That’s a great idea
Lowering the time bar makes you think differently, and by getting rid of the “preciousness” of your sculpt, your style gets more room to develop.
Looking good!
A continuation of my speed sculpt busts. first up a baby troll! requested by mum lol. spent about 30-40 minutes on this one.
Secondly a Creature that I had in a dream a few weeks ago. some sort of changeling, they started out as humans sitting in a cafe’ wearing hooded robes, then as I got closer they started converging on me and morphing into these freaks. each tooth moves independently around the mouth and the skin begun flaking off like broken pottery. they also make wailing baby sounds. not super keen on the way it turned out but ohwell. onto the next one! spent nearly 2 hours on this one… still plenty of room for improvement
Another speed sculpt for today, 40 Minutes, a childish cartoony face.
“Decided today to do more speed sculpts rather than spending such a long time on a single project here is the begging of my new adventure!
1hour15 minutes for the elf girl, 1 hours for the tough guy! both started from dyna spheres”
Like what you are doing… do you have a video of the process on any of these?
@Nate Owens, Cheers Nate. I havn’t recorded any sessions so to speak, but I do try and save undo history where I can. I could probably record some of the undo history and hope it’s the whole sculpt. dealt with a few crashes today.
good work
@macrosspillot, Thank you
My speed sculpt for this morning 1hour 15minutes inc. polypaint and BPR… Had nooo idea what I was gonna make, so I just started sculpting and making shapes till this guy emerged. some sort of amphibious alien fish man with a beak! enjoy lol
Really wanted to try my hand at sculpting with real clay… for the first time ever! well besides when I was a kid. so I found an awesome block of firewood and knew straight away I wanted to have some creature posing like it’s stalking something over the edge. armature made all tools set and ready!
heres the Creature peeping over the top, it’s not any creature from Earth, I’m just letting it design itself as I sculpt. each time I pick up a piece of clay or a tool it gets put to use, it’s really quite liberating. just letting loose with creativity seeing what my mind can come up with in this new situation.
I know the anatomy’s not perfect or right, I’m still trying to block in the shapes and figuring out how the clay responds and how it feels and moves under my hand.
It really feels like you can get a lot more character into a sculpt by using clay, I don’t know how to describe it really, but it’s like it feels more “alive” possibly because you can touch and move it physically, might be the same when you get something 3D printed and it feels like it’s come to life.? not sure, 3D printing will have to be my next adventure
hope you enjoy my WIP so far. any crits and comments are welcome. though I’m not sure how changeable certain established elements are, when using clay.?
Not entirely a Zbrush adventure now is it! D: ohwell, the forums won’t let me change the name of the thread so it stays! I’m calling this experiment done! I’ll try to get my hands on some oil based clays and some easier to bend armature wire. the stuff I was using was waaaaay to thick and awkward to shape, as a result I was a bit lazy with setting up the armature and made the hind legs a bit too short and the spine too long. I was also told that the armature might break the sculpt due to it being water based and having an extreme shrinking range. so we’ll see how it turns out when it’s dry, which is why I decided to end it here, don’t want to spend all my time and effort on something that’ll break. well it’s a place to start!
Hey, that is really good! Always refreshing to see some traditional stuff on here!
@Santis, Thanks man. was fun to try out some traditional sculpting, Wanted to get to the roots of what it is we do digitally.
Here’s todays speedy sculpty, starting to use the alphabet to give myself some more direction and ideas. using an alliteration for producing concepts and ideas.
starting with A we have an Arrogant Albino Alien! only the timer ran out 1hour15minutes before I got to make him really albino. just a generic alien face for starters! next time for BBB
Quite excellent!
Thank you Eric glad you like him!
Nearly 2 hours spent on this female face… suppose to be loosely based on the actress Hayden Panettiere but not an exact likeness. theres a few things that are bothering me but I can’t put my finger on it just yet, so if anyone is able to point me in the right direction I’ll be very happy
Here is an update!
slowly plodding away! haha Cute girls and likeness! two of the hardest things to sculpt! and I’m trying them both at once! it’s doing my head in.
any and all crits are welcome

Speed sculpt B for Bunyip! (my spin on An Australian ‘Aboriginal’ folk lore monster a sort of wolf/seal/horse beast that lives in lakes and lagoons. is a bit messy, almost called it quits half way through, but persevered, I think it’s pretty clear I need a lot of practice in sculpting hair and fur did it in a few sittings, but probably a total time of around 1.5hours or so. all sculpted out of symmetry for a bit of extra challenge!
C is for Carbuncle! from Latin American folklore “A small Creature with a jewel on it’s head” or maybe the more well known (to modern culture) Carbuncle from the Final Fantasy Series! here is my spin on the cute little cretin! I plan on creating the abdominal portion of it at a later date, right now is just a Bust version as a speed sculpt 1 hour 15 minutes for sculpting another 15 for paint and fibremesh.
A time lapse of the Alien, as you can see I was experimenting with my workflow a little bit, by using less subdivisions and just adding edge loops for around the eyes/mouth/ears/etc. however it had more annoying effects than useful but it was interesting. enjoy.

Started from a Zsphere this time. trying out similar tactics that I did with the alien. creating edgloops as I sculpt for certain areas.

rough speedsculpt for day D a Dorky Dragon! 1.5 hours inc. Polypaint and glasses ;D
Started making an Elf… kept on getting frustrated because it looked stooopid! so I decided to turn it into a face-plane study. still has elf ears and upturned weird eyes because I’ll continue making it an elf soon
One suggestion would be to not rely on just front or side view reference. You need a 3/4 view too. Eyes, nose, and mouth may line up in the front and side views but the cheeks and bone structure don’t have distinct features, and that’s where things can drift away from a likeness very quickly. A 3/4 view will tell you how the corners of the mouth pinch into the cheeks, how the depth of the eyes really work, and will allow you to see the silhouette of the cheek bones and jawline. People don’t use 3/4 views because they’re hard to set up but I guarantee you it’ll improve your modeling 10 fold immediately. If you can find an overhead or underneath reference, that’s also hugely valuable. To see the half-circle of the mouth and eyes is enlightening if you haven’t noticed it before. You may need to set up your 3/4 view in Maya or Max or your 3d package of choice since ZBrush doesn’t make it easy.
The cheeks of your girls are much too exaggerated, and using a 3/4 will fix that right away. It will also help you get the depth of the mouth figured out more easily. Mouths aren’t simply exterior lips, but a twisting tubular shape that wrap into the mouth. As such, you find a rounded slightly fatty transition at the corners of the mouth, whereas yours appear to be basically superficial, like a cut out of a hard surface.
I’d recommend the book Stop Staring. It’s a great book that is equal parts anatomy lesson and a best practices study in how best to implement it all in CG. I learned a lot of tips from it when I was just getting started.
