A little doodle from one of your meshes
Hi krugerman,
That’s just about weird enough for me.
Seriously – weird is good, love it.

Hi Everyone,
A bit of polyPaint on the previously posted piece.
Perhaps pleasing. Probably preliminary. Possibly plausible. Perfectly playful.

Arguably alliterative. Good job, though!
“Dōmo arigatō, Mr. groBoto!” …Sorry, I just couldn’t resist.
Hi,
the gnarloid is cool.Looks like fun to play with.
Keep going!
EricShawn - Thanks thoroughly.
Webhead - Dōmo arigatō to you too.
Thanks jmeyer,
I love the broad scope and exploratory nature of your Thread Gallery… not unlike where I’ve been wandering over the last few years here.
Here’s a simple exploration – just a few minutes stolen from a hectic day.

Careful Darrel, next thing you know, Autodesk will be buying you out and getting you to work for them. GroBoto is a cool program.
Thanks zber2 - We think we are on to something… will have to wait and see what the rest of the 3DCG world thinks.
Here’s another GroBoto ‘Bot’ based sculpt (OK, only a minute or three spent in ZBrush, these are just flotsam from GroBoto testing – can’t afford to get sucked in to making art right now, as much as I’d love to).
I imagine the real value of this workflow for ZBrush artists might come from ‘harvesting’ nifty little sections of Bot geometry and turning them into various accoutrement for characters, costumes, vehicles, etc.

Never mind Autodesk acquiring groBoto*. Pixologic should snap it up; it’s really becoming an exciting tandem! I kinda suspect Darrel & friends wanna hang on to it, though. Great stuff.
*Besides, it would just end up costing four times as much and be twice as hard to use.
Another sketch based on a GroBoto Head… different primitive structure, and I like the way it responds in ZBrush – curious characters seem to pop up instantly. I settled on this ‘Biff’ direction – hope to revisit him.
I’ll post this to the Who Can it Be Now…? Thread soon.
Meanwhile, here are the GBR, OBJ & ZTL files.

Hi all,
Very preliminary WIP
Mixing GroBoto Bot geometry into my hard-surface/mech exploration.
Usual workflow… GroBoto Modeling, SeamNet OBJ Export, ZBrush Sculpt. This time incorporating GroBoto ‘Bots’ and FlexTools.
Have some ambitous notions for this, but will have to wait awhile… still focused on GroBoto development.

Took me a second to recognize the multiple drill columns & how they would rotate into place as needed.
…this is one where the fine print makes all the difference–but geothermal isn’t going to be much use in the Jovian system except on Io
Hi markkens,
Thanks.
Well… you are seeing more than I (this whole ‘project’ has about an hour invested, and the ‘concept’ was a whimsical afterthought) – but I appreciate, and will gladly pilfer, your fine ideas and observations as I develop the piece.
Yes, I was thinking Jovian Moons – Io, and Ganymede (which has a hot core if my rusty memory serves).
But again, mostly whimsy from a child of the 50’s & 60’s who imagined he would have the opportunity – at this point in life – to blow his savings on a trip to a Mars base (or at least an iconic ‘wheel’ space station). At least I can still dream & invent.
Best Wishes,
Darrel
50’s and 60’s, eh? Sounds like we’re about the same age. Maybe that’s why you can actually write (and spell).
Look forward to seeing your planetary probe develop!
Thanks. Yes… a bit disconcerting to think that 50’s are equivalent to about 1910’s for a lot of the young ZBrushers here… Oh well, it’s a fine mix.
Here’s a quick follow up on the MechSkeeto – just more hasty explorations coming out of GroBoto testing – I know I keep repeating the same lament, but truly… no time.
Nonetheless, I’m very happy with the effects coming from SeamNet mesh Masking… in this case it’s the old Masked Seams > Heavy Smoothing trick I’ve often used. However, a different primitive setup in GroBoto, and just the right seam & mask settings is eliciting some subtle, fascinating forms – well I find them fascinating anyway. Also opens the door to some interesting polygroup manipulation.
When the smoke clears here, I’ll post more Video.

It seems like GroBoto is a version of what ZSketch (ZSpheres) already do…?
It looks interesting, but what are the differences?
I love the the way GroBoto 3 does Boolean, something that has plagued 3D software for a long time now because it never really had good results. It looks like GroBoto is changing that and finally making boolean operations a viable part of 3DCG. I personally haven’t tried the software yet, but it’s not hard to see what it does and how well it does it. Bravo to the GroBoto team.
Hello sadicus,
Thanks fo asking.
Yes, GroBoto can do ZSketch-like things – including very organic forms – but there is a world of difference. Including (but not limited to):
- Many Primitive Geometry types (Sphere, Cone, Ellipsoid, Box, Torus, Crescent & many more).
- Full freedom to combinine those Primitives (simply arranging in any arbitrary way, and/or combining to form custom Boolean geometry)
- Clean Hard Surface Modeling and Meshes.
- High Fidelity, accurate, sophisticated mesh with precise multi-row Seams (edge-loops)
- Various Mesh Smoothing & Stylizing options
…but easier to show than tell… Below are just a few examples (and I’ve excluded the many organic examples in this thread just to focus on the truly different modeling styles possible with GroBoto). Several show clearly how the original Boolean model was constructed, and the automatically generated mesh.

Darrel

Hey zber2,
Thanks very much – we feel the same way, and the potential to leverage booleans, add to that system, and – in many ways transcend it – is unlimited.
We have an embarrassment of ideas – with a little time & a bit of good fortune, you should see them rolling out in the coming months.
Best Wishes,
Darrel
