The Hun (WIP)

Hi SpotLamp, and thanks for answering my question

Brilliant work by the way! I love that render, the sculpting and texturing is awesome, also the hair! What technique did you use for the hair?

Maybe if you made several renders from different shots and with different poses that would be great to see a number of angles and see all the armor and designs of this great character. Anyways, well done, I love it!:+1:small_orange_diamond:sunglasses:small_orange_diamond:+1:

Thx Darukin!

I’m gonna make a turntable movie of this character. I will share it if the render finished.

Really amazing work… excellent modeling and textures. Very inspiring!

I just want to share the turntable video (7 mb mov) I hope you like it

everything looks good. modeling texturing rendering.
why don’t u try different pose. making one of his knee down and staring at the flag as u did. it makes it looks dramatic i think. ofcourse it 's just my opinion
:+1: exellent work!.

Awesome job , really inspiring :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1:

I know this is one of my older work but I had to re-render it with 4K resolution for a book publisher. It was a great challenge for me so I used few compositing tricks to do this job.

Here is the link for the 4K picture: http://www.robertvari.com/temp/hun/HUN_large.jpg

And this is a semple from the final resolution:

It’s amazing how well the hair and beard turned out. It’s quite a render, overall.

Nice! I would roughen up the beard and also show the guy from the renders of materials of armor. Those looked a lot better than your last render.

that looks very nice what did you use to do the guys beard? it looks really nice:+1:

Hey,

to me the character looks a bit odd. The proportions looks off, arms look short compared to the body, the head looks large compared to the body, the helmet looks small compared to the body, and finally the head internal proportions look off also (eyeline compared to the head height for example). The head has a typical Spotlampish look, almost the same look as the Bishop has  Your style!

What I don’t like also, that if it’s a hun, it should not have so many metals on him, huns tended to use leather armors, du to their nature, leather was lighter armour and they could better shoot arrows aback

The final problem I have is the metal shader. While the helmet looks almost perfect (not mentioning that it’s small realitve to the head), the shoulder plate, and the arm plates looks like shiny stone. That’s because they have almost crumpled bumps on it.

That’s all, and the pose could be more interesting. The depth of field doesn’t help at all, but makes the pose and the subject unclear.

The beard is cool!

wow… that’s a hardcore relpy…

Before I write a critique I always do some research to make it more authentic. Here are few suggestions, you could also have taken into account, while writing yours:

Anatomy: This picture is rendered at an extreme camera angle, so it’s really hard to make any meaningfull comments about anatomy. Even if there were issues with the anatomy this picture wouldn’t be enough to make a point becouse of the strong perspective distortion. I created this character using authentic references, to help me do it properly. You might be familiar with them, Da vinci’s vitruvius study or the male base character from pixologic for example.

The armor: You should have done a bit of research on the subject, or a quick walk around at Heroes Square. Just look at the statues of St. Stephen or Hunyadi depicted in armour. This character is a soldier from the battle of Nándorfehérvár. There are quite a few historic painting of the battle for reference. The hungarian army was concidered well trained and modern in those days. They used heavy guns and armour against the turkish army. Here are few picture that you should have a look at.

Awesome work! I love the textures!

Hey Spotlamp, don’t get me wrong!

I said my opinion about the anatomy based upon the images on the first pages, and I still maintain that. I used to use the Vitruvius study also as a reference, I’d see your character without the shoulderplate, because that may alter the visual length of the arm. But somehow I still miss the rythm of the shapes on the arms for example.

I did my resaearch, and not on this occasion, but I love armours, and everything that is related to medieval times. So I have a bit knowledge about armours, and weapons, although I used to check always the internet for references. I can tell that as far as I know nor Hunyadi neither St Stephen, our first King was Scythian or Hun, so what armour they wore is irrevelant here. Hunyadi in the midst of the medieval times wore plate armour, that’s obvious. Your title suggested a Hun (or Scythian) character, and they didn’t wear too much metal, because they had to have the flexibility to achieve their famous archery skills. Hero Square has no Hun at all, there are the seven Hungarian (Magyar) chieftains, and the Kings and Lords of Hungary. Huns are prehungarian folks also referred as Scythians. They were living in between Danube and Tisza rivers around the end of the Roman Empire, and with the death of Attila in 453 they were soon sent back were they come from. More on Huns at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attila_the_Hun

They also wore bronze elements on their leather armour instead of steel.

So, I did my homework, and I think it’s a good image, but I think you have used a lot of artistic freedom :). And I ask you again that don’t get me wrong. I just wanted to help.

Wow looks really nice! I like the sharpness of detail in the plates of his mail, and the detail in the laces of his gauntlets.

Jester aniway Thx your reply here  I know you are a good character artist and I’ll consider your opinions in the future.

I’m sorry if I was a bit harsh, but it’s because of my English…sometimes I’m too blunt…Anyway, the level of detail is really impressive! To be honest, I’d like to see a less distorted rendering of him (I mean the FOV)

hey guys, I’m making an Arpad from Hosok Tere, I’ve seen you pushing out some very cool reference images from the past Hungarian times, any ref you could suggest me on that specific armor?

Hey man brilliant work!

While I agree about the armor as in having too many bright hotspots, the face and beard and hair on the other hand are perfect!! Love it

Please please please tell us how you did the hair and beard!
