The Bull of Minos WIP

Here is another minor update. I made some material shader changes to the pants as well as added a little specularity on the skin. I will soon attempt to add some hair to the model, as it should appear to be a little sweaty. Any suggestions on how to achieve this. Help would be much appreciated. C&C are welcome. Thanks.

Here is just about the final piece. Other than making a few small adjustments to the eyes, lighting and background, there probably won’t be much more of a change. I wanted to place hair on the body, however I have been having a little trouble getting hair that I was pleased with.

Let me know your thoughts on this model though. Would love to hear any comments or critiques to help me improve.

This was modeled using zspheres and polypaint. I baked out displacement, Normal and color maps to use in Mental Ray for maya 2010 rendering.

Rendering using SSS, Final Gather, RayTrace Shadows and two spot lights.

If any of you are interested in further workflow or pictures of the process let me know.

SSS should be turned way down, looks like he swallowed a lightbulb.

other than that, it’s looking great. first time i saw this thread, but went back and read some of the previous suggestions, and i’m glad you went with a more realistic (less muscular/ripped) version. looks a lot more natural and believable.

Thanks Testure for the comment. I may have gotten a bit carried away on the SSS. First time user. I get more enjoyment out of modeling than anything else.

I almost feel embarrassed to have the very first model versions of this guy on my thread since they look so harrible compared to the latest version, but it’s nice to see the progress I have made and knowledge I have picked up from people like you who may do this for a living. I appreciate all comments and critiques.

I tuned the SSS way down, hopefully not too down, but I think it doesn’s look as orange as the previous one for sure. Let me know your thoughts, thanks again.

One of the few things I didnt like about my attempt in rendering was the pants. These were the pants I polypainted in Zbrush, however as you can see above, they turned out quite lame. Does anyone know how I can get these pants to look the way they did in Mental Ray for Maya render like they do in a regular Zbrush snapshot? This is killin’ me.

Thanks.

nice work…

nice! it’s turning out pretty good

some little things i would work on tho… first is you should always use a lighter background with a more neutral color when you present your model… it’s making it really difficult for others to see your model clearly…

then i would make some minor adjustment on the pants so it matches the quality of your character’s body… especially the way you sculpt the wrinkles…

anyway it’s really nice to see how great it turns out to be… just love the way you sculpt the body.

Thanks bipolar
Thanks Piggy

I know the pants don’t look nearly as good as I would have hoped. I do plan on working on this in the future. I can work on making the background a little lighter so it’s easier to see. I find myself squinting to look at it the way it currently is.
