Hey thank you very much Stargo! I am really glad to hear that you like it!

Been playing around with this, but have had mixed successā¦
Would you mind posting a short Zscript, or perhaps what typical RBG, Z Inten, Brush size, ect you are using?
Also, are you using a tablet? I find that mine tends to give too much variance for this hair methodā¦
Thanks for any more details you could provide
Hello MacGyver007, yes, I can see about making a Zscript tomorrow or the coming days maybe, it is getting kind of late for me here now as I am typing this. Also I am using a tablet but not for painting the hair since it feels easier to me painting it with the mouse, so that might also be an aspect. Usually I have Zadd/sub off, for RGB I use an intensity between about 1 and 10, I only paint with higher intensity when I have to cover something up with higher opacity. The brush size depends on how long the hair needs to be, partly I paint with rather big brushes to paint nice long and flowing hair. I usually lower the density and up the grooming a bit from the default settings.
Matt
How did you get that texture - looks great - i have not tried the fiber effects yet
Hi pmdesign thanks alot!
MacGyver007, I recorded a ZScript earlier today but when you run it it doesnāt change the āSecondary Colorā only the primary one. If you would like me to upload this script I can but you will not see much since it paints everything nearly black. If anyone could tell me how to correct for this I will be happy to rerecord the steps and upload the ZScript.
Additionally after the ZScipt didnāt seem to work I went and made this:
It shows what settings and intensities I usually begin with.

Wow, Iām in awe of the simply furry sphere⦠thatās might impressive.
I actually would like to see a zscript if you get that black problem fixed, that sphere looks fantastic.
3 questions:
How do you paint hair or soften the edge in photoshop, which has no fiber brush? I think that edge work really improves the sphere and canāt figure out how to do it in photoshop aloneā¦
Also, do you have many reference pics of fur or is that from memory? The shading and mix in that simple sphere alone look fantastic!
Finally, how do you paint details on a face or so, after it has been dropped to the canvas? I have been having much difficulty giving the smaller and finer points detail, since you canāt blow it up larger anymore once its droppedā¦
Thanks for all the help youāve given, Iām finally re-looking at some old animal models that I never knew how to correctly add fur to.
Hello there again MacGyver007, not a problem.
I am using a German version of PhotoShop, I canāt tell you exactly what the tool is called in English but if you look on the main set of tools you will see something that looks like a water droplet; I would guess the name is something like āSoftenā. As for the brush it is a standard one that is slightly curved.
It really depends on the subject, most cats (big or small) and dogs and other more common animals I can do pretty much from memory. For the more exotic animals I will look up their markings and features in one of the books I have around or on the Internet.
For the detail I usually push the document size to the max in ZBrush so things are actually really huge, if I still need to get closer I can always zoom in. I almost always drop the image the canvas before I begin painting any color.
Matt
Ok, promise not to laugh, but Iād like for you to see what Iām having problems withā¦
Again, I am having real trouble in the fur department
There is no reason to laugh, MacGyver, I think he looks great! small_orange_diamond
I really like the way you highlighted his muscles especially on this face and shoulder region. Could you maybe also post a larger shot? What you could do would be to maybe grab some regions of the fur that you painted to cover up his contours (Iād say on the tail and his left limbs), and move it a bit closer to the body. Did you paint it in PhotoShop, if so did you paint the fur on a separate layer? You can use the lasso tool to select the area that you want to modify, then grab and move that fur closer to the body. I wouldnāt add to much fur on his pads, the hair there usually very short and close to the body. I really like how you added fur to his face and jaw! The eyes look cool, but I would maybe still change them to make the pupil rounder, the slit pupils in mammals are exclusive to small cats to block out overly bright sunlight. I would maybe also paint the eyes in a bit in PS, maybe add some slight shadowing over them and add the soft, often darker skin that they are embedded in. Anyhow, those are just personal suggestions, Iām really looking forward to see how it will develop, it would be great if you could post more.
Pilou, hey thanks alot for the link! The piece looks very neat, great effect! small_orange_diamond:D

Here is a second go at itā¦

The eyes, nose were pretty much painted very hastily as I was focusing on fur and not the overall compositionā¦
I think I am having trouble with not only getting colors and patches to flow together, but with getting the fur to appear to have mass.
First off, I am winging it for colors of fur⦠Do you have any system for that sort of thing? Like undercoat one color, ect?
Other than using strokes in the direction of hair growth, do you have any system for painting in the body of an animal? To me, my fur seems very randomly spaced and shaded, i know it should be a lot betterā¦
Also, all my models come out looking the same as the real model, but with a fur ātextureā on it.
With yours, the fur seems to have mass, and you can make out different depths⦠mine seem to come out very āflatā, and sticking to the model.
Also, do you have any idea how to get āshaggyā hair, such as this little guy?:
[](javascript:zb_insimg(ā2392ā,āDSC02690.jpgā,1,0))
Thanks for your help, i think I am definatly improving from where I was a week or so ago, but obviously from my pictures there is a lot about modeling and fur that I still just donāt get⦠thanks for helping though!
Hello there MacGyver, sorry that it took me a while to post back to you. Those are two sweet looking dogs!
I try putting into the hair several different layers of shades to help it gain more mass and to add to the reflection and shading of the hair. I first usually paint hair also in the base color and then add different shading, lighter and darker, on top of it.
For painting the body you could try to play a bit with the settings for the Grooming and the Density. I usually keep the density for most parts a bit lower though to not cover up all the already painted layers of hair when painting over it again.
Both to add more mass to the hair and to get different kinds of shaggy looks for the little guy you posted I would take a big brush with lower density or also the DragRect to make areas look more āfluffyā and not so very well groomed.
