The Bull of Minos WIP

Hey Zbrushers,
This is the beginning of my WIP for the bull of Minos, a.k.a the Minotaur. This is just a basic shape and form of the body. Will be working on details and the leather skirt as well. CC is welcome.

The whole chest and abdomen feels very off. A minotaur is classically a very heavily muscled creature and his chest and stomach look almost emaciated. Bulking out his chest and abdomen to body builder or worlds strongest mans proportions would be appropriate.

If the thin emaciated look is what you’re going for on the guy then his arms and legs need to match and currently they are both heavily muscled.

Thanks Droma for your comment. I see what you saw now, so here is an update on the Minotaur a little thicker.

You still has this kinda “bumpy” feel to it ( wet clay feel ), especially his legs, but improvement over your other sculpts. Best way to smooth it is to go 2-3 subd down, gently smooth, and then go to the higher subd, and do the same. He needs work on his abdomen and chest area ( more mass/steroids ), and his feet ( he would never be able to stand on these  ).

Your werewolf turned out pretty good in the end, i’ll hope you’ll go further with this one, and ofcourse polypaint it.

Thanks Victor. I do need to smooth him out quite a bit. He may look too busy in areas. I inflated his chest and abdomen area to give him a larger feel and enlarged his feet a little bit as well. Hopefully I will have an update later this week as time permits.

Its been a while since I made some updates to this character. Here are some minor updates:

Another minor update. Tweaks the ab muscles and created some pants instead of the leather skirt. I just liked the way the pants looked more than the skirt. C&C please.

very cool !!! :+1:

Thanks Modelista.

I was able to get some feedback from friends of mine so I made some really minor updates. Tried to add some texture to the arm muscles so they didnt look so smooth. I also fixed the feet. They looked a bit swollen on the bottom and a bit deformed. Please let me know any feedback before I start to T-pose and create weapons for this guy. C&C please.

right now it looks more like a plastic action figure you can find in toysrus rather than a real creature… You are just sculpting muscles for the sake of muscles without following the basic human anatomy.

try to tune down your minos’ muscles so they look more realistic. Also the anatomy on its back can be better… the same thing goes to his abdominal area…it’s not that they are wrong, it’s just that muscles don’t show up like that no matter how buff you are… even Mavels don’t draw their super buff heroes this way…

Thanks Piggy for your response. I see what you are saying about how it looks more like an action figure than a real breathing creature. I made some changes and posed him before I go in a bake out all my maps for rendering. Please let me know any thoughts. C&C are welcome.

If anyone has any suggestions, I would very much like to figure out a good way to get some cellulite on my character. Make him feel like he isn’t just zero percent body fat.

Dude, I’m thinking the guys that posted above are crackpots… Your first three sculpts were awesome - Especially when you massed out his legs, but smoothing out the abdominal muscles like that?

I can see it on you - You like muscles, alot of people do, and this a creature, a bull, a minotaur… I say; go ahead and add those muscles back in…

I can give you a personal guarantee that it looks alot better…

Bnut, I think Post #9 looks better. To me it looks cool like that. Not that the new one doesn’t look good, but in all honestly I like the one in post #9. Hope you still have it save so that you can decide.

I don’t think you added those extra flaps of skin as “muscles”, but if you did, you can just say it’s not muscles, just his skin is like that. Cause it looks cool. You still have the real muscles massed in and clearly visible so it doesn’t look wrong.

I do think post #9 is a vast improvement over your first post.

Thanks for the responses. Luckily I have saved the previous versions. I’m up to version 40 for this character. I will probably try to render both versions of this character.

wow this response can’t be more misguiding…

of course you can claim those aren’t muscles, but just its skins are like that… this is the same as claiming it’s not that a 3d model is ugly, or that its porportion is wrong… it’s just it is built this way…

in reality there are certain basic rule any artist should follow if they want to improve, and it is to stick with basic human anatomy in the learning stage. Ignoring the basic stuffs and claim it’s “cool” is extremely misguiding, and will only do harm to yourself and other artists…

it is borderline disturbing to see people actually suggesting the OP to use the earlier version after he finally sculpt the model to the point where the anatomy is correct and believable…

the model is looking much better right now… it may not attact those muscles freaks who thinks anything with enough “detail” on them are cool, but you are heading to the right direction. Your model is alot more believable in the front and side view, and you are doing a pretty good job on sculpt the fat and mass on top of thsoe muscles… do yourself a fav and don’t go back…

its back can be better tho

Nothing wrong with my post. That figure has the real muscles massed in and maybe they could use some refinement or not but that’s another story. It’s nothing like the 1st post where it does look emaciated

About the "extra muscles" that look like skin. In art you can accidentally get some cool results when making mistakes. I never said that it's ok to believe those skin flaps are muscles because that would be wrong obviously, and as long as he understands those are not muscles (and I think he does), he could leave them like that because it looks cool as part of his skin. I think I made that clear in my post. It has nothing to do with me being obsessed with muscles or whatever you suggested.

Thanks Piggy, I really appreciate your feedback.

I know for myself there is still a lot of room to grow as an artist and I take everyone’s feedback seriously. As this model has progressed I liked it more and more. Looking back at the earliest versions of thsi model I think to myself, wow, why did I post that ugly piece, but I am happy with my progression.

I will likely stick with the most recent model I posted, and I will work more on the back. All in all I am pleased with how it is turning out.

Znub, thanks.

I understand what you are saying. I know muscles don’t actually look like that, I guess what was going through my head at the time was to try and make a creature with slighlty out of norm body anatomy, but as time went on and I began removing much of the bulky areas, I became a little more interested in the not so ripped and rippled affect.

I appreciate your comments on my model, any feedback is better than no feedback in my opinion, and of course everyone does have an opinion. It is nice to hear them all whether I like to hear it or not.

Here is another update with rendering using mental ray in maya. The skin still may need some work, and I also plan on adding some hair to this.

I will need to change the pants texture or material to look more like leather, but I just wanted to get a quick render out to see the progress I was making.

There are still no eyeballs, but I am working on these too at the moment.
Let me know any thoughts.
