Hey I really like your attention to detail!
Hi T.S
Thanks for the quick reply.
I think i understand what you mean by crap mesh from rhino.
I’m forever having issues with exploding mesh when importing to z-brush from rhino…I have been exporting obj,s into 3dsmax tweeking them before exporting to z-brush for sculpting…but even this is not always reliable…lol
I’m thinking I will have to buy modo as the build times you have quoted seem something like a wet dream from where i have been of late.
can you recommend any good tutorials for modo that will get me up to speed quickly for this type of modeling.
are you simply exporting obj from modo directly into z-brush or is there any special considerations to take into account.
also why dont you just model directly in z-brush…or is this too long compared to modo.
is it possible for you to make a work flow movie showing your build style
and what you are doing as far as base modeling and the steps you undertake to import into z-brush. I know this may be quite a painful thing to undertake but im sure many users here would love you to pieces if you could…heh heheh.
I have been playing about with the wonderful alpha textures and do make a lot of my own…are you making custom textures etc in photo shop to use in your sculpting…or just using the tools in z-brush.
I have tried the polymer style prints but they still aint up to the fine quality detail we are getting from the t66.
I’m very much blown away by the detail you are getting from your mill,
I have never even considered it a viable way to go untill I saw your amazing work…my problem is although there are a few peeps here with these machines…I dont think they could even come close to the degree of detail that you have managed to achieve with yours.
also a point of interest…have you ever had a close look at the moari style of full face tattoo or moko…I come from new zealand and have a close affinity for this style of tribal tattoo I would love to try and make some jewellery using this style of face / body carving.
traditionally this was a carving into the flesh technique using stone and bone carving tools to create a very much 3d relief pattern.
It would seem your work has some close relationships going on here and as such you may find it an interesting research topic for your ongoing design works.
I will be very much keeping an eye on this thread and mean to keep in touch
warm regards.

a few pics of some of my early work…lol nothing like the quality you have achieved…im almost too embarrassed to put them in here :o …Im really just starting to learn what one can do with the surface patterns.

Bas Mazur - thanks again… no I haven’t tried Cinema4D. I’m having a hard enough time trying to figure this one out
AriesGal- I’m just an obsessive wing nut. I have no choice I was made this way.
tweezer- most of their in house tutorials are very good.
yes straight obj exports, no issues that’s why i use it I just find modo a very very fast and effective block up tool.
you know my friend has been asking for a movie for a year now, so I think i have an idea for one. trust me I don’t know that it will be very educational. but after the holiday orders are complete I’ll work on one.
as far as alphas go I think they are very cool, I used the basic circle spray patters on the squid a bit it was just perfect for it. but for the most part I do it all by hand.
I don’t know if I said it to you or not if I have sorry but you should look at what my friend Travis is doing on his viper absolutely amazing. his sight is www.rjmrp.com
i love the Maori imagery and the people they were insanely kind to me when I was there. I think your right about it as an inspiration.
never be embarrassed by your work, honestly I feel the same way around here.
there are some amazing artist in this community.
I’m a good sculptor but the transition to the digital medium has been a challenge.
so keep it up, you work is fun never feel embarrassed about it.

