darn, it’s a shame you are leaving this one behind, it had so much promise as a finished character, I really hope you’ll continue this at a later stage. on the other hand I’m excited though, since I can’t wait to see whatever new you might cook up, if this one is anything to go by, it will truly rock! (yes, now you MUST better or atleast equal this one, anything else will be sneered at!! muahahahaaaahaaaa…ehrm…) :smiley:

as for the render, I’d love to see this done in a less photorealistic way, as it would suit the style of the character alot better, given that this was likely just a test though, it looks really good.

Zork: I think you’re right, I kept getting caught up trying to make realistic materials, but it never felt like a good fit because it’s not that kind of character. The Red Monster thread has really been inspirational and maybe it would be worth trying to come at this with a more playful approach. I’m going to be out of town for a couple weeks so we’ll see what happens after I get back.

sorry to dig out this old thread again, but I finally got around to giving this guy some hair, thought I would post an update. I did the hair & render in Cinema 4D, the model & paint are Zbrush.

What a great style. Very effective blend of cartoonish proportions and subtle texturing. A little more glossiness on the eyes might be cool, but I’m not certain it really needs it.

Djembe – I think you’re right about the eyes. right now they’re just planar mapped and would probably benefit from having some actual geometry in the pupil & iris area, which might show off some more specular detail.

frogspasm – Nicholson might be funny! I was imagining Karloff since he’s sort of Grinchy-looking. . . .
