Squiddy WIP

This is great I like it a lot. Can’t wait to see what else you do with it.

Fantastic as always, mxhaunted :+1: :+1: I’m pleased you jumped back on this. Been my longtime fave work on here since I first spotted it, so I can’t wait to see it finished mate

Destined for top row

This is looking great. More updates! Stop sleeping!! :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks for the replies. I’m chuffed by how much interest I’m getting from you lot. It keeps me spurred on to getting this little piece finished off.

Jason Belec, Fair comment on the suckers. I’m not happy with them so I’m going to twist the tentacles about a bit more so less of the suckers can be seen. Hopefully that It’ll give the tentacles a bit more life, as you point out. KrakeCMT, Yup, you’re right about the barnacles needed to be blended into the model more. It was a quick test to see if they’d work or need more work… which they do. The body is quite plain as I didn’t want to make it too complex and lose the basic shape of the character. I hope to lose a bit of the simplicity when the proper barnacles and stuff are placed on it and blended in better. Oh yeah, and it was rendered in Zbrush. MonsterMaker, Now there’s a seal of approval. Thanks muchly. :) Angelstein, Stop putting a curse on this with you “top Row” ramblings, dude! :P Anyways, here’s a mini post. I remembered that I have to give him wings. So I spent much of yesterday building several different wings in Maya and then seeing how the deformed in Zbrush when Subdivided.

  • The first base cage didn’t translate well in Zbrush as the wing membrane was too thin and Zbrush had trouble differentiating between the front and back faces.
  • The second base cage just had a single surface for the wing membrane (no back face) but that left a horrid sharp edge down the edges of the wing and mains structure of the wing.
  • The third model worked fine now that it was modelled in the final pose and shape and the wing membranes not being too close together… and it’s below.
I learnt quite a bit with trying to blend surface detail. The wing membranes were polygrouped so I could apply one detail and then I had to go in and smooth out the edge. Moving up and down in the SDiv helps a lot when doing this. For some reason even though you’ve smoothed out one level of detail you want to get rid of gets transferred down a SDiv level. So it helps if you step back and fourth with the SDiv quite a bit.

So after much rambling, here’s the wing. Admittedly, it’s nothing special, but it’s going to be in the background and out of focus. I hope to get the left wing finished very soon (as there is no way in mirroring objects with more than one SDiv level. :/

Thanks for your feedback and patients and please keep it coming. :) MX

admirable sculpting skills you have… very clean details!

run this script with show actions on…mirrored a wing at subd4…maybe this will help…my wing sux but I was rushing…hope it helps…kewl model you have …

Top ro . . . oh very good indeed! Your way to modest mate

Hmm, wings eh? I just can’t imagine this with wings myself  Could be a bit OTT? We’ll have to wait and see what you come up with

Erkaerbar, thanks.

Ron Harris, Thanks. Although the script crashed out half way through. Something to do with a missing interface Ipress thingy. :/ Angelstein, I’m not sure about the wings either. It’s just the character is meant to have them... but as you said, it’s a bit OTT. They may work if they are mostly in shadow. Who knows. OK, forgive me. I got carried away with doing a silly mock-up image using the existing Zbrush Document with added (old) tentacles, new wings and a photo I took on holiday last year. Very rough and hopefully the final image will be MUCH better. :)

Nicely done mockup

I see your also a night Owl like me mate  \

Daylight is overated!

I like the mockup, MX.
Sorry about the script…I ran it a little bit ago and it crashed on me as well…made my silly little wing and ended… what it was to show was I skinned it, and while in edit went to the tool pallette…make polymesh 3d…then edit mode with the new tool…deofrmations and mirrored…then in the Polygroups in the tool menu I clicked the group visible…I hope I got that order right…if I didnt let me know…The group visible though is what solved the prob for me.

well looking great!

ron

very nice…but I’d lose the starfish and head more towards cthulu in your rendering.

El-d

I like the mock-up!! Great character. I love the barnacles(sp?) and starfish on him. I can’t get over this guy. Too cool, looking forward to updates.

this is very nice !

I like especially the head.
Cool model

Cthulhu?
that damn creature’ll eat all of us:lol:

Angelstein, Yup, I am a creature of the night… although I really have to get to bed soon. :expressionless:

Ron Harrris, Cheers. I’ve built the other wing now so all is well. But I’ll keep your technique in mind for when mirroring is needed int he future. El-d, will keep the star fish but move it to a less obvious place. Not smack bang in the middle of his belly. Cheers for you others who commented. :) Well, after making a bit of a stupid mistake/decision on Friday night, which I hope hasn’t scuppered my chances of something or other… I may have made a bit of another fudge-up… I thought it’d be nice for him to have a skull in his hand (which I slapped in an un-detailed model in). But then I remembered that he’s meant to be HUGE… mountain sized. So does having something like that in his hand make him too ickle?!

Hi_rez_test_scale_test.jpg

Pardon the cr*p lighting and missing geometry. I’m still working on the head to iron out distorted detail problems. MX

ye man - his looking f… awsome:+1: …but i agree He looks way too small (seems like a very big dude …you could put a boat or somthing else) just suggestions

and i agree with fOOd, some scaled down props in a scene would make him look huge (which if u take the cthulu route, he is supposed to be a giant)

but regardless, he looks great

but where’s the wings?

keep goin!!!

Maybe the legs could be a little bigger, and Im not a fan of the skull…

but this guy is great, I like the idea of him dwelling in a cave.

Heading for the top Im sure.

Well done

I think Jon Pertwees Dr. Who needs to sort this guy out! Squiddys an updated Sea Devil, really, isn`t he? Cool!

I like the modelling detail. You`re probably planning to work more on the legs, but I like the way their lack of complexity guides the eye back up to the head.

Um, barnacles:yes. Starfish: no! Theyre just toocute` and are inseparable in my mind from buckets and spades!

Cheers,

R

I like the lighting now. As for size, chthulu was bigger than a boat! 50-100 feet tall.