Hi T.s
Thanks for your words of encouragement and yes as a complete noob with all this 3d stuff…[apart from rhino which i do my commercial jewel builds on]
I do feel a bit daunted looking at all the lovely sculpts and builds here…but yet still I yearn to improve and thats the main thing.
I have just gone and got my self modo for my xmass present…[don’t tell my wife…lol] and yes it seems very nice thus far…hopefully i will have some new models to look at towards then end of my holiday.
now I will ask is it ok to post works to discuss in this thread…as I don’t want to blow all over your work/in progress thread…or should I start another thread for this.
or perhaps I can do this privately via email etc until I feel my work is at a level that would be interesting for others to view my developments.
Hope your having a nice xmass break T and that you haven’t got that mill running 24/7…heh heheh.
Oh well im back to my training vids…catch up in a day or two.
hey when where you way down here in nz?
holiday or work?..im guessing it was film stuff from your earlier chats.
A quick question…when exporting as an obj from modo how do you keep the subdivided mesh, all I seem to get is the base box mesh when i open it in rhino or z-brush.
[I found the freeze button…hehheh]
Also can you advise on any work flow ideas for removing/avoiding overlapping mesh parts seeing as I was wanting to go to wax print at some point…The sub-di mesh,s from z-b eliminates quite a few but really I must remove all of them for the print system.
This has always been the big headache for this type of build workflow.
You know if I were you I would start a thread of your work and keep it up and out there. there is so much talent in this community it would be a shame for you not to have all the input you can get.
always feel free to post here as well as email me with any questions I can help with…
Nz for vacation.
when exporting as an obj from modo how do you keep the subdivided mesh, all I seem to get is the base box mesh
thats all I use modo for is the box mesh I subdivide in Zbrush.
as far as preping meshs for growing I use magics to boolean and clean the meshes up.
I hope that helps…
t
Hi T… Thanks for the reply.
when you refer to “magics” do you actually mean Magics stl expert.
as I am a bit confused.
My wax printer runs this magics stl expert as part of his app pipeline and we mostly use it for repairing stl files from outside clients as there always seem to be many errors to fix before going to print, but all I have really used it for is repair work and have never thought to try it for anything else.
however from memory it only uses stl files…so are you exporting from z-brush as obj to your matrix/rhino and converting to stl befor you finish your build work using magics…then back to matrix for setting up your tool paths.
what version of matrix are you running?
I have to agree the mesh tools in rhino are somewhat clunky and the mesh bolean tools are sort of quite messy where they join…[if they do…lol]…was it this that made you look for another tool like magics?..thats if im thinking of the same magics app?
Also I would like to say thankyou for spending the time to disscuss your intersting build style I have found it very helpfull.
kind regards
Tweezer
the full version of magics 13 is where I do all my finishing for growing.
http://www.materialise.com/materialise/view/en/92074-Magics.html
so it goes…
modo
zbrush
matrix 6
magics
matrix 6
lol
no problem.
happy new years.
t
AWSOME! its nice to see an artist modeling in an different genre, some thing new lol.
Hey Thanks T,
I think the magics prog that we have been using is an older version but after comparing the specs they still seem very much the same…however I wont be able to look at buying the nu one anytime soon and it will take me some time to get better with z-brush and also modo is quite a deep app as well so i will have me hands sort of quite full for a wee while yet.
what do you think of your matrix 6…I did have a look at it a few years ago when I first started learning 3d modeling and decided that although it has a lot of cute builder solutions the reality was you always needed to build stuff from scratch anyway and have just stuck with the base rhino system and techjewel aka techgems. and to be truthfull I only really use that plug for stone models.
How do you keep your surface patterns so nice and tight looking in z-brush,
I have been trying to emulate something like it and have found it quite difficult…[lol]…as if it would be easy…heh heheh.
All the best for the new year
king regards
Tweezer
Tweezer-I work in the 1 to 3 million poly range. Thats as big as I can use but it give good surfaces.
i’m stoked the squid and gourd part should be back from the foundry monday.
woooohoooo
I’ll have some pics up next week.
I should have some very cool masonic pieces comming soon.
sorry no posts or answers untill now, I have been busy filling holiday orders.
Thank God.
let hope the valentine orders will be picking up next week.
I hope everyone had a great holiday.
Tomas
Thanks T, this is what I came up with after seeing, by your images posted, how you go about things in Modo… still WIP, will do some more on it this weekend…
It part of the badge of my old army unit…

Beautiful!!
thank you very much anandpg.
heyo…
been a while been busy filling orders not much design time.
this is a funky fiddler crab for a pendant.
i’ll have some new stuff comming soon.
man there is some great new stuff out here congrats guys…
always inspiring…
thanks
t
Great as usual, are the hard copies on you webpage… I am still as jealous as hell, would love to go into your line, but our market is to small, maybe I must design and use your services…
Regards Ziggy
WOW!! Can’t wait to see the pendant!
thanks guys…
and before I get ripped on anatomy I know a fiddler crab is a land crag and doesnt have the back water crab legs.(dont you like my very informed anotomiclistic termananologyisms)
but I’m a jeweler dammit and it works better for me…
thank you.
t
Awesome work yet again Tomas.
hope the detail on the shell mills and casts well.
what is the finished size?
I look forward to seeing the finished cast piece.
