just a quicky head sculpt. mostly just for testing stuff…

also tested 3dcoat’s new auto retopology on the head, thought it was pretty decent!

I like the eyes and the nose a lot. The booger flaps came out real nice. The head looks uncomfortable as a neck nub coming out. It would be great to see the neckline incorporate the trapezius muscles for a little more weighted balance.

I tried 3d coat as well for the auto-topo feature but, really, what’s the point. You can direct the flow of auto generated topo but the mesh isn’t really anything deformably useable so why bother with it? A quick enough result can be gotten from zbrush’s retopo tool. I suppose it can be helpful to have a first pass, but anything deforming, i will have to do by hand anyways and anything not critical to deforming is easy enough to extrude and loop split. I really like the idea of autotopo and controlling the directions but it felt more like ‘look what happened when i pressed this button, kinda cool’ ‘ok, now back to real work’. If the point is only to create a better mesh resolution for concept sculpts, i’d rather just use zbrush remesh.

The ear looks fair but the rest of the topology is pretty bad.

Not to derail your thread, it’s just a very interesting topic, auto topology, and i’m interested to hear if others have had better experiences with it!

Any thoughts?

I really hope i just suck with the tool, i’d love for this kinda thing to be useable.

nwargasm, youre prolly right. do you like the regular topology tools in 3dcoat? maybe it would be useful to first do an auto retopo for the overall, then go in and edit spots that need to deform… i dont know…

really like your work btw.
cheers

looking cool - much more fun hey
should finish this up nearly there and some cool forms

yeah man, some cool stuff here, keep it going! I have to admit i’m not really familiar with 3d coat, or topogun. I really would like to learn these two programs but im usually so pressed for time i end up doing it in zbrush or maya. I fooled around a bit with 3d coats topology tools and the draw brush is amazing. The other tools are similar to NEX for maya but it’s definitely nice to have so many tool options in one package (3d coat). I was hoping you had mastered 3d coat and that you could tell me the best way hehe :D. I’m sure you’re on the right track, using auto topo to bang out 70% and remesh the rest. I definitely look forward to seeing if you have any more luck with it, I’ll keep watching. Keep the cool work coming!

ps. Thanks!

How did you style the hair planes? You just extuded them from her head and used Zbrush move brush?

thanks guys!

nwargasm, yea by looking at those topo vids of yours, youre really proficient with maya so it might not be needed for you. i like 3dcoat’s topo tools because it feels so natural and non-technical.

killahpriest, i just appended subtools of planes and positioned and used the move brushes.

seanJM, sure, it is just a quicky sculpt but i dont mind any criticism, im all for it!
thanks! nice reel!

HUN-Firebat, yes you choose your polycount before you start, default is 3000.

inspired by food’s hard surface stuff, but man its difficult, i really need to spend some time on this…
