Just a question, is it expensive to have pieces printed in wax? About how much does it cost to print a ring in wax for example?
they charge $10 per hour to grow/print, a heavy ring like skull would print for about 20 hours, there’s a program to calculate printing time from a file
amazing work, this is the best use of zbrush I’ve seen in ages…
Tomas,
CONGRATS! You’ve done it! Do you know what band these guys from?
Congrats Tomas i’ve always admired your artwork, and your way of sharing tons of info about designing and producing process is simply way beyond generosity
And as been told earlier your way of using zbrush is one of the best small_orange_diamond

that is so cool!
Your skull jewelry is really impressive. I got your name from a link on the gemvision forum, I’m a goldsmith/Matrix user. I was wondering if your base skull model file is for sale? Thanks for your posts!
Michael McFarlin
I posted a model on the fourm…
I’m thinking of buying a hat…then I can take it of to salute you Tomas.
Very inspiring work indeed. Are you using ZB 3.5 yet with the all new Zsphere features? It must be a goldmine for you and your work with them…hahaha
Subscribing to this thread, then I don’t have to miss anything new
More then 5 ********** from me.

Tomas:
Thanks for sharing the skull, keep up the good work!
Michael
Hi ya Tomas its been a wee while since I last dropped by
great to see all your new works.
cool to see ya developing a real large profile now ya rockstar…hehehh.
hey I was wandering around our national jewellery trade fair last week and spent some time chatting to the matrix peeps and the revo lads at there stall.
matrix looks like its improved a bit from what i remember back in the day.
now with the fancy v-ray renderer and all…and yes Ive seen you have been playing with it…lol…but hey it looks so nice why not.
now once we got to talking milling and organics oddly your name popped up in my conversation…and what do you know…he pulled out your squid pendant that you made a few months back [wax model]
very nice to actually see it in the real flesh so to speak.
ooops I do hope they asked first.
so you really must be a rockstar now that even the revo mill crew are using your model to show just what is possible with there new toys.
lol I hope they gave you the new mill and matrix for free…lol:lol: if not they should.
keep up the good works
regards
Tweezer.
Tweezer, thanks for bumping this, as somehow I missed this thread.
Tomas, your stuff is amazing, and thanks a ton for sharing your application of 3d work. When I was reading the 1st page of the thread, I wondered how on earth you got wax models for casting. I appreciate you taking us through the process, it’s great info.
I’ve done some traditional lost-wax pieces for jewelry, and working at that level of detail is a pain in the ass, big time. This is a great solution, and I’m curious if you are willing to rent out your process to others that would like to make some jewelry, but don’t have the money or equipment you do (and it doesn’t compete with your stuff, naturally). Like, take their models and make the wax pieces, have the foundry cast it, and like mail the pieces to the person? Not sure how much extra time you would have for something like that, but I haven’t heard of a service like that before either.
Guess someone could always have a 3d print made and pay someone to make the wax models and have em cast as well…
Anyways, thanks for sharing.
Its nice to see what you can do when you apply yourself.

This thread kicks so much ass. I can’t believe how great and open you are with your tricks of the trade. I am in complete awe of the level of detail you are able to achieve with a mill! It also helps that your design sensibilities are through the roof, and your sculpting chops are high. As a traditional sculptor I’ve been messing around with Precious Metal Clay, but now that I see what’s possible with Zbrush, I think I’ll be looking into this. Thanks a million for being cool guy who puts his craft ahead of his ego! <img src=“http://www.zbrushcentral.com/pixo/atn.gif”>
Hey T.S.Wittelsbach
Absolutley love this thread, and your work!
Very noice article in Rolling Stone, surprised you aren’t in fangoria for designing jewelry for films, or maybe you have:D
If I may, I have a few questions
Do you have any tips or criteria for the following;
- What criteria should be considered when searching for a good milling and/or printing company that can handle small and highly detailed models? (0.5mm to 1mm as a minimum volume/thicknes).
What should I know about the equipment they use?
-
Would you recommend obj over stl file format when printing or milling?
-
Would you ever model in the sprues for RP before it goes to the mould makers?
-
As a guide, when would you consider a design suitable for print/grow over mill?
I am thinking of sending off a few samples to test which companies can handle the type of work I need done, hence the questions.
I would totally use the companies you have recommended thus far but the work I need done needs to be done local…In Oz.
Thanks in advance, you have offered up so much information os far its hard to believe I am asking for more… …but I am.
Kick Ass thread
