Squiddy WIP

The suckers definitely do not suck

I don’t think you need to overanalyze the suckers placement. The last picture shows a good varied placement and size. I would rather you added a few pronounced wrinkles around the eye region. I know it is slightly out of character for a sea creature but your final render might see the suckers steal the limelight. A couple of deep set skin indentations and a decent set of eyes should keep the extreme detail of the suckers from grabbing all the attention.

Anyway I am just a sucker with an opinion  Damn, I am losing it

Love your progress so far. Impatiently waiting for a textured render.

Ah tenetacles are better, it is now everyone’s choice to go further, do more, so your decision rules. I could give suggestions until the were-cows come home.

I do think TVeyes, has a valuable point, worth a quick try to see how it comes out.

Sorry for littering this thread with my posts, but Ive taken a liking to this piece. Anyway I thought of something last night, and I watched a video I downloaded where an octopus was killing all the sharks at this aquarium. In the video, you can clearly see the octopus’s suckers stretching as its tentacles twisted and curled. I would venture a guess that a squid would be made of similar stuff, so maybe the sucker deformation could be a non-issue.

Anyway, just another humble 2 cents. At 2 cents a pop, I think Im in the hole about a buck fifty now

TVeyes, Cheers for the comment. As for the wrinkles around the eyes, Yesterday I did the opposite concerning the wrinkles around the eyes. :expressionless: I was trying to make it less human and more animal. But I understand what you’re talking about. I’ll look into adding detail to that area soon.

Jason, no worries. Cheers for the feedback. All feedback is welcome. It’s good to have a fresh pair of eyes to notice things that my tired eyes overlook. :)

Devaar, comment away. It’s all useful and welcome. Yeah, the suckers on the tentacles do have a certain amount of flexibility. Something that I don’t think I can address with this model. After watching POTC and the detail they used in their character I don’t think I could even get close. That said, I think they over detailed the character. It was hard to work out the form or what half the Davie Jones crew were. That said, Davie Jones had fine suckers.

I must say now… this isn’t really just a squid. I thought the title of this thread was amusing but that’s about it. He’s meant to be Cthulhu and hopefully I’ll get around to building his body to go with this head. There are flaps/plates just under the circular filter thingies that rest on his shoulders. I just need to work out what the body is going to look like. MX

Awesome sculpting and design.

really cool, how many subdiv’s did you do, and how much box modeling etc. can you break down your timeline for the process, it would help me alot to know how much time i should expect to spend to get these kind of slick results. Again really nice work.

Cam Farn, I’m not sure if the timeline for this model would be good reference for you. The process is very… organic… to say… I’m just making it up as I go along.

The base mesh was made in maya (1276 quads) with a few edge loops in Zbrush to add resolution and those little tentacles on either side. I’ve sub-divided it 7 times to around 5 and a half million polygons. Most of the actual facial and structural details were done on level six. Level seven was more for skin textures and tightening up bits and pieces and obviously the suckers (which I may go in and distort a bit more so they don’t look so clean). It’s taking me a long time to get this far. Much down to Zbrush crashing out and doing odd things. Some people can turn out superb work in no time at all… and others take longer. Hope this is a bit of use to you. :)

So yeah… the skin is mostly there. It’s been a long slog. I think I may go and add some colour to it to give me a bit of a break from the modelling side.

Someone teach me to do it like they did it in POTC!

Crits and comments are welcome as always. :) MX

It looks great, I think you could start the body. Do textures all at once if possible.

womball, to tell you the truth… I haven’t got a clue what to do with the body yet. :expressionless:

What was the discription of the chtulu in the book?

If I say that my somewhat extravagant imagination yielded simultaneous pictures of an octopus, a dragon, and a human caricature, I shall not be unfaithful to the spirit of the thing. A pulpy, tentacled head surmounted a grotesque and scaly body with rudimentary wings… It represented a monster of vaguely anthropoid outline, but with an octopus-like head whose face was a mass of feelers, a scaly, rubbery-looking body, prodigious claws on hind and fore feet, and long, narrow wings behind. This thing, which seemed instinct with a fearsome and unnatural malignancy, was of a somewhat bloated corpulence…
— H.P. Lovecraft, “The Call of Cthulhu”…

-hope this helps
your work is excellent btw… :+1:

So we can see it on the TOP ROW :+1: :+1:

You have a great sculpting talent. Fantastic work. I’d love to see this finished and a final render, possibly some sort of sub/ship Vs Squid sea battle would be awesome!

10 outa 10

Sqiddy is cool! It made me think of Space Jockey from Ridley Scott’s Alien although they are substantially different.

Logick, Cheers for that info. I kinda got that idea from the images that I’ve seen. It just left a lot to personal interpretation. But that’s kind of a good thing.

Zoetrope, Top row? That would be sweet. I don’t think I’ll do it with this one but I’m improving. :)

Angelstein, Cheers for the all the comments on my work. :)

Cheers for the comments from everyone.

OK… this is the bit I’ve been dreading. I’ve been semi-doodling today on the body. I’ve blocked it out and started to add detail… but it ain’t quite right. Looks a bit too much like armour and too superhero-like for the head.

So this is where I’ve got to so far. I may start again from the blocked out version or possibly just use the head in an image. I dread my score slipping with this body design. :(

Comments and crits are welcome as normal.

Your original ‘Squiddy’ paired with this body sculpt? A Marriage made in Heaven, or should that be Hell!?

This is going to look truly spectacular and horrifying when complete.

Keep us posted please mate

Im sure youve done this already, but in case you havent, physically and mentally put the head on the body and just feel…

Ok thats corny, but still. I think the body is a good concept, but I agree with you that something is wrong. I think the body should have non-human proportions. Proportion is what will separate monster from guy-in-a-suit. Try longer, almost gangly arms, and legs that must be all squat and bent up to hold that height. Or possibly, Cthulu is just one of those entities that will never be right with a fully realized form. Mabye its true form is just a head that doesnt end or begin anywhere definite. Whichever way you go, I commend you on thinking twice before going with the next "obvious" step. Regardless, Im sure that when you are done it will still be a damn fine work. D

Cheers AngelStein.

Devaar, Good idea. I like the idea of changing around the normal proportions on the body to make it less human. Maybe I’ll take it along the lines of a crab with large arms with pronounced two fingers to be almost pincer-like. The back legs should be squat to handle the weight. MX

http://www.cthulhulives.org/cocmovie/trailer.html

Found this fan made movie looks sweet, so I ordered it. A modern day silent era style movie and created on a low budget without cgi. They seem to go with the second description of the cthulhu which has the squiddy on a dragon like body with claws.
I don’t quite like the humanoid version imo. It is accurate if you go with the stories artist who had a hazy vision of the chthulu and produced the relief early in the story. However later on in the story it said that the cthulu came to earth with a statue of himself which was more dragon like and had rudementary wings.

Cheers Womball, That’s a pretty neat.

I was thinking of giving him wings. It’s such an odd construct. Part octopus, part dragon, part human. Anyway, I’ve been busy doing stuff (mostly at the pub) but I’ve spent a little time working on Squiddy. As was mentioned I’ve made a quick render of the head and body. There’s a bit of a problem though. The fingers seem to want to sag. They look fine at base mesh level but when I view the model at a higher rez it kinda deforms. Anyway, here’s the quick test render.

I’m not used to modelling chunky individuals so it’s looking a bit rough. The legs may have a similar feel to the crab like arms. The model should look less like putty when I get the skin/shell detail applied to it (I hope). As always, feedback is welcome. MX
