settings and lens.
The story behind the render. I wanted to show very nice and fairy place, something like a village where Centaur creatures are resting from the big city. It’s some kind of carnival or holiday dedicated to fire, when the streets are decorated by the red flags and lanterns, there are a lot of candles and campfires. This girl, tired by a big loud company decided to take a rest and invites a viewer to follow her. Everything is so illuminated and loud, so she wants to go into the dark forest. Seeing hesitations in viewer’s eyes she says that it would be funny and you shouldn’t be afraid. To make it even more intriguing, she takes her clothing off, looking at you with interest (as in the render), smiles and goes to forest.

PS This bulges in the bottom of her torso are just modified bellies of the rectus abdominis, connected to the expanded sternum (actually manubrium) of the horse (result of my speculative anatomy for centaurs). I did it mainly as a joke to tease a viewer. It is NOT genitals. I’m typing this note almost under every image, however I still often hear complaints like “Come on, dude, centaurs don’t have things like this”. To be honest this is really annoying. Centaurs are fantasy creatures and there are no rules or anatomy books telling us how they should look like. This is just my vision. And I like to break stereotypes. So please, don’t make me hear in 101 time that I should erase this thing. I actually love it  I have perverted mind, I know.

PPS Big thanks to all who was waiting and encouraging me. It means a lot. Special thanks to Jacub for being super patient and checking all my endless WIP images. I hope I wasn’t very annoying with them :D.

Hey man wassup??? How you doin’? Super glad you came back:D.fantastic work.still one of the best skin shaders that I’ve ever seen.also Love the compositing.keep up the great work. :+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1::wink:

Thanks a lot  I’m fine and really happy that I finished this piece. Though I might come back and do several tweaks but for the most part it is done. Interesting, I thought that the composition is one of the weakest points in this pic (mainly because it was hard to chose between full height shot vs more close-up and portrait like orientation). Yeah, after this project skin shading isn’t such a big mystery as it was before.
Thanks again and I hope you are doing well too

the hardest part is knowing just an illustration, there is always something to improve, for my good work congratulations:

Thank you, I appreciate your words!

Very very nice work!!! Just one thing that throws me off, why’d you leave the vaginal mound? Just seems like it wouldn’t/shouldn’t work.

Thanks for commenting! And about your question - please, read the post scriptum in the end of image description.

Beautiful

My post saying beautiful was supposed to include a quote to what I was referring to, it was an earlier image you upped showing off her beautiful anatomy.
My apologies for the vaginal comment, I was so captivated by the entire render that I forgot to finish reading. Definitely makes a lot of sense now! And now I have learned this began in Blender? INCREDIBLE TO THE MAX!!! Just picked up Blender now that the interface is no longer a total turn off, can’t wait to dive in! What did you do to get started in both ZBrush and Blender? I’m a total newb minus 5 years of experience in 3DsMAX and Maya (my current app of choice, hoping Blender can replace it as I really don’t want to pay for upgrades anymore)
cheers! I can’t wait to see more, very inspiring work!

It is OK :). I like to see people reaction on this bulges. And when I wrote that sometimes it can be annoying I’ve meant when people suggesting me to erase it and conform to stereotypical images of centaurs.
Yes, Blender is awesome. And free! It is sad to see what Autodesk does to packages it bought. It almost stops the progress and simply makes a lot of money by selling new versions of Maya or Max with minor additions.
I was learning Blender by trial and errors method. Just practicing every day, learning about good topology solutions, modeling rules etc… you know all this stuff is common to every 3D modeling package. The only difference is that now Blender has very powerful and intuitive tools for modeling. Especially the mouse gestures and hotkeys - they are so nicely done and straightforward. They lead to very nice workflow, based purely on key combinations and if you learn them all (at least for modeling) you will need no UI at all (personally I’m working without UI, just maximized 3D view).

There are many cool sites where you can find good tutorials. The Blender Cookie is probably the most known.

And when it comes to learning Zbrush - I started with excellent tutorial from Eat3D with Michael Pavlovich (he is working on ZBC right now). But to be honest my Zbrush skills are limited by sculpting organic forms. I’m still a noob when it comes to doing hard surface in Zbrush and I prefer to do it in Blender instead

Thank you and happy zbrushing

As i said on DA, and as others here have said, this is a very beautiful piece  Very nicely done.

Thanks again! I hope that my next projects will not take such a big amount of time

I’m really glad to finally see your finished piece! Turned out quite beautifully in fact.
Are you planning on doing more renders of it? Even if they are not fully composited.
I look forward to seeing more of your work!

Totally worth all the time spent on it, man! Loved it! She beautiful and both human and animal anatomy works very well! I will just insist that the whole quadrant (clavicle, menubrium, pectoralis) looks as bit too blended, giving an impression of being too flat/no evident separation between those landmarks (specially on the supra esternum notch)
Pardon me if i made any spelling mistake on those names xD

Keep on the excellent work!

That’s VERY nice to hear about Blender, I do plan on spending PLENTY of time on it -and I should probably use all the defaults instead of the Maya Setup(?).
and you couldn’t be more right about Autodesk! Adobe seems to be following their route too. I still have CS4 on my Windows Machines and CS6 on Mac, don’t plan on upgrading, especially now that I’ve gotten very comfortable with Nuke and Mari.

Thanks man! Yes, I like this character a lot so I will continue making renders with her. Originally I planned to make her sleeping in a forest so maybe next pic would be close to my initial idea. Though I need more powerful PC to render environments quickly. Also, I have a crazy idea to make a regular (human) version of this girl. The reason is - centaurs are quite big and the amount of interesting poses they could take is very limited. But I want to see her sitting on the chair, leaning on the wall, lying on the bed etc… but i really don’t know is it fair to take a finished centaur character and make a human version of it. So yeah, I would like to know what other people think about this idea.

Thank you very much. Yes, I always have some problems with this area. And also I think this is due to the lighting that is very close to being frontal. Overall the amount of shadows on her body is very low, so the lit side (her left) appears a bit flat. Take a look on my previous WIP images of her, especially turnaround with gray material. Does this problem area still present? If so, next time I will definitely introduce some fixes. Thanks

Yes, take a time and learn Blender’s hotkeys and navigation. I tried Maya’s setup once and never come back to it later. The most cool thing is that navigation in Blender is based on two buttons: Shift and Middle Mouse button. It might sound as not very important but it simplifies your life a lot. I remember my shock when I first tried Max - too many manipulations for very simple operation like navigation in the scene. Dunno, maybe this is because I tend to rotate my model a lot to see it from any possible angles
PS I hope to try Nuke and Mari one day. I’ve heard a lot of nice words about this softwares.

Can’t wait to see more! And I’m 100% in for the female version, I’m sure it will be excellent!

Great! Nice to hear people like the idea. When she would be ready as a human it would be interesting also to try her in different settings (sci-fi or fantasy) with different clothing. But now I will take a rest and try something more simple. Maybe pushing up my likeness skills and practicing more on expressions

Just for relaxation.
