Ryan's ZBrush Sketchbook (Maddam's Standard brush - added page 6)

Really like the expression on his face and the fact that the render looks like a real image of something made with clay that is still not finished where the sculptor is still refining the final form. :+1:

Maybe the film (same name) coming out will interest you also. I think the debut is today at Cannes. Coming out the 19 th of September I think. Fernando Meireles, the brazilian who did ā€œCentral Stationā€ is the director.
Saramago is a nobel prize winner and a great thinker, nice to see something criative like this came out of it. :+1: Unfortunatly on the directors blog, he states he had to cut it over 10 times because of american studio pressure…let’s hope it holds up.

Hey Giantsun. Looking forward to the movie. The book is great.

Here is a character sheet of the sculpt.

very nice, i love the expression, even the tooled base and torso have expression in the application of the digicaly, very well done.

Nice!
I like the classical looking of it (the raque strokes).

How did you manage to do this close up move during your turnaround?

Thanks for comments guys.

Hey Seb, Marcus wrote a script called turntable plus that does this. Its pretty useful. Should be right in the utitlities forum.

Hey Ryan,

I’m so grateful to have found your Sculpting a Female Bust tutorial over at gnomology.com.

You’re not only a great artist, you’re also great teacher. I got the impression right away that I was viewing a tutorial that was first and formost created for artists by an artist. This artists greatly appreciates your work :).

The bits of knowledge you drop here and there are fanstastic.

Watching your tutorials and using some of your techniques has already greatly boosted my confidence with ZBrush.

I’d like to know the technique you use for importing and rendering you sculptures in Maya. Is there a tutorial on this or another site that explains the method you use?

Thanks!

great work…love the expression !

Rodin - Thanks for the compliment! That made my day.

I have plans on a simple workflow tutorial going between maya and zbrush at some point but haven’t done one just yet.

Skull_monster - Thanks! :+1:

where the updates ryan! we want more masterpieces!

Yeah, where are they? *(Picks up lit torch and heads to the castle)

Well! No torches please. i prefer poison. by someone you love. Much better than fire.

I have actually been in Europe the last few weeks. I started out teaching at Truemax in Copenhagen then went down to Prague to see my old ex-pat stomping grounds.

Since I have been here I have been studying and documenting the sculptures of Prague. I have over a hundred sculptures documented so far and over 1,500 photographs! 1,500? Oh that was yesterday. Now it should be like 2,000 and I have two more days.

I should be releasing them in the near future. Stay tuned to this thread for more info.

My goal was to capture accurate reference for sculptors. Something that Google simple can’t supply enough of. Want to learn how they sculpted cloth 100 years ago. Let’s take a walk down the Charles Bridge and see how it was done! So far, I have 20 of 30 sculptures documented on that bridge!

For now, I have posted six images at Flickr.

Here is one from Vysehrad:

man… it looks great!!

Alex Oliver

Your enthusiasm radiates from my monitor.
I’ve been musing along the same lines…it’s rather easy to get the anatomical reference from the book the Academists used (Paul Richer, edited in the US by the late great Robert Beverly Hale for Watson and Guptill) or to find information on casting in bronze (if you speak or read French) but it’s very difficult to find something on folds other than there are seven types of folds ( cilindrical, zigzag, spiraling, half-closed, hanging, falling and inert ).
The best reference comes indeed from the superb (usually) marble sculptures from the Masters.

You are really doing a superb job!

Hello! I have uploaded the female bust head for people to purchase directly with the tutorial. Click the image to be taken to the page.

It includes the head, the design sculpt for the hair, the retopologized hair and a few individual strands of hair.
