A video tutorial with narration showing the modeling of a hand? You’re really earning your keep, D. Not sure what I mean by that, but thanks anyhow.

I began reading right side of the brain some time ago, and I had some difficulty following it. Mostly, because I found it difficult to perceive upside-down figures as anything but figures. I may have another go at it though. I think I’d prefer to sketch in Photoshop rather than paper, but that shouldn’t be too big of a problem I don’t think. I just can’t work on a drawn image without having it quickly degenerate into a smudgey mess.
You say you had trouble following the book I mentioned, don’t let that discourage you. It is an excellent book and the author really knows her stuff. It’s supposed to be difficult. You may not realize it but it is the times you spend feeling frustrated like you’re butting your head against a brick wall that you’re actually learning the most.
If you play it safe you will progress excruciatingly slowly, if at all.
Also, don’t be afraid of creating a smudgy mess on paper! The point isn’t to create masterpieces, it’s to learn. You can’t sit at a screen all day, and when you’re not you should be drawing, drawing, drawing - preferably from your surroundings, or failing that, from photography and work by the greats.
I hate sounding preachy, but I realize not everyone has the luxury of attending art school. This is stuff I’ve had to learn slowly, through trial and error, but it helped me immensely on my way.
I’ll have to work my way through the book then. I do disagree that you can’t spend your whole life in front of the computer screen though, that does not match up to my experience.
I draw when I can’t paint in PS, but the smudges aren’t only a hindrance to the finished quality of the drawing, they also make it harder to differentiate my lines and shading from the other mess from failed attempts. Of course, when you don’t have a computer, you have to make do with what you’ve got, and I try to.

I don’t have much to say about this. It’s a head, I wanted to make a return to making human heads. I decided to not include the eyes, I’m still working on making good eyes.
All i can say is that its a bit too wide. other than that, good exercise. Post more.
That was quick. Thanks for the crit. I suppose I could see that.
I’ll probably make a few more heads today. Might even make a study with reference material. That’ll be a challenge.
You certainly are persistent
Defining a region (depression) for the temporal fossa would probably be a good step.

Not persistent enough, I have plenty of time where I’m not sculpting. This is unacceptable.
Your critiqe is interesting, I will have to see about this. I’ll make this change as well as D’s and see how things look.
Here we are:

I probably could have done a little better, but I’m already liking the face better with those changes.
I bought Erklaerbar’s Zbrush Funpack, and used a material included in it along with some of the new brushes and alphas to update my head:

No new work though, I’ve been busy.
good to see you are back at it. these recent faces are an improvement, but they still need a lot of work. the structure of the cheeks in particular is rather off, and the over all proportions are slightly skewed. keep up the progress though, and be sure you are using references.
Thanks for the crit. Good to see you again.
I will indeed be working a great deal for the foreseeable future, but perhaps not for awhile. Right now I’m playing Spore, and I figure that because I’ve been waiting for it fro so long, it warrants a bit of time away from my work. i’ve also been neglecting my other artistic pursuits, painting and traditional modeling, for the sake of Zbrush. While Zbrush is probably my favorite medium, I cannot allow myself to neglect those other areas. Thus, I will probably take a week or so to catch up on my studies there.
How is Spore?
I know im like 3 yrs late lol but i just got Guild Wars. The whole time i was playing i was saying to myself, “No monthly subscription!!!” There are some major differences between WoW and G.W. but not enough to pay 180 bucks a year difference.
I got hooked on it and now i gotta get back to Zbing tonight. You should post some of your traditional paintings and sculptures too!!
Maybe I’ll develop a sculpt from a painted concept sometime, but I gotta focus on Zbrush here.
Spore is cool, you can create just about everything in the game world, from buildings to vehicles to your creature and its clothes. The gameplay itself is decent, but simplistic, so if you’re a hardcore RTS fan, it will be severely lacking in challenge. Once you reach Space stage though, things really pick up and start to get interesting. Overall I recommend it highly.
I think GW is sort of dead now. It was awesome early on, but they made some poor choices that I think really hurt it. I’d still play it over WoW though.
Just been screwing around today, as I said, I’m kind of taking a break, but I couldn’t resist restructuring my recent head to make it a bit more fantastical:

Pretty similar, but a few tweaks here and there.
Hey twitch i did a quick quick mock up. The right side is what i would do and the left is what you have already. The only thing i did that affected both sides was lengthen the top of his head.
Hope it helps!!

Thanks, D. I had a little trouble trying to figure out what you changed, but I think I made some of the same edits, and I think it’s an improvement. The head was too wide to begin with, so I thinned it out, but I don’t think I did it enough (and I think you agree) so I pushed it a little farther. I also lengthened the top of the head like in your mock-up:

HAHAH i guess i should have marked the areas. You basically made most of the edits i proposed. The only thing left would be, if you want, loose the ross perot ears and take them back a bit.
Also the distance from the eye to the tempal <----not sure if i spelled that right, should be a little over 1 eye length. Right now you have it about an eye and a half.
The cheeks could use a little more mass as well.
The mouth, nose and eyes are perfect in their position and distances, its just whats around those parts of the face that need a tad bit more work.
Alright then. I think I can make those edits. Don’t ask me to make good ears, but I can pin them back. That much I can do for you.
This one isn’t that great, even by my standards, but I’m going to Ryan Kinglien’s Zbrush workshop tomorrow, and I didn’t want to be totally out of practice.
