Topology & Flow Lab

After working a little bit with the new topology tools, i tried to create a new topology as described on this site:
http://www.zbrush.info/wiki/index.php/Topology in 1.1
But when i hit the “edit Topology” button, i got a skin (A), with lots of holes in it, and i don’t know why
Does anyone know why this happens and how i can fix this?
Befor hitting the button the skin was ok!

EDIT: the mesh/tool was created in ZBrush 2!

I was really looking forward to the topology tool- Since I build most of my heads from Zshperes, but I found out a trick a while back that eliminated that conical/spider web ring of polys from a starting Ztool.

What you do is you make a Box model. Go to adaptive skin mode in the toolbox, pull the sliders down all the way to 8 and 0.

then clear the BOX object from the document.

Go to tools and select the new box model from the tool bar.

Go to geometry.

Slide the bar from subdivision 2 to subdivision 1 level.

Delete the higher subdivided models history and then slide it back to level one again. Delete the higher made sub levels, again and again till you wind up with a 6 sided polygon box. Divide this 6 poly sided box model- it becomes conical/spherical in shape.

You will never have to deal that odd spiderweb circular polygon area on your Zsculpts again.

Save it after 2 or 3 divide and reuse it whenever you want to sculpt out a head/organic form.

I’ll never use a Zsphere outside of making an eyeball/ round object again.

I can’t wait to check out Z3. I’m still waiting on the replacement part for the PC.

Thanks Mouse-Art for your ansewers.

The question isn’t how to move a vertex, the question is how to move it and have the movement constrained to the surface of the mesh that you are re-topologizing. This functinality, I think, is critical for the tool to be useful. Some apps, I think, call this “snap to surface”.

I’m having real ptoblems with this tool. I managed to get going with the tutorial then had a crash. Since that point when selecting my mesh for re-topologising it only appears in wireframe mode (which makes applying the topology spheres impossible) I too couldn’t find any way of constraining the topology points to the mesh when moving them.

Does anyone know a way of resetting the smooth shader on your target mesh?

Ah ha!
Sorted it!!
The mistake I was making was I was going directly to the topology: select mesh

You need to go to rigging:select mesh first (not very logical but that solves the issue!

Wow, this thread has evolved big time. Many good questions and many good answers. There are a few other threads concerning topology around. I’m going to see if I can bundle all our questions and answers about topology into one single post.

In the meantime, keep posting your experiments, questions and answers!

For me the concept of good flow and topology is still very new and vague, let’s also talk about the non-technical aspects, like:

-how to draw the topology lines? Do you just follow the details in your mesh, like when you have an eyebrow curve, you just draw your topology following that curve?
-I found the Zbrush topology tool very forgiving, I tried to create nice quads, but sometimes there were dead ends or triangles. Is it best to avoid them? (they do create strange effects sometimes)

Cheers,
Plakkie

This is a mini_minitutorial zscript with the basic …

There are no snap functions in ZB, but can’t you just project the new topology onto the original surface once you have finished laying it out?

I’d say that if a zsphere/vertex is so far of the surface of the original model that it would cause problems, it would just be easier to delete and redraw it.

Nice little script Andreseloy!

Question: when you load one of the demo models (Demohead.ztl), and go into the topology mode, is it possible to have the current topology show up before you start editing?
When I go into topomode I have to start drawing lines from scratch…

Hello to all

I`m trying to get to this topology edit

I`m using this instructions

"-Load in your model (must be a polymesh, the standard primitives don’t work)
-Go to Edit mode (T)
-click on the ZSphere button in the Tool menu. Now a Zspere will appear.

  • in the Tool menu two new options have appeared: Rigging, and Topology. In Rigging, press ‘select’ and select your model that you want to edit.
-in Topology select “Edit topology”. Now you can start drawing lines "

But all I get is this

Just turn on the ‘Frame’ button.

Set the subd level first so you get the wireframe view you prefer.

Bonecradle, thanks for replying, but what I meant was:
is there a way to convert the original topology of a model into a Topo-Zsphere structure, so you can edit it a bit instead of having first to draw all the topo-lines?

Yes, I think so. You need to follow the instructions in 1.3 on this page.

You’ll need to export the head as an obj first (and give it a name obviously different from the original).

I was going to reply about this but thought I’d better give it a try first

When I did it, I deleted the higher subd levels before exporting.

I actually got a bit confused by the naming of the tools when it came to having to select them per the instructions, but I did end up with a zsphere wireframe, although it wasn’t overlaid on the original mesh, i.e. the original mesh wasn’t visible. I’ll put this one down to user error.

Thanks Bonecradle. Hmm… quite a complex procedure… I’m not even sure I understand it. I tried it out, but without any good results. Anyone have more luck with this?

Another question: what do the Hide and Bind buttons in the Rigging and Topology menu do?

Plakkie the same as me  I don`t quit follow this

All i want to do is import obj and play with topology of this obj
no other but the same.

All questions and answers from this thread are currently bundled in a list in the first post. Trying to get as much info together as possible, so keep posting and a big thanks for all the smart people testing this new cool topology feature! :+1:

Sorry. How can i run this script? Should i rename it to *.zmv or how?

Plakkie:

Great thread. Thanks a lot!
