Serval, king of the beasts (eye Zscript + FurBrush included)

Thank you very much aurick!

Greetings,

Here is my recently completed serval, not the French Wolverine though. All modeling was done in ZBrush, touch-up work was done as usual in PhotoShop.

Additionally mindsculptor had asked me to record a Zscript of my eye process. So when I made the eye for the above image I recorded the session, there are no annotations in the Zscript because CTRL+Spacebar didn’t seem to work for me. My process is essentially the one that Pixolator demonstrates in the 1.55b demo. If you have any type of questions, either post them in this thread or private message me.

[EDIT]

Also I thought that I would mention that most of the time that I use these eyes I drop my main model to 2.5d and place the eyes on another layer; however, you can also use the multimarker tool to place eyes in an existing model.

A most excellent rendering…love the fibre work…!!! I will take a look at your eye script later this evening when I return home…The eye you made is very convincing to me. I have no real critique of this cat, only praise. Thankyou for sharing.
Ron

I agree this is a very good image from fiberbrushwork to stylyzed background
and this one has a painterly style and does not look flat ,…great work :+1: :+1:

Hi Ron,

Thanks a lot, glad to hear that you like the piece! Thank you as well Ron, you are always so generous with giving Zscripts along with your work! :+1:

Matt

Hey there jantim I was just replying to Ron when you posted. Thanks a lot again!

Matt

excellent work as usual, thx for the zscript!!

Thank you mindsculptor! I hope the Zscript is helpful.

Did you paint the skin with fiber brush? Good job. :+1: :+1: :+1:

Thanks guys!

Hey there Pilou! Actually the ears and legs of servals are the largest of all cats compared to their body size. They use their ears to locate and hunt prey then they jump straight on to it.

Hi dan59314, yeah I generally paint a basic texture in Projection Master and then drop it to 2.5d to apply the fur. I then take it into PhotoShop and add more detail.

Thanks again!

Matt

Great pic, Matt! 50.

wow! i cannot imagine that you can actually control the fiber in such a way.

would you mind to share your setting of the fiber or your way of applying the fur technique??

love it!:laughing:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:

Hi,

I agree with sooon…you have certainly nailed down using that fiber brush and would be quite interested in how you go about it…more in written form than a zscript I think would be helpful for me anyways…if ya have a minute somewhere to jot something down…I for one would be most grateful as I have a wolf or two awaiting!

Hello all, thank you very much for the great comments!

I had a little time this morning and thought I would take the chance to write a small step-by-step on what I am doing when painting fur. Also I have included the set-up for my fur brush. It is the ā€œFiberBrushā€ with slightly modified settings.

As with the eyes I generally drop the image to 2.5d, however, I have also used a texture when I wanted the model to remain 3d. In order to paint fur onto the models texture drop it with Projection Master and apply the following steps, keeping in mind to paint only on the parts that directly face you. Step 1:

I created a basic sphere shape for this tutorial. One important thing to remember when you want to paint hair with this technique is that your mesh should be smooth. Any large variations in the depth (i.e. rough deep cut features) will cause the fur to look unnatural. In the below image you can see that I have applied the basic colors for the fur onto the sphere. If your mesh is high enough density painting directly onto it will work just fine. In this case I have subdivided the sphere once.

Step 2:

I began by painting the edge of the sphere. Note that the sphere in my example has been dropt to 2.5d. When you use the FiberBrush to paint fur you should use two similar colors as ā€œSecondary colorā€ and ā€œMain colorā€, one darker and one lighter. When painting make sure that you follow the direction that the hair is supposed to grow. In this example I have painted from the center out.

Step 3: I continued to paint the sphere according to the above description using slight color variations to further build up the fur in the center. Step 4: Now I began adding more detail to the entire sphere. I did this by varying the "Rgb Intensity" as well as - in Tools -> Modifiers - "Density" and "Grooming". Depending on what you are painting you will need to modify the settings to serve your needs. Furthermore you can use other strokes like the "DragRect" to add more detail. This is just a basic step-by-step to get you going with the FiberBrush. You will need to play with it a while until you are comfortable with painting fur in your own style. If you have any questions please either post here or pm me.

Your work continues to impress, Matt :+1:

Thanks for sharing your tips and tricks with us all…

Hey there again NLightUK, thank you again for the wonderful comments!

Matt

very cool work, i c u used different lengts of hair…i tried the same but it affects all the fur :rage:
so i could throw 3 hrs work in the trash :rage: :rage: :rage:
it ****ed up my entire model…
how do i get this multiple fur thingy??? i dont want to finish it right a way…i need to save but when i reload the model everything looks stupid…
at this moment i am just not happy, if i save my model z-brush doesnt save my edited material stuff…thats pretty stupid:rage:
grrr and without the autosave all your work goes down the drain…i cant undo my material change, and ill have to start from scratch again. …i dont want to so ill go and play a game or something and maybe next month ill see z-brush again…i am so pissed…
in one view z-brush works easy, on the other hand it is totally unlogical.
i need a cold shower:confused:

Hey there mindsculptor! I am sorry to hear that.
Well, I do not use a fur material at all, I use the FiberBrush and paint the hair directly onto the model, the material I use is the normal FastShader when painting hair/fur.
As for materials, yes you should definitely save your modified material, otherwise it will be gone once you close ZBrush. When you load a material again keep in mind that the material you are loading will replace the one that you have selected at the moment, so best apply a material that you do not intend to use and load your custom material over it. You can apply more than one material to an object by painting it on in Projection Master.
The different length of hair that you see in the image was painted on though, not rendered through a material. I posted a sample of the brush that I am using in this thread.

Hopefully this helps.

Matt

i c i used the fibermaterial and then rendered it…i was just pissed @ the reply before this one…i took a cold shower
i am fine now…
