In the next coming weeks I will begin making the main dinosaur for a video game me and my team are developing. I will hopefully be receiving DVDs from eat 3d on how to make a next gen character for my 15th birthday. I will probably watch those DVDs before I tackle this project. I am somewhat new to Zbrush so this might take a while to make, but it is a learning process. I was wondering if anyone would know how to even start a project like this. Like make a base mesh or use zspheres along with zsketching. I need your suggestions!
You could use zspheres or create a zsketch or import a file into zbrush for editing the details.
What would do you think would be the best approach to this? Create the base mesh or use zspheres? I’m getting a tablet for my birthday so it maybe just be easier to use zspheres.
It will little bit easy to do base mesh in your favourite program like Maya, 3d Max, SoftImage… and import into Zbrush.
Some times the favourite program would be Zbrush! So crate base mesh with ZSpheres!
for base mesh there is not a rule. Just go with your easiness.
The best approach on how to create your base mesh is to choose your favorite or most familiar software. Usually, zspheres take more time to create the base mesh but this might depend on practice.
I sometimes work with the adaptive skin feature of zspheres but I am not used to it. So you can move the skeleton and with it the zsketch. I did not try if you can actually do the detailing and move the zspheres skeleton afterwards, so the skin would adapt to the new pose.
Alright so I just got the final concept for this beast. I was going to try and create a base mesh, but honestly with me getting my new tablet I find it more fun to work in zbrush than blender. I’m also scared to death about starting development on this guy.
I will probably use zspheres to knock out the proportions really quick, but I still need to learn how to set up a ref image in zbrush.
If anyone has any tips of getting a ref image in zbrush please tell me.
Also any other tips are welcome as well.

That should be useful: http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?t=136 and http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?t=93661
Your concept is top notch, by the way.
Thanks for the help dude. Now I am stuck in just the side view and I can’t rotate around my sculpt. I also don’t know how to change the transparency of my zsphere.
Probably you are doing something wrong - you should be able to rotate objects without a problem, if you follow just these steps:
- Import your reference image.
- Set the material to Flat Color.
- Press Texture -> Crop and Fill.
- Select the object that you wish to sculpt.
- Select another material such as the Fast Shader.
- Draw the object.
As regards opacity: go to Preferences -> Draw - there are sliders to change the opacity settings (Why here? Who knows… )
Alright so I have started on a base mesh as well as doing a quick test sculpt in zbrush.

It looks like you have the proportions down. Perhaps it’s me, but it looks like his legs are just a little too short in comparison to your sketch. I’m not sure. When you’re ready to texture this bad boy, you should check out this link on dinosaur skin texture:

Awesome job! Keep going!
Thanks for the tip about the legs. I fixed them. It was the second joint that was too short. I just need to drag it out slightly.
Here’s another update. This will probably be the last update for a while. My next one will hopefully have the main parts of the head done along with some more body shots. So be patient guys. Like I said this is my first real serious sculpt with Zbrush and I want to take my time with it.
