Slorp's sketches

I never get enough time usually to just spend on a free-sculpt. So today i decided to see how much I could get done in 1 hour, starting from a super-simple Maya base. I’m pretty happy with the results, especially since I had a crash during my first retopo attempt and had to redo a little bit of work.

Heres a look at where I was when the 1 hour timer went off:

Here’s a video look at the initial rapid sculpt:

And another video look at the retopo:

This will be a nice addition to your sketchbook!
Impressive for an hour!

Yes, very good i must say. Creative use of the Layer brush if im not misstaken, something i must try.

It was a heaping helping of claytubes brush, flatten, and yes… dum dum dum… the layer brush. Thanks for the compliments. I just finished some work last week, and start a new contract next week, so I’m not feeling like starting anything big. Gonna try a do one of these a day this week.

put in a second hour for my sketch time today.

I’ve decided that I really kinda like this guy, so I’m going to flesh out a full body. Give him a little comic raygun or something at the end too, not sure yet. Just making it up as I go along.

interesting alien guy…although his head looks really big compared to the body size

Paul

–yeah, I’m thinking big head/ tiny body dynamic with a really small waist and even smaller feet. (maybe). Like I said, I’m winging this one all out. Will post again later today with some updates hopefully.

update from yesterday. got too busy to post.

posed and created a raygun today:

Starting a new character now called The Floundress. A Super-hero with exceptional flounder-like abilities. um… I have yet to figure out what those might be. Any suggestions?

Here’s where its at now (still very early on):

'm still laughing! This will be a fun design to watch.

did some sculpting on the front side today with the basic fabric waves. Gotta still apply the same treatment to the back. Then its on to stitching and then fabric weave.

I just have to say how much those eyes make me giggle. Before I even read what your description, I saw them and knew she was a flounder. As for “exceptional flounder-like abilities” uh . . . camouflaging herself in sand springs to mind.

thank you! I can’t really decide whether to downplay the browridge and make the flounder eyes where her real eyes are, or keep it as it is now, where it is all just mask. Any thoughts there?

Personaly, I like where they are, up and kind of off to one side. I feel like that’s what made it so identifiable to me.

Got to much more of a completed place today on the body suit.

Kinda borrowing some stylistic cues from the female costumes in the X-men movies, specifically Rogue’s ( http://img2.timeinc.net/ew/dynamic/imgs/060522/15288__rogue_l.jpg )

has it really been this long? Wow, I’ve been busy lately, no time to do any of my own stuff until now. I’m getting close to ready for texturing, so mocked up a paintover today for how the eventual costume will look. With any luck, might be here in a few days (for real).
