Amazing, love your style. I want to do the same type of work, I’m a little rusty, need to practice, haven’t sculpted in years. However sculptris is changing this. you are an inspiration to me.
What do you use to render with, is it zbrush? Because the renderings really show off your modeling.
Great work! Great theme!
thank you nicksc, MouthforWar
I always give some information about what apps I’m using.
BPR for best-preview-renderer (zbrush), Sc for sculptris, cycles is the new blender render engine, 3dc for 3dcoat (retopology). Mostly Zbrush BPR 1-3 passes and combined in Ps (using dof maps as well). More passes when SSS in use. Other, older, more complicated scenes, rendered in blender internal. Cycles gonna be my favorite anyway, though in pre alpha stage.
Do you think that blender would be better or as good as zbrush. I really don’t have the money to buy zbrush. Blender is free and I like the new interface. I don’t really want to learn two software packages? It takes alot of energy to learn ether one of them and I am new to both. What do you think?
Blender is a massive app with a lot of experimental unfinished parts.
Zbrush is perfect on what it does.
How can I compare these two? I like them both.
Sculptris is different, a love story I guess
Just stopping by to say…Lovin your classical sketchbook and the works within it, and also very much appreciating it…A rare breath of fresh air in a for the most part armor coated barbie dolled realm…with alot of great exceptions that is.
Just got a chance to peek in here. Beautiful work. The little woman bust with the head dress and the norse’s head with the muzzled turned down are the two that really resonated with me. Oh and the fish dish.
thank you SD, nimajneb
Only a portrait of a friend, I wasn’t too creative this month, just learning all these damned apps.
WOW - what a fantastic work at all-
really Respect !!!
Chapeau!
Awesome piece Michalis
@yoogy
hey we already met in sculptris forum. Of course this is a sculptris mesh after retopo and some work in zb.
@ cherub
Oh, thanks man.
wow ! what a great thread, spent a wonderful hour looking your whole thread, so very inspiring. love your museum pieces, love the portraits, the sculpts are great, and love the way you render, make us really feel the marble, or bronze, but i admire most all your stone creations… made me want to learn that too thanks a lot !!
Thank you kokoro.
Here, something to share. A detail from ancient marble / athens museum.
Seamless as possible.

thanks michalis… i have started to experiment, it is really interesting, and as i have not yet done much with materials and lightning, amazing how many buttons one needs to press to get certain effect, first results are not to show yet, still too ugly, but improving , so, thanks again for sharing your inspiring work, and the marble texture…
Great sculpt!
I was just looking through your thread Michalis. I thought this render was great! What material /lighting setup did you use?
love the stone sculpts
Thank you.
@ben,
our old friend BlenderInternal engine.
Using two displacement maps, one for the displ mod (4 subs) the other - baked at the 4th sub in zb for the higher frequency and used as bumps (object space-best quality)
Three spots if I remember correctly, and some SSS (multiple pass, nodes compositing). My trick on stone textures is to use a diffuse map without shading at all and overlay on top of SSS. Gives some more crispness and less waxiness. Heavy SSS pass, as screen in compositor.
Here, testing blender-cycles. Waiting for SSS support.
Dimitris in love with Medusa.

Nice one! Classic meets eyeglasses and shirt
P.S. I don’t know what your thoughts are on pertification in front of a beautiful woman (though medusa was a gorgone so I don’t know if this has anything to do with it), but I am inclined to think as Gurdjieff put it, in terms of emotional love vs conscious love, where the first case would always result in petrification so to speak
(again this aren’t Gurdjieff’s words, and in terms of an emotional petrification I am referring to the thought fixation of someone and to someone fantasizing in making the reality last longer then it really does resulting in conflict)
