TROGLODYTE WIP (121 welcome)

I am about to proceed to the next stage on this WIP. I had been posting this at CGT but the work has progressed far enough now that I thought I would share it with you. Most all of the modeling on the Trog is done in ZBrush with the exception of the round scaley looking things on his body which were done in C4D. Right now there is no texture…it is all procedural shaders used in C4D. The Shield and Helmet were created in C4D but I am going to take them out of the scene because they look rather incongruous with the feel of the creatre. I will be creating a series of textures using TextureMaster…I will be creating a specular map, diffusion map, bump map, displacement map and possibly an emvironmental map…all of which will be driven in various material channels in C4D. I seem to have a ton of projects these days…I am still working on the Assassin picture and I have been doodling again with my Harpy Project as well as the Murahl Rider picture. I am planning of finishing my War and Peace superhero picture as well…so many projects…so little Mentat to go around…

121 is welcome on this…there are a great many flaws that I am aware of in the structure that need to be addressed but if you have any ideas on enhancements or what you would perhaps like to see then fire away! I am open to ideas.

fantastic rendering and modeling too!!!

I’ve been following this at CGtalk and it does look very good Mentat. I really like the pose he is in atm and the scales on the upper body work well. The color fits him but the material I just can’t agree with, makes him look kind of metallic. I like the shields and they look best in the last pic IMO, but the headgear, although looking cool, cover far to much of his face.

For me, the first thing I pick up when looking at a character pic is the pose, eyes and mouth. So in my book to much emotion is lost via the headgear. Of course you could add his attitude/emotion other ways with the headgear as it is, smoke coming from his nostrils and what have you. But if there was one thing I would change it would be the headgear. That being said the second headgear does look very cool :+1:

I don’t know what else I would put on him, except maybe a harness and a little guy trying to restrain him

Looking forward to seeing him all lighted up and in a scene. :+1:

Thanks TV. Yup…the material is just a poor stand-in until I grt the final textures complete. I agree about the helmet…it will be deleted. Actually this is intended to be a Troglodyte warrior…an Epic level Prestige Class character from my D&D campaign. The armor doesn’t work well…I think I will opt for leather and such…just don’t want to cover up all the details in the face etc.

I agree with tv eyes on the head gear , but it seems you do too :stuck_out_tongue:
then there’s a little thing regarding his feet. I find it hard to see a boundary(dunno if that’s the right word for it) where the toes become nails.
His belly isnt very detailed in contrast with his chest , off course if you’re going to cover him with leather this might not be necessary.
I also watched your thread at cgtalk a while back and it’s already looking fantastic , i’ll be awaiting further updates , if you find the time in between your other projects :stuck_out_tongue:

:grimacing: :grimacing: :+1:

whoa VERY nice job on it so far!!!
I agree with the comments about the helmet, and im sure you will rework it and make it perfect (always do ;))

Ill be following this project real close. Thanks for postin this

Coming along very nicely! I also like him (?) best naked. And I just realised he’s got 6 legs so he must be an insect - how could I not be interested? :+1:  :+1:

dam lonnie this is awesome work… thats a wonderful looking character…that material and lighting seem to go great with your character.

I like ole Trog in his many forms here, but I too like him best in the raw…that animal subhuman terrorist feel to him…the armor would slow him down…he looks like he could just rip your arm outta its socket and hold you with his other arms while beating you to death slowly with your dismembered limb…very way kewl…

hi mentat, nice scary inventention. i like the guy - he has character. in particular i like those lined up round scales. hope you do such or similar also o his lower body. also, maybe you like to add a long “fingernail” at his elbows. i think it would fit the design. and i would do the helmet slightly smaller as not to hide so much of his fantastic head. the helmet is great.

btw, i am just curious, why are you doing this extra torture producing the textures, bumps etc in c4d ?

Cooool image Lonnie !!! :sunglasses:
For 121: is perfect !!! hehehehehe
Well done bro !!! :+1: :+1: :+1:

Maybe an leather helmet will be more appropriate ?
In any case : great modeling

Lonnie, i’m happy to see this “wip”…
Truly amazing.

Hi Kokoro…the main reason I am doing the texturing in ZBrush is because I do not have BodyPaint for C4D and because I am too lazy to try to unwrap the UV map and take it into Photoshop. Also I like the challenge of doing all the textures in ZB…should prove interesting.

I wish we could curse here, because my first reaction to this rhymed with Moly Truckin’ Spit. I think this is my favorite thing I’ve seen you do yet, and not because it was rendered in C4D…the modeling is wonderful. I like him better without the armor, although he still looks great with it. I can’t wait to see how you texture him in ZB. I will be watching for updates on this one.

Whoa! Something more intelligent to say totally escapes me Lonnie. I’ll on the lookout for updates!

I loved the effect made in the eyes. could you show e tell us?

Hi Macord. Actually I have a small tutorial on this located here Monster Eyes If you look closely you will see the eye I used is the last one listed on that page. Cheers.

Excellent modeling Lonnie!
The C4d materials look really goodtoo and the renders you got are very crisp! I like him without the helm as well, His head is really magestic, but I do like the idea of other bits of armor.
Great job,
Michael
